Papers• Cross out the title of your paper, contractions, 1st person, indirect intro paragraphs• Do you think I know about the Pueblos and the Pueblo Revolt?• The “summary syndrome”• Deeper meanings and comparisons, these are pretty generic• Tense• No “we…”, instead of “I”, no first person• Never use “the readings”• Intro/Conclusion Paragraphs: not flowery, direct and related to the essay only, 5 paragraph structure• Structure:

• The Pueblo Revolt compares well with Syrian revolution because of its timing, the number of people on each side, and the role that an understanding of history played for both sides.

The timing of the Pueblo revolt…. The disparate numbers of people revolting compared to the number of people in power… Finally both the Syrian people and the Pueblos understood the important of history in their revolts. The Pueblo, for example, were very careful to destroy all vestiges of Catholicism, including not only artifacts, but also their marriages and surnames…

The comparison between the Syrians and the Pueblos shows us that numbers and military technology, timing, and fighting for control of memory have remained important elements of religion despite the 300 year difference between these events.

Sistema de Castas

• How did the Spanish racial caste system work?• When did your family “arrive” in the US?• Does the caste system still operate today?• Do people in the area claim indigenous ancestry, is it frowned upon,

do people claim Mexican-ness, is that frowned upon?

Pueblo Revolt: Groups• Define a rebellion or revolt/what stood out in your papers?• What took the Pueblos so long to revolt?

• They needed the Spanish for protection• Spanish had superior weaponry and biological advantage• The “Pueblos” are not a people, it was a loosely organized band of traders

• Why did the Spanish stay in New Mexico, such impoverished environment?• It did not take too many resources• Conversion was taking place, ethically, they could not leave their converts• Nationalism and European competition, it was a desert, but it was their desert

• Why did the Pueblo get rid of all Catholic imagery and tradition?• They understood the power of memory and history• This is a common theme

Pueblo Revolt: The Point

• The lack of revolt was rational• The victors determine the “rebels”• The source: Testimony about Pope, a return to a time before the

Spanish, emphasis on destroying Christian imagery, divorcing from Christian marriages, and changing baptismal names• Awareness of the power of history• Moving this tale to the beginning of “American” history serves as an

easy way to leave out Spanish America until much later
