RECORD BREAKING TEMPERATURESThe Spanish Met Office has announced that the aver-age temperatures for the month were some of the high-est on record, and the highest in 50 years for someareas like the Canaries. Throughout the month, theaverage temperature was just over 21 degrees, twodegrees more than normal. This is great news for tourists and holidaymakers want-ing the very best weather for their holidays, it’s alsogood news for business owners with outside areas.

Unfortunately the warm weather is not welcome to

farmers and people living out of town where they are atrisk of forest fires, with the area experiencing some ofthe worst cases ever over the last 12 months.

Volunteers for the Civil Protection Service in Javea andDenia are now in full operation, this is the group thathelps protect the natural park from the spread of fires, and are posted around the area at strategic viewpointsso they can raise the alarm and deal with any cases asquick as possible.

The first day of national strikes by airtraffic controllers looks to havepassed with little or no impact onflights according to Spanish sourcesalthough British mediahave reported differently.

It was the first two-hourstoppage in a series ofpartial strikes by Spanishair traffic controllers con-cluded at noon onMonday, with the secondstoppage in the eveningbetween 6pm and 8pm.Many Operators werereporting flight punctualityof 98 to 100% during theperiod of the stoppage, with no cancellationsbeing reported.

National flag carrier Iberia said thatall of their scheduled flights departed“Completely Normally,” with Enaire, the public agency that manages airnavigation in Spain, said 617 con-trollers out of the 955 normally onduty on a regular Monday morningwere at their posts between 10amand 12 noon.

However there was a flurry of frustra-tion and anger across social mediawith British passengers stranded inboth Stansted and Barcelona Gironawith Ryan Air taking a huge amountof the flak.

Passengers for a Ryanair flight from

Barcelona Girona airport to Stanstedairport were left stranded for 14hours by the walkouts. Those due onthe flight FR9803 arrived before 8am

for the 9.30am flight but were laterinformed the flight was being putback until 11.30pm tonight..

One woman whose fiancé was stuckin the airport waiting to fly back fromhisholiday told the Mirror: "They weretold it was a five-hour delay and thenthey put it back further to 7.15pm,and then 9.25pm and now 11.30pm.

Meanwhile passengers in Stanstedairport were also left stranded all dayas they waited to fly in the oppositedirection

Ryanair posted on its website thatthe delays to flight FR9803 were due

to the strikes but later emerged thatthey suffered a "minor" technicalissue.

More than 100 passen-gers were cooped up inthe airport all day unableto leave.

The partial strikes couldaffect up to 5,300 flights, close to 25% of the totalforecast for Spanish air-space during the time ofall the planned stoppages.Further strikes are expect-ed over the next few days,on the 10th, 12th and 14thJune which will be in two-hour periods during morn-ing and afternoon shifts, from 10am to 12pm, and

6pm to 8pm.

USCA, is the union which represents90% of the countries air traffic con-trollers, called for the strikes, toprotest a decision made by Enaire tosuspend 61 controllers fromBarcelona without pay for a month. This decision by the company is apunishment for bizarre strike inDecember 2010 that completely shutdown Spanish airspace.

If you are due to travel on thosedays, you are still being advisedto check with your airline beforeyou travel.

The renovation of the'Carabineros de l'Albir' (PoliceBarracks/HQ) and green areathat surrounds the building arethanks to the fantastic work ofthe municpilaties 'EmploymentWorkshops'

This paid training program of theEuropean Social Fund (ESF)worth over 270,000 euros, hasallowed 30 unemployed people inthe town to be working for 6months. "Thanks to these employ-ment workshops wehave created a greenarea outside the bar-racks, repopulatedwith native plantsreproduced in thenursery of theCarrascos park, andwe have also begunthe rehabilitation ofthe building, strength-ening the structureand renovating the

deck which was badlydamaged, "said themayor, Vicente Arques, after conducting a follow-up visit of the renovations."These are programs thatallow us, on the one hand, hiring unemployed peoplein the city and on theother, develop projects ofcultural and historical her-itage," he said.

The City of L'Alfas del Pihas requested a new employmentworkshop to continue the rehabilitationof the building. The police headquar-ters of l'Albir was built in 1829, wasone of the first barracks built in theprovince of Alicante along with Alteaand la Olla.

With this rehabilitation a significant partof the history of the town will be recov-ered,which at one point due to lack ofmaintenance, was in danger of totallydisappearing.

