To Our Residents: What are Peer Mentors? We are live-in student staff members who have been trained

to help you thrive in your first year of college. The transition to university can be tough -

been there, done that! We’re ready to help you succeed academically.

What can we help you with? Our goal is to make your change to UMass an easier

one. If you are concerned about something - please talk to us. Whether you have questions

about class assignments, SPIRE, essays, resumes, campus resources, or simply just be-

cause you need someone to talk to. We are here for you!

Where can I find a Peer Mentor to talk to? Visit us in the RASC or in Wheeler

during mobile RASC hours (more information on the next page). We are more than happy

to get to know you outside RASC hours too, so don’t hesitate to say hi or come talk to us

anytime!

The Add/Drop Period is a stretch of time (up to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, 21st September) that provides

students with the flexibility to explore different class options. If you need to withdraw from/enroll in a

class during this time, you can definitely do so on SPIRE! Remember: you need at least 12 credits to be

considered a full-time student here at UMass!

RASC: Residential Academic Success Center

What is RASC? The Residential Academic Success Center (RASC) is unique to your cluster. Our

cluster’s RASC is located in Gorman 101. We have access to a variety of useful resources that will help

you adjust to university life. The RASC is open from 4 to 11 PM, Sundays through Thursdays.

Who is in the RASC? Your Peer Mentors will be available during RASC hours. We are happy to an-

swer any questions you might have. How to navigate SPIRE? Unsure about campus resources? Want

some tips on time management and test-taking ? Need help with your essays or resume? Don’t hesitate

to stop by the RASC and talk to your friendly neighborhood Peer Mentors!

Sometimes I don’t want to walk all the way to Gorman: Don’t worry! We have Peer Mentors doing

mobile RASC hours in Wheeler every week from Tuesday to Thursday. Mobile RASC hour signs will

be up, but you can also simply find out by asking your Peer Mentors!

On-Campus Advising: If you have any questions about your major/exploratory track, visit your Departmental Advising office.

You can find the locations of the advising offices on the Departments’ official websites.

ExSEL and Learning Resource Center:

Visit the LRC on the 10th floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library to study in a peer-driven environment!

Take advantage of their newest program, ExSEL (Excellence through Student Enhanced Learning),

where students are divided into small groups, and meet weekly to work on problem sets developed by

their course instructor. Find more information on the LRC website (www.umass.edu/lrc/exsel.html).

Writing Center:

If you need help with essays or writing in general, come visit the Writing Center in the northwest corner

of W.E.B. Du Bois Library Learning Commons (located in the basement). Furthermore, they also offer

online tutoring!
