Celebrating IB results

This week I attended the IB Awards Night at Deakin Edge in Federation Square with some of our 2019 IB graduates. Mr Peter Francis, Acting Director of Studies and Ms Eirwen Stevenson, Acting IB Coordinator also enjoyed sharing in this celebratory event with the girls and their parents.

Foundation Day

On 15 February, PLC will be 145 years old! It was on this day, in 1875, the Ladies’ College as it was then known, held its first classes with just 60 students, in East Melbourne. Our history books tell us that there were no uniforms and girls wore what was fashionable at the time, very long, high neck dresses with bustles.

On Monday this week we celebrated the founding of PLC with our Foundation Day Assembly. A piece of the original foundation stone from the first college building was used to reflect the strong founding principles of our College that have endured over the decades. Students of every generation at PLC have experienced, and continue to experience a quality education within a strong Christian framework of service to others.

Our speaker on Monday was Ms Kim Lowe, from the Class of 1978 and she spoke to the girls about the ways that she has used her education to improve our world. Kim does inspiring work as the Co-Founder of Partnerships For Protection, a conservation organisation which supports the conservation of critically endangered wildlife and their rainforest home in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Her message to the girls was to make the most of their education, to build strong knowledge, and make the most of the broad range of experiences that the College offers, to then be able to go out into the world and actively contribute as a strong, principled and capable woman. Our sincere thanks is extended to Kim for her thought provoking message.

Start of the year

As we move into next week, most students are back at school, after self-quarantining due to Coronavirus requirements. I would like to express my thanks to families who have had to make arrangements for the care of students at home and to our amazing staff, who right across the College, have made many adjustments to the normal start of the year.

We are right into planning our next major school event, the Twilight Picnic, coming up on Friday 28 February and starting at 5.00pm. Please mark the date in your diary for the family to attend as it is a wonderful school community event for the students, parents and extended family members to enjoy together. I look forward to sharing the evening with you.

From the Director of Christian MinistriesApproaching our learning with a sense of ‘Awe and wonder’.

Recently I’ve been reflecting on the connection between Jesus and education. The series ‘Jesus the Game Changer’ has a great episode on ‘Jesus and Education and Health Care’. If you are interested in exploring the Christian foundations of universities and our hospital system I recommend it.

It has been nice to see the girls so full of creative energy as they go about putting together their creative masterpieces for House Concerts. It takes a lot of effort, sacrifice and hard work, yet hopefully the reward of the performance and the friendships along the way help to make it all worthwhile. Congratulations to all the girls, and the House Captains who do such an amazing job as well as Mrs Archman and Mrs Thomson who have been lovingly guiding the process along the way.

Although going to school can be tiring, the ability to engage in education and explore and navigate amazing things is a wonderful privilege. Working to the structure of a bell can seem hard at times as the tummy rumbles and you realise there is still another lesson to go to before lunchtime.

The basis of universal education for all people has strong foundations in the Christian Faith. After the resurrection Jesus addresses his disciples and tells them:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19 & 20.

This is known as ‘The Great Commission’. Of interest to note is that there is a teaching element to understanding God and it is for all people.

By God’s grace we can come into the knowledge of God. That is not to say we can know everything as God is Infinite and we are finite human-beings. By his mercy God has entered into humanity in Jesus and shown us what he is like, he has made a way possible for us to get to know Him.

The book of John starts with:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.” God is Word and has revealed Himself through His word. John 1:1–5

There is a logic and reasonable approach to faith that can still leave room for the mysterious. It was thought that with an open mind and a humble heart as one learnt more about the world and learnt more about God through His word the Bible, one would come into a deeper understanding and relationship with God. The establishment of the early universities encouraged this understanding.

Above the great oak door of the Cavendish laboratory door in Cambridge are the words of Psalm 11:2 which states: “Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them.” The thought being the more you study the wonders of Creation, the more it should lead you to a sense and understanding of the wonders of the Creator.

Yale, established in 1636 stated in its rules and precepts: “Let every Student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the maine end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life” (original spelling).

Invitation to Connect CampFriday 20– Sunday 22 March

RSVP by Tuesday 12 March

Welcome to all those returning and to all those who have newly joined our PLC Family. Can I highly encourage you to come along to our PLC Connect Family Camp?