SALT MARSH DRYING UPThe Las Salinas de Calpe, one of the most significantenvironmental emblems inCalpe is now clearlyreflecting the rise in tem-perature and the issue ofdrought in the region.

The salt marsh that you canfind in the center of Calpe isconsidered a local beautyspot, but the warm weather is causing it to dry out, withthe bottom of the marsh now being clearly visible inplaces.

An image of Les Salines released by the ACEC Tuesdayshows how the water levels are dropping back from thebank, exposing the cracked bottom of the marshland. However, it's not just the lack of rain that’s causing the

dramatic drop in the waterlevel, as it has been discov-ered that there has been afault in the pump supplyingsea water to the wetlandwhich has now lost over18,000 cubic meters ofwater. To make mattersworse the backup pump hasalso been completely dam-aged leaving fears from the

town hall and community that the local ecosystem couldbe damaged.

The town council has ensured that new pump will beinstalled to help recover the lost water which will takeabout five days. According to the newspaper 'informa-cion', this new pump will be injecting water into thelagoon at about 90 cubic meters of water per hour.

1.- What is it?It is a document which certifies the actual condition, func-tioning, and sanitation of a property at the time of inspec-tion by means of a written and photographic report, whichis endorsed by the Spanish Association of ProfessionalHome Inspectors (ASIPV), an autonomous and inde-pendent organisation.

2.- How did it start?Home inspection services started in Spain only 10months ago, although they have been used in the UnitedStates since 1960 in order to provide an added guaran-tee in real estate transactions. Home inspection servicesare available in several countries in Europe, such as theUnited Kingdom, and are currently being implemented inothers.

3.- What is its purpose? To provide peace of mind , and to protect the interests ofsellers, buyers, owners, and tenants.

4.- Who needs a home condition report?Anyone who wants to buy, sell, or lease a property, oranyone who has already leased their property.

5.- Who issues a home condition report? The home condition report is issued by a homeinspector, who is a qualified and independentprofessional licensed by the Ministry forEducation and Culture.

6.- Why should I commission ahome condition report before leas-ing, buying, or selling a property? It is the only tool available in the mar-ket which will help you to avoid dis-agreeable surprises when selling orbuying of property. It also provideslandlords and tenants with an addedguarantee during rental transactions, and peace of mind.

7.- What added value does the home condition reportprovide? It enables home sellers to speed up and facilitate the saleby giving them an added advantage over other proper-ties, and also reassures potential buyers. It provides homebuyers with detailed and impartial infor-mation about the property, which enables them to take amore informed decision more quickly. It also enables buy-ers to negotiate the price. It allows landlords to claim for any damage caused to therental property, as the report is attached to the rentalagreement and signed by both parties. It also acts adeterrent, because the tenant knows that they have tovacate the property in the same condition as described inthe report. It enables landlords who have already leasedtheir property to be sure that it will be properly maintainedand used during the rental period. It guarantees tenantsthat the landlord cannot claim for any damage that wasalready present before they moved in.

8.- What added value does the home condition reportprovide that the reviews and inventories performed

by real estate agencies do not?The report is drawn up by a qualified professionalhome inspector, who has successfully completedthe training and practical period required by theAssociation. The inspection is meticulous andexhaustive, and must comply with the standards

and procedures laid down by the Association, while the inspectors should use the appro-

priate tools when nec-essary. This meansthat the contents ofthe report are muchmore than just aninventory, or a check-list. In addition, it isprepared by a thirdparty who has no biasto either side.

The Home Condition Report (HCR)One study notes that theregion is scarceValencian geographieswhere there has been arebound in the housingmarket and ensures thatthe houses in the handsof the banks are runningout.

The new promoter activi-ty is also reactivating inDenia, Calpe andBenissa.

What until now was asubjective feeling beginsto endorse with data: theMarina Alta is one of thefew regionsof the com-munity ofValencia thatis picking upin the thefirst quarterof this yearand thereport pre-pared byTinsa, whichshows in the areabetween Denia andVillajoyosa, 60% of cus-tomers who bought aholiday home is of inter-national origin. Buyersfrom the United Kingdomwere recorded as havingbeen the highest number

of purchases, followedby France and the Nordiccountries. The sale ofproperty to foreignerswas 8.557 in 2010 thento 16.443 last year 2014.

