SUNDAY 14TH JULY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS This week, Charlotte’s Young Classical Star is the German-Russian pianist Olga Scheps. Having won several prestigious competitions by the age of 12, Scheps made her orchestral debut at just 14 years old and now regularly performs with world-class orchestras. Scheps loves to cross borders with her repertoire and often arranges piano versions of famous dance music – but this afternoon, Charlotte showcases her more traditional side with a Chopin favourite from her latest album, Melody. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR Friday marked the release of Ron Howard’s new film celebrating the life and career of Luciano Pavarotti and tonight, David plays some of the great Italian tenor’s finest recordings. Expect favourites from Puccini such as ‘Nessun Dorma’ and the love duet from Madam Butterfly, as well as a selection of Neapolitan songs. Alongside the golden voice of Pavarotti, David also includes orchestral music by some of the great operatic composers, including the ‘Grand March’ from Verdi’s Aida. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT Tonight, in the second instalment of her musical exploration of the four elements, Catherine Bott plays with fire. MONDAY 15TH JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: A FRENCH CELEBRATION This weekend saw the 230th anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille – so tonight, Jane Jones celebrates a wealth of French composers, musicians, orchestras and conductors. We begin with the hazy (and unmistakably French) melodies of Debussy’s Prelude a l’après midi d’un faune – conducted, appropriately enough, by the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez. The centrepiece of the evening is Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No.1 played by Stephen Hough, from a release that was named the “greatest classical music recording of the last 30 years” by readers of Gramophone magazine in 2008. Later in the programme, we’ll hear Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin before ending the evening with ‘La Marseillaise’, the national anthem of France, sung by Placido Domingo. TUESDAY 16TH JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: HERBERT VON KARAJAN – THE MAN, THE MAESTRO Tonight, Jane Jones marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Herbert von Karajan. Considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Karajan held the position of Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 35 years and is one of the most recorded artists of all time. We begin tonight’s concert with Karajan’s partnership with the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Karajan helped to launch Mutter’s career and she recorded Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.3 with him when she was just 14-years-old. Another Karajan collaboration also features: Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ recorded with Leontyne Price. A celebration of Karajan would not be complete without one of his four recordings of Beethoven’s complete symphonies. Tonight, we round off the evening with the composer’s final symphony: the mighty ‘Choral’. William Boyce’s Symphony No.1 and Paul Mealor’s Ubi Caritas were played at the weddings of Princes William and Harry respectively and tonight, these works open our concert. Vaughan Williams, meanwhile, turned down the position of Master of the King’s Music in the 1930s; we hear his Norfolk Rhapsody No.1 and music by one of his biggest inspirations: Sibelius. Further highlights include music inspired by on-screen royalty, with a Beethoven symphony put to powerful use in The King’s Speech, and James Horner’s score for Braveheart. THURSDAY 18TH JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: MUSICAL CRUSHES Catherine Bott begins this evening’s Full Works Concert with Schubert’s Symphony No.5, his most ‘classical’ symphony, written at a time when Schubert was obsessed with Mozart and his music. In the year of its composition, Schubert wrote in his diary: “O Mozart! Immortal Mozart! What countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!” The work contains similar themes to the final movement of Mozart’s Violin Sonata in F, which we also hear tonight, performed by Mark Steinberg and Mitsuko Uchida. This sonata was dedicated to a lovestruck student of Mozart’s, who he described as a “a monster, but plays delightfully”.

Further highlights include music by Beethoven, who fell in love with his pupil Terese Malfatt; the score for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet; and a recording from the great musical marriage of Daniel Barenboim and Jacqueline du Pre. Franz Schubert Symphony No.5 in B-flat major D.485 Charles Mackerras conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Violin Sonata in F major K.377 Violin: Mark Steinberg Piano: Mitsuko Uchida Ludwig van Beethoven Coriolan Overture Opus 62 Claudio Abbado conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Edward Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor Opus 85 Cello: Jacqueline du Pre Daniel Barenboim conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra Craig Armstrong Romeo & Juliet – Balcony Scene Paul Bateman leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from the piano Antonin Dvorak Slavonic Rhapsody No.2 in G minor Opus 45 Jakub Hrusa conducts the Prague Philharmonia
