Week 8 Studio Journal

This weeks activty was an ‘IN DETAIL’ drawing on a 1:1 scale by producing a blow up of a particular 1:10 detail from our site drawings.

My 1:10 detail

My given detail was a colorbond metal deck, box gutter, flashing to the para-pet which is situated over a bi-fold door frame.

‘In Detail’ activity - composition

Primary structure

The main primary structures identified in my detail is the pre fabricated concrete column which sits above the bi-fold doorframe. On top of this section this is where the color-bond flashing to parapet occurs. My particular detail dod not encompass much of the primary structures/elements which are evident throughout the building.

Secondary structure

Various secondary structure elements are present in the detail: purlin (under the metal deck), rafter, timber block (under box gutter), steel rods and the angled fixings for the steel rods.

‘In Detail’ activity - sustainability and environmental analysis

The box gutter is designed simply yet effectively in order to serve its prupose as a water drainage function. It is 300mm wide which is the minummum require-ment and is supported underneath which allows for ‘foot traffic’ during main-tanence. This is a sustainable design as during service the box gutter does not need to have parts removed and replaced . The design is also quite cheap with the use of steel decking below; very availiable source. The pre fabricated concrete column and trusses reduce on-site labour cost and speeds up the conctruction process (Bowens 2013).

Pros of design

Affordable, material used is in abundance. The colorbond metal decking is an effiecient material for support, covering and faclitation of drainage. The para-pet is a solid structural framework. The rafter provide adequate foundation support for the box gutter.

Cons of design

Water leakage may occur in the future due to the foudnation of the box gut-ter; a double membrane coating for waterproofing could solve this problem. The pre fabricated concrete column may not maintain in the event of harsh natural conditions or events. A load bearing wall structure may suit better.

Diagram of a pre fabricated room made from sectional panels. Most of the structural system of the room is already complete; can be constructed on site.