The analysis providestwo significant changesthat are that last yearsaw the decline for thedemand for the Russianmarket and insteadbroke out with theChinese, whichincreased by 63%. Longago investors in theAsian countries wereinterested in the Costa

Blanca along the coast, although in the numberof acquisitions of buyersstill is not very high, only243 purchases in 2015but with most dwellingstypes are town houses ofmore than 500,000euros.

FOOD AND DRINK

A place you can visit any time or foranything you fancy, well almost....If you want to stop by for a drink or snackthen no problem, and there is also a fullmenu available for lunch and dinner

served all day. Bistro Amics offers a warmwelcome to all and is perfectly posi-tioned on the main Avenida next doorto the Sunday market.

There are so many restaurants inAlbir and the main Avenida offers amassive choice. You can literally walkpast one after another with differentcuisines, so really how does onechoose? Well first and foremost rec-ommendation is the best guidance, although sometimes it is down tocuriosity and a mouth-watering menu.In this instance the multiple recom-mendations I received to visit BistroAmics made me eager, and excited.

The busy front terrace offers a comfortablesetting for a perfect lunch, although manyvisitors stop by for drinks and snacks. Therestaurant is spacious and full of naturallight, offering a quiet and a comfortableambiance. Daily specials boards are dis-played to add to the incredible choice ofdishes found on the menu. After muchdeliberating, the soup of the day was top ofmy list. French Onion Soup that can some-times fall below expectations, but not inthis case. The rich flavour of the broth withthe cheesy toast floating on top was a

great way to start my meal, and “10 out of10” for the chef’s recipe. My main coursewas also from the daily specials, DoverSole with a creamy lime sauce served withMediterranean vegetables and a choice of

jacket potato, chips or rice. The othermain course had to be one of the recom-mended favourites "Spicy Pork SpareRibs".

The food was delicious and the servicefrom the owner Tracy and her team wasimpeccable. Our meal was complimentedby a bottle of the house Rose which wasas enjoyable as the food. The Cubanhead chef incorporates a range of spicesand sauces in his cooking style. Themenu is quite different, with an offering of

international dishes. There are tapas to

share, pasta dishes, homemade burgers, salads, meats that include a half shoulderof lamb, Moroccan roast chicken, Steaksand ribs.

A trip to Albir with its wonderful walk to thelighthouse, as well as shops and a delight-ful beach, should be combined with a visitto Bistro Amics. Tracy and her team arewaiting to welcome you and from my expe-rience you will be overwhelmed with thequality of their food. Reservations are nowbeing taken for Valentine’s Day, so bookearly to avoid disappointment.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Just because things are going well and life is running smoothly, it doesn’t giveyou a license to act like a prima donna. Consider the feelings of those aroundyou and give out what you’d like to receive. The lunar high on Thursday bringsnew interesting people into your life.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

There’s no denying you have good ideas, coupled with assertive actions, butthrowing in your lot with others will only enhance the process for all concerned,so it’s a win/win for everyone. Minor challenges will be quashed immediately asyou move into a stress free weekend.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

If you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing, or what is expected of youin a working scenario, don’t be tempted to wing it or you may end up with egg onyour face. Asking others what they need from you isn’t a failing. In fact they’llapplaud your assertive approach.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Don’t be too quick to jump to conclusions in the work and career zone as youmay be way off the mark. Midweek incentives keep you moving in the right direc-tion, and as your confidence grows, you’ll feel comfortable enough to make yourown suggestions over work plans.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Instead of working out what you’re going to do next over work, money and socialposition, it would be nice to put your partner’s wants and needs before your ownthis week. You’re optimistic about where you could go as a couple, but you needto let them know as well you know.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

You seem very lacking in self discipline this week, which is unlike you, but itdoesn’t actually matter, as your charm and uncanny knack of getting your ownway will see you through to success in just about everything you do. Your worklife and social life are buzzing this week.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

You can no longer ignore the fact that you’re not very good at organising person-al money matters, and that’s why you usually end up frustrated and worried asbills start to come in. Use your powers of communication to find the informationyou need to help you sort it out.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

It’s one of those weeks where you feel like taking chances. You’ll stick out yourneck at work by going after a promotion, you’ll take a gamble financially byinvesting in something new, but your biggest risk taker will be going for gold overrelationships. Do I hear wedding bells?

