Dear Parents/Carers,
Already it has been a wonderful week at Orange Public School commencing with the
arrival of our full kindergarten group on Monday and boy didn’t they look excited. The
tears had gone and with so many new friends to play with the children looked like they
were ready to charge. We have been so delighted with the transition of the children into
the school over the last week and feel the process of having smaller numbers attend over
the first three days really makes it so much easier for children to feel comfortable in their
new surroundings. Our new parents also have made this process work, with tremendous
support of their children and the school and we sincerely thank each mum and dad.
We had a tremendous start to the year with all children enjoying their new classes and
jumping straight back into work. The school was delighted with the strong attendance at
the welcome BBQ and information evening on Thursday with the P&C selling out to the
last steak sandwich right at the finish of the evening. It is always lovely to have our
families come together and have the opportunity to mingle with each other and the OPS
staff and just enjoy a chat and catch up.
Our school is offering our first evening of Parent Teacher interviews tonight. Bookings for
the interviews can be made online through
http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/book with the Event code ka8dp and if you are
unable to make the scheduled time cycle tonight there is an additional evening next
Wednesday 12th February. These meetings are very beneficial for the school and parents
as it gives an opportunity for families to discuss their children with the class teacher and
highlight factors that may impact them. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you
are unable to attend either night and you wish to have a chance to speak with the class
teacher, the school will endeavour to organise a time during the term.
In what would have to be one of our hottest weeks just past, I would like to remind
parents to ensure their child has sunscreen on each day, a water bottle and their school
hat. We encourage the children to play safe in the heat and have lots of breaks and seek
shade. We appreciate parents provision of the items mentioned to assist in safe play.
On Monday, our school made a huge splash with the running of the OPS swimming carnival and again some great
results were seen throughout the day. OPS has a strong tradition of swimming and without a doubt the children have
been working hard in the pool over the summer. Kingston Johnston is one young swimmer who really shone on the
day winning all events and taking out the boys senior champion. He also broke 3 records being the 200 Medley,
50 metre Freestyle and 50 metre Backstroke. Other great swims include Georgina Clunas, Emily
Swift, Lewis Kiely and Poppy Kay. The atmosphere at the carnival was electric throughout the
day. Our new sports captains lead their house teams in cheering and what a job they did in
their first official role of the year. The noise was deafening at times with all swimmers being
inspired by their teammates. Well done captains. I would like to thank the staff on the day for
their efforts in running a very successful carnival and commend all children for also showing
what great kids we have at OPS. Many may be wondering how the teacher/parent race finished
up, but due to the decision to allow a free swim the race was put back to 2021 in what was a
relief for many staff members.
On Monday 3rd February the OPS P&C held their first meeting of 2020. It was great to see the incredibly strong turnout
of parents and community members and I would like to commend the whole gathering for their show of support to
the school and our children. The evening went quickly with discussion based around school projects being undertaken
during the year including the introduction of new hydration stations at both the infants and primary. The development
of the new sandpit area in the primary was also discussed followed by an update on the capital works that have
occurred at the school over the holidays. Each classroom in the school has new carpet and fresh paint in many. I would
encourage all parents to feel welcome to come along to the P&C meetings as it is a very easy group to be involved in
which do great work for the school, community and most importantly your children.
Over the next few weeks the team sports will begin to ramp up for Winter. As such our school will be promoting many
club sign on dates and hope everyone will be able to utilise this information to choose a sport for their child. Please
remember the government are still offering the Active Kids Voucher which provides $100 towards club costs.
Information can be found by searching for Active Kids Voucher at sevice.nsw.gov.au .
A great opportunity has presented to children in Orange to become involved in swimming, which would have to be
one of the best fitness and personal development sports for all children. The Orange Aquatic Club are now offering
placement in their swimming squads with contact available through [email protected]
Over the holidays several families and children from Orange Public School were impacted by the coastal fires in
relation to holiday plans. In support of the communities that were damaged by the fires, many families have given
generously towards fundraising efforts in a number of forms. One such student was Matilda Thornton who
participated in a Bushfire Relief Half Marathon running event on the 19th of January. The event was held at locations
across the country and raised over $1,000,000. What makes the effort all the more remarkable is that Matilda is only 8
years old having just completed year 2. Great effort Tilly, you have made OPS very proud.
Enjoy the week.

ORC Staff Chamber Music Concerts - March 20th, June 26th, September 25th, November
20th Throughout 2019, the ORC staff presented 4 inspiring and high-quality chamber music performances. Every
instrument group was represented and a large variety of styles were embraced by performers and audiences alike,
showcasing the talent and breadth of the ORC staff. Parts of the same concerts were also brought for free into
schools, mixed with demonstrations and interactions to inspire and foster a love of music within school students.
In 2020, the ORC staff continue this trend, hoping to visit more schools in the weeks surrounding each concert and
deliver high quality music incursions. Please get in touch if you think your school might be able to host a
performance!

Cuban musicians from the 70s and 80s. A workshop accompanies the performance, directed towards people with
little or no experience of Cuban music and dance styles. The workshops will build each style from the rhythmic
patterns up-adding bass, piano, woodwind and brass step by step.
Musica Viva In-Schools programs for 2020 Musica Viva sends out 2 ensembles to Orange once again in 2020, with broad dates set out below:
Da Vinci's Apprentice (Every child can be an inventor!) - 25th May - 5th June, 15th - 19th June Roberta, a talented girl living in 16th century Italy, dreams of becoming an apprentice to the greatest inventor
of all, Leonardo da Vinci. Along the way, she meets a trio of musicians equipped with the weird and wonderful
instruments of their time. With jazz-infused music by Australian composer Sally Greenaway and script by writers
Catherine Prosser and Paul Bissett, Da Vinci’s Apprentice encourages students to hear the music in the world
around them, and inspires them to make their dreams a reality.

Dr Stovepipe (Gypsy swing, Ragtime & Hot Jazz) - 19th October - 5th November Down a dusty road from the 1930s comes Doctor Stovepipe, a rollicking, old-time ensemble of guitar, bass,
fiddle and sweet vocal harmonies. Each appointment is a swinging dose of fun, and a demonstration of how
songs evolve and change over time, as they are passed on from one musician to the next. Students learn how
the simplest sounds and stories can be turned into toe-tapping tunes and can even write their own lyrics for
Doctor Stovepipe to perform in the show.
