2018 SEC Outdoor Track and Field | Week 8» Alabama

The Alabama men’s track & field team remains No. 3, while the Crimson Tide women moved up six spots to No. 17 in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) outdoor rankings released Monday. Alabama’s Daniel Haugh set a school record in the hammer throw to highlight a seven-victory day for the Crimson Tide at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La., on April 28. Haugh won the hammer with a school record mark of 241-2 (73.50m). The junior bettered the previous UA record by seven feet and is the first man to surpass 240 feet in the event in Alabama history. For the Tide women, junior Portious Warren was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put with a mark of 55-3 ¾ (16.86m). The effort ranks No. 6 all-time at Alabama and is Warren’s sixth top-10 school mark in the event this season. Alabama will be off this weekend in preparation for the 2018 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 11-13, in Knoxville, Tenn.

» Arkansas

Men: The No. 11 Arkansas men’s track and field team took first at the inaugural National Relay Championships hosted at John McDonnell Field. The Razorbacks posted a team total of 52 points over the two-day meet. In the first relay of the day, the Razorbacks finished with a time of 38.59 as senior Kenzo Cotton built a comfortable lead down the homestretch to secure Arkansas’ win in the event. The time was good for the third-best in program history, as well as the fastest time in the nation this season edging out LSU’s time of 38.84 set during the opening week of the outdoor season at the PAC-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge in Tempe, Ariz. The Razorbacks picked up another win in the 4×200-meter relay in a race that was tightly contested until the final leg when Florida dropped the baton and failed to finish the race. The race gave Ar-kansas a commanding advantage heading into the final relay of the night, the 4-x-400-meter relay. In the 4-x-400-meter relay, the Razorbacks and Florida once again were ahead of the pack for most of the race. Arkansas’ anchor Obi Igbokwe and Florida’s Grant Holloway traded places throughout the final leg of the race, with Holloway coming out in front by just over a half of a second stop-ping the clock for Florida at 3:02.68. The Razorbacks time of 3:03.36 is the fourth-fastest time in the country this season. The Race gave the Razorbacks six points and secured its title finish at the inaugural National Relay Cham-pionships. Scoring was determined in a traditional scoring format, with the relays only counting towards points. Coming into the day the Razorbacks had 16 points from a first-place finish in the 4×1500-meter relay and a third-place finish in the sprint medley relay. Women: On the final day of the inaugural National Relay Championships No. 5 Arkansas finished strong in primetime on the SEC Network taking second-place with 28-points combined over the two-day meet. The pole vault group was well represented on day two of the Nation-al Relay Championships. Morgan Hartsell set a personal-best clearing the first four bars she attempted cleanly, with the last bar raised to 4.02m (13’-2.25”) finishing second in the early section of the women’s pole vault. Elizabeth Ramos Mata also competed in the early section of the pole vault finishing 10th-overall. In the invite section of the women’s pole vault, Lexi Jacobus and Tori Hoggard dominated the field finishing with identical clearances of 4.51m (14’-9.50”) finishing first and second, respectively. Hoggard moved up to the No. 3 spot in the NCAA, while Jacobus remains No. 2 in the NCAA with her clearance of 4.55m (14’-11”) at the Texas Relays earlier this season. In the first event on the track, the women’s 4-x-100-meter relay, the team of Janeek Brown, Kiara Parker, Jada Baylark, and Morgan Burks Magee carried the baton to the tune of 43.38 in a second-place finish. The time is the second-fastest time in program history falling four one-hundredths of a second (.04) off the school record pace of 43.34 set last season. Arkansas currently boasts the seventh-fastest 4-x-100-meter relay in the country.

» Auburn

Tigers’ sophomore sophomore sprinter Raheem Chambers won the men’s 100m dash championship invitational, senior men’s thrower Justin Carter claimed gold in the men’s college javelin throw and junior Kylee Carter won the women’s javelin throw. The women’s 4x100m relay won the College Cham-pionship of America title with a time of 44.14. The quartet of freshman Renae Shaw, seniors Jonielle Smith and Dominique Bullock and sophomore Natalliah