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

You can’t quite put your finger on why, but you’re edgy and irritated and it’s start-ing to wear you down. Take a step back and try to think logically. Slow andsteady wins the race, and once you find out where the hiccup is located, you’llrectify it immediately and will get back to life running smoothly.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

If you’re finding it hard to get your ideas across to others, or if you find it hard tokeep their attention, maybe you need to ask yourself why others are constantlychanging the goal posts. It’s not conducive to moving ahead with confidence anddirection is it? Put your foot down.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You seem to have captivated everyone around you and they’re now eating out ofyour hand. Use this influence to bring them around to your point of view, as luckis on your side and you’re willing to take risks. Mixing business with pleasure is agood move for you this week.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Ask yourself if your high handed attitude is what’s stopping you getting along withothers? I think it may have a lot to do with it. If only they realised you’re actinglike this because you’ve lost confidence in yourself. Maybe coming clean wouldshow others you’re only human.

The Latest BUZZ from the Motoring World

‘Clueless’ British Motorists At Risk Driving Abroad

British motorists are taking big riskson roads abroad, with only 50% oftravellers checking road laws andregulations before getting behind thewheel overseas.

While driving on the right-hand sideof the road is the main thing occupy-ing our minds when we drive abroad, other local motoring laws are oftenoverlooked.

Research by price comparison siteGo Compare has revealed that onein 10 of travelling motorists believedthe driving laws to be the same over-seas as they are in the UK.

And this is just the start, as it alsohas been noted that 50% of driverson holiday think they don’t needadditional insurance, while 75% fail,do not bother or dont feel like theyneed to arrange breakdown coverbefore they go away.

When driving overseas you have toalso be aware of certain differencesand changes to road rules that arespecific to the country you are in. InFrance, for example, motorists needto travel with a personal breathal-

yser, whilebespec t a c l eddrivers in Spainmust carry aspare pair ofglasses.

Matt Oliver, cari n s u r a n c espokesperson atGo Compare, said that driversshould check outlocal driving laws before travelling toavoid falling foul of the law.

“Speed limits, traffic signals and pri-orities, local rules on alcohol lim-its, the use of mobilephones and safetyrequirements differfrom one country tothe next. Many peoplecould find themselvesfacing on-the-spotfines or run the risk ofan otherwise avoidableaccident if they fail to plan ahead.

“Gocompare.com has created aninteractive European driving map toallow drivers to check the key motor-

ing rules and requirements ofEuropean countries they are plan-ning to visit.

“It also allows drivers to print out theinformation theyneed to keepin their glovebox, alongwith theirphrasebook.”

PAPER LICENSE AXEDCAR HIR HAVOC

The abolition of the paperpart of the driving licenceon Monday, has seenhavoc for people trying touse the new service.

An online service isreplacing the paper coun-terpart, which shows adriver's record, includingoffences and endorse-ments.

Anyone having to showtheir driving record to carhire companies nowneeds to view theirlicence information onlineand generate a checkcode so details can beshared with third parties.

But the AA has said anumber of its membershad problems with thewebsite, which wasreportedly down for atime on its first day.

The DVLA said car rentalcompanies in the UK andabroad were well awareof the changes, but theAA had anticipated "wide-spread confusion".

A survey by money.co.uk

suggested as many as79% of people couldarrive at a hire office withincorrect documents.

Transport Minister LordAhmad said replacing thepaper counterpart with anonline service "will savemotorists money andreduce unnecessary redtape".

"It will also benefitemployers and vehiclehire companies," he said."Relying on the counter-part meant relying on apotentially out-of-datepiece of paper."

But the AA warnedagainst tearing up thepaper section of the driv-ing licence just yet, say-ing those hiring vehiclesoverseas should hold onto their counterpart as a"belt and braces" meas-ure.

The changes do notapply in Northern Ireland, where licences stillrequire the plastic photo-card and paper counter-part sections.

Do your legs hurtwhen you walk?

If so, read on….There are many reasons why people may experiencepain associated with walking one of those being intermit-tent claudication (IC) Patients with IC, complain ofaching, cramping or tired legs that is brought about byexercise and relieved by resting for a few minutes.Depending on the degree of the problem, patients mayexperience pain in the buttocks, thigh, calf or foot. Othersymptoms may include aching, burning or weakness.Sometimes, claudication can affect the arms too.

