1. The Common Era or CE is the period of measured time beginning with
the year 1 (the traditional birth date of Jesus Christ) to the present. BCE
or Before Common Era is connected to dates before 1 CE.
2. Jesus was born in a village called Bethlehem. It was in a country called
Palestine on the Mediterranean coast. He was born on 25th December,
about 2000 years ago.
3. Jesus grew up in a place called Nazareth, near the lake of Galilee in
North Palestine.
4. Mother Mary brought Jesus up to be a good Jew and taught him the
Jewish scriptures.
5. As Jesus grew up, he became very thoughtful. He could see that people
were not happy. He noticed a great difference between the rich and the
poor. He saw that many rich Jews did not follow what was written in the
scriptures.
6. Jesus taught people to lead a good and useful life. This would help them
to overcome their miseries and be happy. He wanted people to love God,
to look after their parents and to be kind to everyone. He wanted them to
look after the sick and poor, to obey the laws and not to be selfish. He
asked men not to seek high positions and to be humble.
7. Jesus is called the Saviour because he taught people how to lead a good
and useful life. This would help them to overcome their miseries and be
happy.
8. The Jews did not like Jesus because he criticized the Jewish priests for
following the scriptures too literally. The Jews had many rules, and
sometimes these rules were cruel. When Jesus talked to them about this
they became very angry and ordered him to stop his preaching.
9. A number of people, most of them very poor, listened to what he said
and believed in him. They became his disciples.
10. The Jews had a great feast each year in Jerusalem called the Passover.
People from every part of the country came to celebrate the Passover.
11. Jesus did not write any of his teachings. The writings of his four
disciples were later known as the Gospels.
Jesus often told people simple and interesting stories to illustrate his
teachings. These stories are known as Parables.
The Bible is the most holy and sacred book of the Christians.
12. Roman Governor Pontius Pilate thought that it was really not fair to
crucify Jesus. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the
Jews to make it clear that he did not want to be associated with Jesus’
punishment.
