HEAD COACHKEITH OTTERBEIN

The chance to coach your alma mater is something Keith Otterbein has never taken for granted. He’s fond of saying “I have the best job in college football.” And given the quality of student-athletes he recruits and works with, and the success the Chargers have had on the field, it’s no wonder he feels this way.

That feeling is as present as ever as he enters his 18th season leading the Chargers.

He’s led Hillsdale to four conference championships and three appearances in the NCAA Di-vision II playoffs (2009, 2010, 2018). He’s coached nine All-Americans, with those players playing at seven different positions. Two of those All-Americans - Jared Veld-heer and Andre Holmes - are still active NFL players, Veldheer playing for the Den-ver Broncos and Holmes with the Buffalo Bills.

Hillsdale’s all-time leader in passing yards (Troy Weatherhead), rushing yards (Joe Glendening) and re-ceiving yards (Trey Brock) have all enjoyed their careers under Otterbein’s guidance.

As a player, Otterbeion starred at Hillsdale from 1975-78 at linebacker, earning NAIA honorable mention All-American honors while also being recognized as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. He was also the program’s first-ever three-time winner of the Ralph Miller III Award as the team’s best linebacker.

Otterbein was the youngest head coach in the NCAA when he was hired to lead the Ferris State University program in 1986. He turned the Bulldogs into a pow-erhouse, winning 30 of the final 36 games he coached there, a run that included three Division II playoff appearances.

Just before his appointment to Hillsdale, Otterbein was the running backs coach and recruiting coordina-tor at Ball State University from 1995-2001.