Although it may be considered a disease, claudication isactually a symptom of disease. Most often, claudicationis a symptom of peripheral vasuclar disease (PVD), apotentially serious, but treatable problem of the circula-tion caused by atherosclerosis.Atherosclerosis means that the arteries are clogged withclumps of fat, cholesterol and other material, known ath-erosclerotic plaques. These plaques

can make the arteries narrow, reducing blood flow. Youfeel pain because your leg muscles are not gettingenough oxygenated blood. Oxygen is the fuel that mus-cles need to work.

This is the same process that leads to angina but theheart muscle is starved of oxygen leading to pain. For

this reason,claudication iss o m e t i m e sreferred to asangina of thelegs.

You are morelikely to devel-op atheroscle-rosis if you:

• Smoke• Have high cholesterol• Have high blood pressure• Have high levels of homocysteine• Are obese (a body mass index over 30)• Are diabetic• Are over 70 years of age • Are over 50 years of age and you also smoke or havediabetes• Have a family history of atherosclerosis, peripheral vas-cular disease or claudica-tion Claudication can betreated with medicationsto reduce cholesterol, improve blood supply andkeep the blood thin.Sometimes an angioplas-ty will be performed andthe artery widened usinga balloon or a stent put inplace. In other cases, theblocked artery is replacedwith a healthy blood ves-sel taken from anotherpart of the body.

If you experience pain inyour legs you shouldseek medical advice tofind out exactly what is causing it and to rule out deepvein thrombosis (DVT) which requires urgent treatment.

The hip joint is composed of the ball and the socket. The development of hip dysplasia is determined byan interaction of genetic and environmental factors, though there is a complicated pattern of inheritancefor this disorder, with multiple genes involved. Hipdysplasia is the failure of the hip joints to developnormally (known as malformation), gradually deterio-

rating and leading to loss of function of the hipjoints.Hip dysplasia is one of the most common skeletal dis-eases seen in dogs. Gender does not seem to be a fac-tor, but somebreeds are morelikely to have thegenetic predisposi-tion for hip dyspla-sia than otherbreeds. Large andgiant breeds aremost commonlyaffected, includingthe Great Dane,Saint Bernard,L a b r a d o rRetriever, andGerman Shepherd. Rarely, small breed dogs can also beaffected, but are less likely to show clinical signs.

Hip dysplasia often begins while a dog is still young andphysically immature. Early onset usually develops afterfour months of age. There are also cases of later onset, where hip dysplasia develops later due to osteoarthritis,a form of joint inflammation (arthritis) that is character-ized by chronic deterioration, or degeneration of the jointcartilage.

Symptoms and Types - Symptoms depend on the

degree of joint looseness or laxity, the degree of jointinflammation, and the duration of the disease.• Early disease: signs are related to joint looseness orlaxity• Later disease: signs are related to joint degenerationand osteoarthritis• Decreased activity• Difficulty rising• Reluctance to run, jump, or climb stairs• Intermittent or persistent hind-limb lameness, oftenworse after exercise “Bunny-hopping,” or swaying gait• Narrow stance in the hind limbs (back legs unnaturallyclose together)• Pain in hip joints• Joint looseness or laxity – characteristic of early dis-ease; may not be seen in long-term hip dysplasia due toarthritic changes in the hip joint• Grating detected with joint movement• Decreased range of motion in the hip joints• Loss of muscle mass in thigh muscles• Enlargement of shoulder muscles due to more weightbeing exerted on front legs as dog tries to avoid weighton its hips, leading to extra work for the shoulder musclesand subsequent enlargement of these muscles

Causes - Influences on the development and progres-sion of hip dysplasia are concurrent with both genetic andenvironmental factors: • Genetic susceptibility for hip looseness or laxity• Rapid weight gain and obesity• Nutritional factors• Pelvic-muscle mass

Diagnosis - Your veterinarian will perform a completephysical exam on your dog, including a blood chemicalprofile, a complete blood count, an electrolyte panel anda urinalysis. Inflammation due to joint disease may benoted in the complete blood count.

As part of surveying the physical symptoms and fluidwork-ups, your veterinarian will also need a thorough his-tory of your dog's health, onset of symptoms, and anypossible incidents or injuries that may have contributed toyour dog's symptoms. Any information you have on yourdog's parentage will be helpful as well, as there may bea genetic link.

X-rays are crucial for visualizing the signs of hip dyspla-sia. Some of the possible findings may be degenerativedisease of the spinal cord, lumbar vertebral instability, bilateral stifle disease and other bone diseases.