The Camp is being held on the last weekend before the end of Term, Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March.

It promises to be a lovely time of delving deeper into God’s word as we learn about the Reason for hope and explore what this is and look at some practical ways we can share this with our families and friends.

We are very excited to have John Carrick leading us in talks on the reason we can have hope. John is a minister at St Thomas Anglican church Burwood. John is married to Susan and has two children; Mia (14) and Noah (12). They have two Burmese cats Reggie and Stephanie; and four chickens! The family’s happy place is Point Lonsdale where they holiday several times a year. They like to play monopoly and John often lets Susan, Mia or Noah win! John is looking forward to sharing ‘A Reason for Hope’ with us and potentially playing monopoly or a game of chess.

This is a fantastic opportunity to draw closer to God and to get to know more people in the PLC Family, whilst enjoying all the comforts and activities at the Adventure resort at Phillip Island. This includes surf lessons on the Saturday afternoon for anyone interested.

RSVP is by Tuesday 12 March - Booking via https://www.trybooking.com/BIEWS

For any questions or queries please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you there.

Warm regards

Nick Curtis

As the Bible teaches that all people are created in the image of God , Genesis 1:27, then all people are deserving of education. As people have shared the Good News around the world rising literacy rates have also followed. To understand about God’s great love is to also engage in reading about it as well as praying and living.

This understanding has directly impacted communities and societies – from raising people out of poverty, to fighting for human rights (and animal rights), to being good stewards of the environment, to establishing schools such as PLC Melbourne, where girls also deserved an education and the opportunity to know of God’s great love.

If you are keen to learn more about God and the impact that he can have in our lives, I again extend the invitation to come along to our ‘Connect Family Camp this term. Details are in this Newsletter and bookings are through ‘Try booking’. https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=600878&

The Camp on Friday 20–22 March, which is at the Adventure Resort will be a fun time of learning and getting to know other fmilies in the PLC community. You are warmly encouraged to come along.

May you know and continue to grow in your sense of awe and wonder both of God and this beautiful world that we live in.

Blessings

Nick Curtis

Senior School Sport

Term 1 GSV Sport

GSV Sport is in full swing with round three matches having been played this week. It has been a busy week for girls as they juggle house concert and sporting commitments. The girls who were able to manage this are thanked and congratulated for their efforts. Results from the Round 3 matches are listed below.

Term 2 GSV Sport

Sign up for Term 2 GSV sport is now available on the WYSE Term 2 sport page https://wyse.plc.vic.edu.au/homepage/5711. All girls who would like to take part in the sports of Netball, Hockey, Australian Football, Senior Basketball, Senior Water Polo and Cross Country MUST sign up via the links on these pages. This is important as many administrative and risk management procedures rely on girls being in the Wyse system BEFORE participation. Training for all sports starts in the last week of Term 1 and sign-ups will close on Friday 13 March. Girls who do not sign up before the due date may not be able to join in if teams are full.

Unnamed Clothing

Every week there are many UNNAMED items of both school and sports uniform left in the Sport Department. It is impossible for us to return these to their owners if we do not know who they belong to. Could all students and parents PLEASE make sure all items of clothing are clearly named.

GSV Senior Sport

A welcome return to GSV Sport this week saw many committed and talented sports women take the field to represent PLC despite the fast pace of house concerts. The girls are to be congratulated for their ability to manage their time to encompass both of these very worthwhile activities!

On Monday the Senior A Tennis team, captained by Erin Atalla, travelled to Mentone for a convincing win and the Senior Softball Team, captained by Joanna Hare, were narrowly defeated by a strong St Margaret’s team in a very competitive and close encounter. The Senior B Tennis Team played a strong contingent from Our Lady of Mercy College but were beaten in some close matches. Overall a successful afternoon of sport with great match play and sportsmanship.

Events

Friends of the Music School (FMS)

The FMS is a parent support group for the PLC Music Department and is open to parents from both Junior and Senior School. The FMS supports the Music Department in a number of ways including fundraising to supply bursaries for students, providing refreshments at music events, and assisting financially with the purchase of specific equipment.