Whyte became Auburn’s first 4x100m relay champions at Penn Relays since 1993. Chambers won the 100 with a time of 10.22, just two one-hundreths shy of his collegiate best, to outdistance Houston’s Cameron Burrell (10.29). Chambers became Auburn’s fourth sprinter to win the men’s 100m at the Penn Relays and first since Olympian Coby Miller won in 1999 with an iden-tical time of 10.22. Kylee Carter won the Tigers’ first Penn Relays title as she claimed the women’s javelin throw on Day 1 of the relays with a school record throw of 54.78m/179-8. Her mark was the longest at Penn Relays since 1996 and moved her into the No. 8 ranking nationally. Vying for Auburn’s fifth title of the relays, the men’s 4x400m relay came up just short, claiming second in 3:03.52. Xavier Coakley, Akeem Bloomfield, Chaison Tenkiang and Nathon Allen’s time was the tenth fastest in school history and a season’s best for the Tigers. Auburn will next be in action May 11-13 at the Southeastern Confer-ence Outdoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

» Florida

Florida closed the National Relay Championships with five times and marks that rank fifth or higher on the national descending order list, including Yanis David’s school record-breaking triple jump—which put her on the Collegiate All-Time Top 10 list. Both the men’s and women’s triple jump were adrena-line-filled, action-packed competitions. The former produced the top seven collegiate jumpers of the season, while the latter saw David become the No. 7-ranked performer in collegiate history. David broke Ciarra Brewer’s four-year-old school record (13.91 meters / 45 feet, 7.75 inches) twice, posting a mark of 13.97 meters (45 feet, 10 inches) on her third attempt, and immediately following it with a massive hop, skip, and jump of 14.13 meters (46 feet, 4.25 inches). The Lamentin, Guadeloupe native’s jump was the 15th-farthest in col-legiate history. David only sits behind American and collegiate record holder, Georgia’s Keturah Orji, in the national rankings.

» Georgia

Women: The Lady Bulldogs surged to fourth in the latest national rankings last week following a weekend in Southern California that featured scorers of stellar performances, including the No. 2 triple jump mark in collegiate history, a school record and two national leading marks. Senior Keturah Orji collected two marks on the all-time top-10 collegiate list, including her winning mark of 47 feet, ¼ inch that stands second in the NCAA record books. She ranks fourth on the 2018 world list and leads the nation by nearly a foot and a half. Sophomore Jessica Drop shaved 22 seconds off the 5000-meter run school record by winning the Invitational at Mt. SAC with a time of 15:38.57, which ranks 11th in the world this year. Drop’s twin sister Samantha also posted a personal best, hers coming in the 10,000m after she was seventh in the Invitational with a 33:28.89. A national leader came for the Lady Bulldogs in the high jump as senior Tatiana Gusin turned her second meet of 2018 to a 6-2 top collegiate finish (third overall). Back to the track, freshman Lynna Irby made her outdoor career debut in the 400m and sped to the second-fastest time in school history of 50.95. This finish ranks third nationally and eighth in the world this year. She also joined Tara Davis, Kate Hall and Louisa Grau-vogel in the 4x100m as the foursome registered a 43.90, which is second in school history and best since 1999. While Davis clocked a 13.17 to take seventh in the 100m hurdles, she also won the long jump Invite after equaling her personal record of 21-9. Sophomore Amber Tanner also experienced a personal record in the 800m Invitational thanks to a 2:07.13, which ranks eighth on the school’s all-time list. Sophomore Tairyn Montgomery went a personal-best distance of 167-11 to take sixth in the javelin and move to sixth in the school record books. As she continues to train for the postseason, Grauvogel also matched her career best in the long jump with an 18-7.25. In the shot put, senior Anna Machovec lifted a season-best mark of 49-1 to take second. » Vanderbilt

For the second consecutive day, a Commodore middle-distance relay four-some ran extremely well at the Penn Relays but could not eclipse the existing school record. The 4x800-meter relay unit of senior Courtney Clayton, junior Ginger Hutton, sophomore Kendall Derry and sophomore Reagan Bustaman-te finished the race in 8:41.71, the second fastest time ever recorded by a Vanderbilt foursome. The effort earned a fifth-place finish behind Villanova, Indiana, Monmouth and Penn. Like the Commodores’ 4x1,500-meter relay attempt on Friday, the 4x800-meter foursome narrowly missed lowering the school record of 8:38.34 established at the 2017 Tennessee Relays. While the Vanderbilt middle distance corps was impressing in Pennsylvania Saturday, freshman sprinter/jumper Sophia Falco produced two collegiate-bests and matched another competing at the Lyles-Wood Track and Field Invitational in Louisville. Clayton, a senior who is showing excellent form after missing two months of competition, provided a strong opening leg for the Commodores, handing the baton to Hutton after a 2:08.83 split. Hutton maintained the team’s position with a 2:11.73 segment, handing off to Derry, who produced a 2;12.69 split. Bustamante capped the relay with an impressive 2:08.48 anchor leg.