WOMEN IN BUSINESSMaria Victoria Gorena - Sirenas Spain School and Events

Maria Victoria Gorena, the creator and owner ofSirenas Spain School & Events.

She is a Professor of Physical Education from Argentinaand since 8 years of age, she specialised in synchro-nized swimming, water polo and swimming lessons. “Ihad been teaching swimming for more than 10 years toadults and kids. For the last year, I stopped teaching syn-chronized swimming because I was really stressed doingso many things at the same time.” Last February, my

mother asked mewhy I stoppedsomething that Ilove so much, thatmade me happy, and she told me astory about a ladyin Germany thatcreated mer-maids. In thatmoment I realisedthat this was per-fect for me. I con-tacted this lady inGermany andanother mermaidin America whohelped me to startup this idea. For

the last two years I organised two synchronized swim-ming shows for Aqua Natura, Benidorm. So after thatexperience, I thought that Aqua Natura was the rightplace to do it!

Aqua Natura gave me the opportunity to start with thisgreat idea straight away because they knew that it wouldwork, and from this, I created my own style of mermaidschool that is unique in all of Spain.

We not only teach ”mermaiding”, we created a completemermaid style with makeup, hairstyle, tattoos, etc, all asa real mermaid.

What do we do?

We have 3 focuses:

Mermaid school

1. We created our own Mermaids, hairstyle with shell, star fish, pearls, crowns, etc. All the accessories aremade by us. You can have a lovely Mermaid style. ForMermen we have tattoos.

2. Waterproof makeup that match with the color of thetail. (We have 5 differents colors)

3. Photo session as a Mermaid or Mermen

4. We teach you how to swim with the tail and you canlive the experience to be a real Mermaid. At the swim-ming lesson, we teach how to breath properly, swimmingin different positions, choreographies and underwaterpictures!. We mix our knowledge of synchronized swim-ming and diving. And this summer we are planning aMermaid camp for those who wants to learn more aboutMermaiding and became a really mermaid.

M e r m a i dPhotoshoot

This is forclients thatreally fancybeing aMe rma i dor Mermenbut theyare notgood swim-mers, or little

girls that can’tswim yet. We

don’t leave themout! You can be a

Mermaid for a while in aphotoshoot session, where you will receive specialmake-up, hairstyle, accessories and the best pictureswith your tail on! And it’s super fun!

Mermaids Show

We are the only ones in Spain that do a show. OurMermaids are professional synchronized swimmers andthey are really Mermaids when they put on the tail! Weare getting ready for June to start our new show in differ-ent hotels around the area. You can’t miss it!

We also offers birthday parties, Mermaids and Mermenparties and Mermaid shows.

We have been there since Aqua Natura opened on 15thMay and since we started there, the people love it! Inever thought that so many people would dream to be aMermaid. Incredible! Its their dream for all of their life andthey thank me for making it real. So in Sirenas Spain, wemake dreams come true!

Children

They love make up and tattoos and having fun with thetail. We also improve their swimming skills and for thosewho are not good swimmers, we help them to do it better. Some kids said they are practicing to improve swimmingso they can come to swim with the tail! SO cute!

The Alfas 2nds met not so bright butvery very early to make the trip downto Almanzora for their next leaguematch looking for the win that wouldkeep them top of the table and keeppressure on the opposition teams. With 4 of the team travelling downthe night before, some at least wouldbe well rested going into the game.

Arriving at Almanzora, we were allimpressed with the pitch, lovely flatgrass and a well fitted mat. WithAlmanzora winning the toss but onlyhaving 6 players at the start, theirdecision was made for them to batand Alfas took the field but earlyinroads did not come as hoped. Bothopeners for Almanzora stood fast inthe face of the opening spell andtook the score past 30 before thechange of bowlers started to work forAlfas.

Waqer got Winter to pop one back tohim for a C&B to get the ball rolling.Second change bowler Dell then gotnew man Stanard to edge behind,Byrne taking it down the leg side. However, Murbasha, after survivinga strong LBW shout, got swingingand with Larkins at the other end puton another 30 before Larkins, tryingto direct one with a slight dabthrough the slips could only end up

playing on off Dell. Shoiab joinedMurbasha in the middle and took aliking to the bowling, while Murbashafell to the next change, young laun-don keeping the ball straight andMurbasha picking out Bash Ali in theCovers.