New parents are always welcome to join the FMS and it is a great way to meet other parents from across the school community. There is no minimum commitment of time required and parents volunteer to assist in whatever capacity suits them.

If you are interested in joining the FMS or would like further information please contact Kerith Cummins or Fiona Cross in the Music Office by emailing music @plc.vic.edu.au

Term 1

We have two exciting events for parents and students to attend this term. The Feast of Music is an opportunity to hear members of the Music Staff in concert, while the Melba Music Concert showcases the commitment and passion for music of our Old Collegians.

Feast of Music

The FMS is holding a fundraising concert, ‘The Feast of Music’ on Friday 13 March in the PAC Auditorium. Commencing at 6.00pm, the concert will feature music items performed by the PLC Music Staff and will be followed by canapes and drinks in the foyer, accompanied by some light background music.

Tickets are $35 per person and are available through trybooking.com/BIBOG

This promises to be a wonderful night of entertainment and staff are busily preparing their items so please book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Melba Music Concert

The Melba Music Concert is a new initiative that is being put on by the Old Collegians. Scheduled for Saturday 21 March at 3.00pm in the PAC Auditorium, this concert will showcase the musical talent of over 40 past PLC students in a range of classical to contemporary music.

Tickets are available from trybooking.com/BHYSO and proceeds go to Dame Nellie Melba Scholarships.

Junior School

What an amazing variety of learning environments I have experienced this week! Apart from the fantastic program our staff provide in the classrooms, I also had the pleasure of watching our girls flourish as they visited our new Exploratorium and the YMCA campsite at the Queenscliff beach.

With the Year 4 Camp being held so early in the year it provided a great opportunity for our girls to strengthen established friendships and also develop new ones. The parents, who appeared to look so nervous as our buses departed from school, would have been truly amazed at how mature and independent their daughters were on camp. Every year I see our girls rise to the challenge and quickly learn how to take care of themselves and their belongings in the outdoor environment. I think their experience of camping at Queenscliff certainly gave them a much greater appreciation of what Mum and Dad provide for them at home!

It was fantastic to see our girls so excited and absorbed in their science activities under the guidance of Miss Defina in the Exploratorium this week. The lessons provided opportunities for collaboration and teamwork as Miss Defina encouraged her students to share ideas and develop solutions together. Our scientists were encouraged to approach tasks using their creativity, problem-solving skills and critical thinking.

Today the Year 6 girls enjoyed their Investiture Assembly with their parents, teachers and all of the girls in the Junior School. Each Year 6 student pledged to live out the values of the College and to serve the school as a senior student leader this year. They proudly received a leadership badge, presented to them by our Principal, Mrs Cheryl Penberthy.

A reminder to all families that they must register online with our Out of School Hours Care program, Extend. This process takes approximately 20 minutes. You may not plan to use the program, however, it provides a safeguard if you are running late and cannot make the 4.00pm pick up time. At 4.00pm staff on duty take all girls who are not picked up to OSHC. If your daughter is not enrolled she will be unable to attend. Therefore, it is a requirement for all families to create an online account. The details are below:

Thank you to the parents who attended the Junior, Middle and Upper Primary Parent Information Evenings this week. These evenings provided an excellent opportunity for parents to become more aware of classroom procedures and programs and gave them the chance to ask questions.

Friends of Junior SchoolFriends of Junior School (FJS) is a committee of Junior School parents who volunteer to organise events that help create a friendly and supportive community.

The largest school event is the annual Twilight Picnic, which will be held on Friday 28 February 2020 at the Senior School oval. An array of activities and entertainment has been organised to cater for all ages. Junior School parents are regularly involved with the running of the food stalls, the cupcake decorating stall and contributing home-baked goods for the cake stall. If you could spare an hour on the evening, or if you would like to contribute a batch of cakes, cookies or slices, we would love for you to sign up as a volunteer at this link: https://bit.ly/2GXhYz5

To volunteer for other FJS events during the school year such as the Junior Sports Day (Prep, Year 1 and Year 2), Easter Bake Stall, House Athletics Sports Day, Mothers’ Day Stall and Mothers’ Day Breakfast, please sign up at this link: https://bit.ly/2tCMtHC

We appreciate your help at these events and we value your time in making each event a success for our children and parents. We look forward to seeing you throughout the year.

