Solar accredited capacity overtakes small hydro under REC scheme

Solar PV capacity accredited under the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) scheme reached 262 MW,

surpassing small hydro, this October. A total of 27 hydro power projects with combined generation capacity

of 243 MW have so far been accredited.

In October alone, 49 renewable projects are accredited, adding a capacity of more than 100 MW. The

sudden increase in accreditation marks a stark contrast to the slow rate of accreditation witnessed in the last

two quarters. Out of the total approved projects, 35 are solar PV projects with a capacity of 64 MW.

Half of the total solar PV accredited capacity is from Rajasthan with 47 projects. Madhya Pradesh ranks

second with 42 accredited solar projects with total capacity of capacity of 62 MW. While, Himachal

Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are the leading states with an accredited hydro power capacity of 48 MW

and 43 MW respectively. Maharashtra has the largest number of approved projects (nine) with a combined

capacity of 35 MW.

High power tariff slows industrial output in Maharashtra

High power tariff in Maharashtra has been affecting the industrial output. Power consumption by

industrial sector dropped 1.9% between April 2013 and August 2013 compared to corresponding period

in 2012.

Nashik zone, having large number of industries, registered the sharpest decline of 7.3%. Nagpur urban

zone ranked second with a drop of 7%, followed by the highest power consumption zone, Kalian zone

with a reduction of 4.2%. However, Baramati and Kolhapur zones showed positive trend in industrial

consumption.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (MSEDCL) has proposed another tariff hike

inspite of already having the highest tariff in the country. Industries Minister, Narayan Rane and Forest

Minister, Patangrao Kadam demanded that MSEDCL should not be permitted to introduce another power

hike as it would adversely impact state’s industrial sector. Also, industrialists together with other

consumers are holding agitations against proposed power hike.