This is when the game went a bitMental...As Samran came out to bat,Shioab having come late to thegame, did not know that clearing thefence was a dot ball and not a 6 ashe believed. He did however man-age to pick out Byrne's car in theparking lot to lessen his frustration! At the other end, Samran was enjoy-ing the benefits of Alfas long trip get-ting dropped 3 times in two oversbefore a catch was finally held. Asthe umpire raised his finger andSamran trudged off, Skipper Permanwho took the catch showed Alfasplay hard but fair and called Samranback, admitting that he touched thefence converting the catch to a 6 andgiving Samran another life! However, after some entertaining fireworks,Laundon had had enough and gotSamran to edge behind where hewas held and the tail began to enterthe fray. Howells hit a couple of quick4's before edging behind for Byrne's3rd catch of the day. Campy wasstumped off Perman for 0 and when

last man, actually nº 9 for Almanzorachipped one to K. Perman off J.Perman for 0, Almanzora were all outfor 141, including 25 wides!

Following a 30 minute break, Nix andMcKinnstry strode out to the middlefor Alfas to start the chase. Nix fellearly to Murbasha for 8, clipping toGully, K. Perman came in and playedsome nice shots for his 18 before hegot castled by a straight one after 3wides. McKinnstry and Waqer put on68 for the 3rd wicket beforeMcKinnstry got bowled by a full toss, bringing Byrne hobbling to the wicketa result of the keeper trying to trap aDell full toss in the first inningsinstead of using the gloves. However, it was all Alfas needed andbetween Waqer and Byrne, they hitthe remaining 40 needed to see thegame out, Byrne nearly winning thegame with a 6 but the ball wasadjudged to have cleared the fencerather than, as Waqer repeatedlystated, going through it but two ballslater Byrne hit a 4 to close off thematch and send Alfas home with fullpoints from the long trip

Lingmerth carded a finalround three-under 69 tofinish on 15-under for thetournament, before edgingRose at the third playoffhole.

The Swede had held thesecond round lead beforeslipping off the pace onSaturday as Rose carvedout a three-shot thirdround lead. But he surgedback into contention onSunday, and had achance to potentially avoida playoff, but failed to sinka nine-foot birdie putt onthe last.

Rose meanwhile wouldhave considered himself

fortunate to be able to setup a playoff after a testinground of 72 culminated inhis approach shot at the18th hitting a fan on thehead. However, theEnglishman, who won atMuirfield Village in 2010,ensured he would remainin contention by producingan unbelievable recoverywith a wedge which rolledjust two feet wide of thecup and allowed him tosave par.

The International Cycling Union(UCI) has confirmed that thebike Sir Bradley Wiggins used tobreak the UCI Hour Record onSunday was legal, quashingclaims from the coach of formerrecord-holder Alex Dowsett thatit did not meet regulations.

Steve Collins, who coachedDowsett to the previous recordof 52.937km, said the handlebardid not meet the criteria for per-mitted equipment in recordattempts.

He told the BBC: “One of the sadbits about it was that Bradley's

bike wasn't in production. Forattempts like that it should all beproduction available so you canbuy it off the shelf. You can't get3D-printed handlebars mouldedto your own arms to make it eas-ier for your own attempt.”

However, in a statement onTuesday, the UCI, which offici-ates over the hour record, con-firmed: “Bradley Wiggins’ bikeand equipment were thoroughlyassessed by UCI officials beforeand after the UCI Hour Recordattempt and were judged to befully compliant with UCIRegulations.”

WICKEDWIGGINSSir Bradley Wiggins has set a new worldrecord for distance covered in one hour -described as cycling's "Holy Grail".

The four-time Olympic champion completedthe feat with minutes to spare, earning ahuge roar at the Lee Valley VeloPark inLondon.

He eventually clocked 54.526km in the hour- demolishing the previous record of52.937km set by fellow Briton Alex Dowsettlast month.

The 34-year-old had enough strength toraise his bike above his head in celebration.

The event, which was screened live on SkySports, sold out in just seven minutes.A raucous crowd cheered on their manthroughout the hour - but Wiggins admittedafterwards he could not hear them.

"It's so difficult to block the noise out," hesaid. "They put a playlist of music togetherthat I had to okay and I couldn't hear any-thing.

"I thank everyone for coming and puttingtheir hands in their pocket."Ahead of the bid, Sir Bradley described therecord as a "Holy Grail for cyclists" .