The Easter Service for this year will be held on Thursday 26 March (Week 9A) at 2.15pm (finishing at

approximately 3.20pm).

The Service will be held in the Betty Caldwell Hall, Junior School.

The Magic of ChildhoodThis is a wonderful time at the Early Learning Centre. The children are now becoming settled and beginning to feel that they are valued members of their group. Each child needs time to establish connections and friendships with the children and teachers in their class and internalize the timetable of the day’s activities. As I have walked from room to room I see busy, engaged children, all excited and eager to participate. They are sharing their world with each other and becoming active communicators.

At the ELC we are thinking about how to think; learning about how to learn. The children are already rich and strong and resourceful, natural thinkers with much to contribute. These early years are crucial learning years, for it is in this period that children form conceptions of themselves as users of language, as thinkers and as social beings. Their imagination, their curiousity and their inventiveness enables them to test out their ideas and build on their understanding.

A common theme throughout many of the programs during these first few weeks has been the discussion of identity. Who am I? What do I look like? Why am I special? What makes me happy? Many of the children have been busy drawing their self-portrait - they were asked to look in the mirror and draw their interpretations of what they saw. Each tells a unique story and is a window into their thoughts and many of these are on display throughout the Centre. Spirited discussions have followed and these have helped the children in their understandings of one another. The following quotes are a sample of their reflections.

• I’m 4 years old. I live up the road with my mummy, my brother, my sister and my dad. Vivian, Nate and Arya are my friends. I like to play with Lego and unicorns. I’m good at dancing, running, and soccer. I want to learn about science and about water. I want to know how the waves get up. My favourite food is pasta. I speak Italian and English. - Milana

• “My name is Amiya and I’m 4. I live in Surrey Hills. My family is mummy, daddy and Anjali, my sister. I have 5 fish and their names are Goldie, Mouldy, Shouldy, Soldy, and Rolldy. Arya and Carolyne are my friends. I like doing pasting, drawing and playing hide and seek with my sister. I’m good at drawing rainbows and flowers. I know about doing things like pasting. Mum says you can make a mess but you have to clean it up. I would like to learn how to draw dinosaurs and crocodiles. My favourite food is chicken and rice.” - Amiya

• “I love painting and pasting. I like to play at the playground, on the swing and slide. My favourite colour is blue, pink and red. I went to Luna Park. I went on a spider ride, it went very fast and my daddy was scared on it. I love my little toy dog, I like how fluffy he is. I live with my Mummy, Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa. My mummy is having a new baby soon and I am going to help her.” – Hannah

• “My name is Joelle and I am 4 years old. I live in a very big house in Australia with my mummy, daddy and grandma. My friends are Ella, Esme, Mira and Cindy. I like to play with them. I like playing with tea sets and the home corner and making some food. I want to learn about birds and how they fly. My favourite is butter and bread. I speak Chinese at home with mummy and daddy.” – Joelle

• “My name is Amelia and I am 4 years old. My parents and brother live at my house. I have a cat named Maggie. My friends are Ava and Ruby. I like to play with the blocks, cooking in homecorner and painting. I am good at making things at the making table. I am good at drawing and I like to draw flowers. I know about cooking. I cook cakes with mum. I love to eat popcorn. I talk English at home.” – Amelia

• “I love playing in the home corner in Balgonie, playing in the sandpit, playing with the blocks and making houses with them. I went to the beach and the water was a little bit cold. My Mummy and my Granny came along with me. My favourite colour is green. I have a dog and her name is Roxy, she is brown and white. I live with my Mummy and Daddy and Roxy.” - Gabriella

• “I am four years old and my name is Carlos. I have a lot of family: my dad, my mum, my grandpa and my sister Heidi. At home I like to build with my blocks, I make really tall buildings. My favourite food is French fries and pizza but I’m not allowed to have it every day.” - Carlos

Everyone has shared a positive image of themselves and we will continue to document their learning and support the children on their journey. The magic of childhood is all around us as we promote and celebrate each child’s unique contribution to the life of the Early Learning Centre at PLC!
