2017 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Offering hands to serve and hearts to love

This weekend every family in our parish will be asked to complete a Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) pledge form at Mass. If you have already donated through the mail or online or are not able to participate, there will be a place to note that on the form. After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs, offices and ministries that serve people in need and further Jesus’ Mission in our diocese.

From Our Bishop

February 26 -- Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: Isaiah 49:14–15, Psalm 62:2–3, 6–7, 8–9, 1 Corinthians 4:1–5, Matthew 6:24–34 In her video reflection, Kate Warner shows us how scriptures are “God’s divine love letter,” especially in this week’s readings. We are called to put all our trust in God, no matter how the world challenges us or causes us to worry. Reflection: How can you increase your trust in God when you are feeling worried or anxious?

Weekly Reflection Adapted from Opening the Word, an Augustine Institute Program available on FORMED.org

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: What a joy it is for me to be your new bishop. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first months as the shepherd of this great diocese and the opportunity to meet many of you at the Masses and events these past weeks. I am humbled by the warm and friendly welcome I have received and look forward to our collaboration in the Gospel Mission of Jesus in our diocese. I am excited to lead the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) this year and I know your pastors will now be asking your support for this very important appeal. Please be assured of my gratitude for the past gifts so many of you have given to the BLA and for your prayerful consideration of a pledge this year, as it allows our Church to serve so many people across our diocese. May Our Lord Jesus bless you and watch over you always.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Michael Burbidge Bishop of Arlington

February Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis Comfort for the Afflicted. That all those who are afflicted, especially the poor, refugees, and marginalized, may find welcome and comfort in our communities. URGENT: Sacredness of Life. We pray for the children who are in danger from the interruption of pregnancy, as well as for persons who are at the end of life — every life is sacred! — so that no one is left alone and that love may defend the meaning of life.

IT’S TIME FOR OUR ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE All Saints Parish in Manassas has invited St. James once again to participate in their 5-car and cash raffle. Prizes this year include five brand new 2017 vehicles from Koons of Manassas (Honda Civic, Buick Verano, GMC Sierra Truck, Honda CRV Sport Utility and Honda Odyssey Van). You will soon receive your car raffle tickets in the mail.

This raffle allows the purchaser of a single $5.00 ticket the prospect of winning a vehicle or a share of the $20,000 in cash prizes. This makes “selling” the tickets at work or to family, friends, and neighbors more like an opportunity – just show them the ticket – it will sell itself! The odds of winning with this raffle are far better than winning the Lottery or Power Ball. So please participate in this year’s car raffle. Our parish ministries will benefit! Last year, the car raffle earned nearly $12,000 for the parish.

Please direct any questions to Rich Blickendorfer at 703-532-8815.

Good luck!

Pro-Life Ministry Update

In a prior bulletin article, Fr. Posey encouraged each of us to participate in activities that promote and defend all life. “We do this because our support must go beyond just telling people not to abort, but to be there to help the person choose to give birth: through prayer, encouragement and practical assistance.” We help through prayer:

Please join us for the Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign (www.40daysforlife.com), beginning on Wednesday, March 1 in hundreds of cities and over 20 countries. Our local campaign will be in front of the Falls Church Healthcare Center, 900 South Washington Street. For 40 days and nights, people of faith and conscience will stand in constant, peaceful vigil outside hundreds of abortion facilities … to do the single most important thing we can do: PRAY. The kickoff vigil will be on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:00 pm at the same location. You

may also join prayer novenas through Priests for Life (www.priestsforlife.org) any time.

We help through action:

Tepeyac Family Center serves pregnant women of all races, creeds, and economic statuses, whether they can pay or not; a special aspect of their practice is to assist pregnant women in financial crisis. Tepeyac Family Center is moving into expanded facilities and needs funds to complete the project. Everything is required from stethoscopes to sponsorship of the waiting room. Interested in helping? Call 703-934-5552 or visit their website at www.divinemercycare.org/tepeyacexpanding

Social Outreach Committee Focus on Hunger-Lenten Food Collection

“Then the righteous will answer Him. ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?”

Matthew 25:37

During Lent, food collected at the doors of the Church will be given to the Falls Church Community Service Council food pantry at Knox Presbyterian Church, Food for Others (a food bank which distributes food to many in the northern Virginia area), and distributed through the St. James Food Distribution Program. Please consider donating 5-10 lb. bags of rice or kidney beans, boxes of cereal, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, and hearty soups. Your donations can be placed in the boxes near the doors of the Church after any mass. All donations of rice, beans and cereal will remain at St. James and be distributed through its monthly food distribution program. Each weekend other food items will go to these organizations: Weekend of March 4/5 - Falls Church Community Service Council Weekend of March 11/12 – Food for Others Weekend of March 18/19 – St. James Food Distribution Program Weekend of March 25/26 – St. James Food Distribution Program

This year we are celebrating our 125th anniversary with events, our oral history project and a weekly history lesson in our bulletin! Return here to relive our growth from a small frame church to our present iconic building which is home to thousands of parishioners.

Save the date for our celebratory Mass & Reception on Sunday, May 21 at the noon Mass!

125th Anniversary Initiative Update Thank you all who have already donated! The initiative will help us restore our pews and kneelers, repair our church and replace broken concrete. We have received over $100,000 in gifts and pledges and are grateful for each gift. Gifts of $1,250 or more will be recognized on a plaque in St. Anthony's chapel. Brochures about this initiative are available in church and on the parish website. Please contact Christine Hughes at [email protected] with questions. Will you help us reach our goal of $125,000 by March 1st?

Pastor of St. James, Father Tearney, having witnessed the cooperation of his parishioners to build a beautiful church, set his heart on a new parochial school. The original St. James School, surrounded by spacious playgrounds, was built on the corner of West Broad and Spring Streets. The school was a plain, two-story brick structure consisting of three classrooms on the first floor and an auditorium with a stage on the second floor. The basement contained a heating plant and an area where the students could play in bad weather. Each classroom served several grades with a mixed boy/girl class for grades 1-4; an all boy class grades 5-8; and in the largest classroom, an all girl class grades 5-8. The auditorium was the “scene of many happy occasions for parishioners who gathered often, in numbers up to 400, for potluck dinners, plays, concerts and other parish gatherings.” During Holy Week of 1906, the Sister of Perpetual Adoration from New Orleans came to West Falls Church. The Sisters were met by the Jesuit Fathers and Brothers from Georgetown College who accompanied them to St. James where they were greeted by Pastor Father Tearney. In September of that year they opened the new Catholic elementary school. One Sister later recalled: “The parochial school was a little rural school without sufficient number of children to occupy two teachers. Tuition had to be kept very low, “for it was, it seems, a very poor locality.” Tuition was $1 a month for the grade school. A member of the first St. James class recalls enrollment being approximately 35 students. But this image would change as St. James School began to achieve an excellent reputation with growing enrollment.
