Paul's Second Journey

Focus Passage: Acts 16:1-5,11-15; 17:16-34; 18:1-11

Key Bible Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:25

Life ApplicationI can pray for and support missionaries.

Level of Biblical Learning (Community and World)God wants people to pray for specific needs of missionaries and people groups.

Have you ever been on a week-long trip with someone? Was it difficult to be with that person 24/7? How would you feel if God called you and a friend to travel around the world telling people about Him?•Read Acts 16:1-5,11-15. Paul was committed to

the ministry in which God called him. Because of his passion, Paul preached wherever possible and to whoever would listen. Notice one of his listeners in Philippi, Lydia, was described as a "worshiper of God." When was the last time someone looked at you and saw a "worshiper of God"?

•Read Acts 17:16-34. Place yourself in Paul's sandals. What would you have done? Do you have the courage to point out the false gods people serve? Would you be willing to tell the people what they were doing is wrong? What impact did Paul have on the people? Although many rejected Paul's teaching, some believed. Think about the impact you have on people. Not everyone who hears you will accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, but hopefully some will.

•Read Acts 18:1-11. Notice the words of God in verses 9-10. After the Jews rejected Jesus, Paul turned to the Gentiles. He would preach to whomever would listen. How often do we try, realize our limits, and give up? How much more effective would we be if we spoke where possible and left the convicting to God?

•Pray for opportunities to tell people about Jesus. Also pray for specific needs of missionaries and people groups around the world. Ask God to help you guide children to see and participate in praying for missionaries and people groups.

Greetings from the Kolb family. My wife and

I serve as missionaries in Adana, Turkey

alongside our 15-year-old daughter and

10-year-old son. Adana, Turkey is near

Tarsus where the apostle Paul was born.

We work with the Turks in the major cities

of Mersin, Tarsus, and Adana. Paul planted

many churches during his time in this area.

Now there are only six active evangelical

churches in these cities where more than 3

million people live. Like Paul, we are working

to train leaders and plant more churches in

this area. Pray for God's work here.

Letters (August 12) Worship KidStyle Children’s Edition, Summer 2012© 2012 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Printed in USA. OK to copy.

Letter 1 – Acts 16:1-5

I recently traveled to Derbe (DUHR bih) and Lystra (LISS truh). In Lystra, Silas and I met a young man named Timothy. Timothy is the son of a Jewish woman who believes in Jesus. Timothy's father is Greek. The believers at both Lystra and Iconium (igh KOH nih uhm) said good things about Timothy. I invited Timothy to join us on our travels. Together we helped the people know and understand more about Jesus. The churches grew stronger and more people believed and asked Jesus to be their Savior.

Letter 2 – Acts 16:11-15Silas, Timothy, and I have traveled to many

different cities lately. Recently we were in Philippi (FIH lih pigh), a Roman colony in the district of Macedonia (MASS uh DOH nih uh). One Sabbath, we went outside the city to an area near the river to pray. We met a group of women who had gathered there. While talking with the women, a lady named Lydia listened to us. Lydia was a seller of purple cloth, but more importantly she worshiped God. God caused Lydia to pay special attention to what I said. Lydia and everyone in her household believed in Jesus and were baptized. She asked us to stay with her family.

Letter 3 – Acts 17:16-34Silas, Timothy, and I have separated. Silas and Timothy stayed in

Beroea (bih REE uh) to help the believers there while I traveled to Athens. I was greatly troubled when I saw all of the idols in the city. While at the synagogue I met with the Jews and others who worshiped God. I also met with people each day in the market. I have had some people argue with me about what I teach. One day, I met with a group of people at the Areopagus (ehr ih AHP uh guhs) (a rocky hill about 370 feet high). I said, "Men of Athens, I can see you are religious men. I have seen the objects you worship. I even saw an altar on which was written 'To an unknown God.' You do not worship the one true God. God is the Creator of the World and everything in it. God does not live in shrines or anything built by man. God has everything He needs. It is through God that we live and breathe. "

I continued, "God has overlooked the ignorance of people, but now He commands all people to repent. God has set a time when He will judge the world of its sin. God provided proof of His judgment when He raised Jesus from the dead."

When the people heard my words about the resurrection, some of them began to make fun of me. Other people said, "We want to hear you talk about this again." I left the people, but some of them came with me and believed what I told them.

Letter 4 – Acts 18:1-11I have now made my way to Corinth (KAWR inth). I met a man

and woman named Aquila (uh KWIL uh) and Priscilla (prih SIL uh). They came to Corinth because the ruler Claudius ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Aquila, Priscilla, and I have the job of tentmaking in common, so I stayed with them and helped them make tents. On the Sabbaths, I visit the synagogues and teach people about Jesus.

Recently Timothy and Silas joined me in Corinth. I have been teaching the people that Jesus is the Messiah, but many people do not believe what I say. I have told the Jews, "I am going to teach the Gentiles because you do not believe what I say."

I am glad to say that I met a man named Titius Justus (TIT ih uhs-JUHS tuhs) who is a worshiper of God. He lives next to the synagogue. Also, Crispus (KRISS puhs), the leader of the synagogue and his whole family, asked Jesus to be their Savior. Many others in Corinth did the same and were baptized.

One night God told me, "Don't be scared about speaking about me. Do not be quiet. I am with you. No one will harm you because I have many people in this city." For the next 18 months, I stayed in Cornith and taught the people about God.

olympicsFrozen Pennies Preparation Fill each pie pan ½ full with water. Allow to freeze until about half frozen. Place 10 pennies in

each pan. Completely freeze.

Playing Instructions Place the pie pans on the table. Guide the children to work together to free the pennies from the ice. First team to remove all of the pennies from the ice is the winner.

Penny Pinching Preparation Prepare gelatin as instructed on the box. Place 15 pennies in the gelatin.

Playing Instructions Place the gelatin on the table. Give each player a set of chopsticks. Guide the children to use the chopsticks to remove the pennies. Set a time limit for each set of players. First team to remove the most pennies is the winner.

Spoonful of Pennies Race Preparation Create starting and finish lines on the floor.

Playing Instructions Guide the teams to line up behind the starting line. Give the first player on each team a serving spoon and 1 penny. Say : "Place your penny on your spoon and hold it chest high. Race to the finish line and back.

Give the spoon to the next person on your team and add a penny. We will continue adding pennies until time is up. Let's see which team can earn the most pennies."

Explain: "If any pennies fall off of your spoon, you must leave them on the floor." Play as time permits, adding additional pennies each time.
