LETTER FROM REV ALISTAIR ANQUETIL
Dear Friends,
It is the end of August, which means that the plane trees have begun to
flower. This is followed by a short pollen-release of approximately six
weeks during the season of Spring. If you live in Johannesburg and have
started sneezing (as I have) in the last few days, it may well be in
anticipation of the afore mentioned.
At the Session meeting on the 25th of August, it was agreed that Sunday
Services in the Church will recommence on the 4th of October. The weeks
in between now and then are being used to determine the details
surrounding the reopening of the Sanctuary, with the wellbeing of all who
enter through our doors, remaining a top priority.
There is a long list of government gazetted regulations
relating to services of worship. These, together with our own
local guidelines, will be included in next week’s newsletter
and will provide a better platform for each individual to
decide when and how they might return to 45 Lurgan
Road. Also included in next week’s correspondence will be a
survey that we are asking you to complete and submit. Your
voice is valued and will form an important part of how we
navigate the weeks and months ahead.
Please note (especially for those who have every reason to
avoid public gatherings at all costs) that our online services,
which have also allowed those living in other parts of the
country and around the world to connect more meaningfully
with St Columba’s, will be continuing for the foreseeable
future.
In addition to the accompanying allergies, may the beauty
and new life that characterises this time of year, also be to us,
a sign of deeper things, in Christ’s name.
Affectionately yours,
Alistair
It may only be the two of us…mom and son, but come between us and you have an army!
In fact, St Columba’s is our family. The church and the people have been part of our lives for the past 15 years. We were first impacted by the love and concern from St Columba’s when Chunky conducted my nephew’s funeral – he was just 35 when he died of a heart attack. Chunky was so compassionate and real. And since that day, this has been our home. And then my husband died tragically 9 years ago, and again my church family were there to support and love us.
In my business environment I am known as Bridget von Holdt. My career is my passion - public relations and reputation management. Crisis and reputation management are my specific skills. Brandon, who turns 19 in September, has gravitated towards the sea and is in his first year of a Bachelor of Business Science at UCT. (I might add, that I am convinced that Brandon is studying a Bachelor of Surfing! as right through the cold Cape Town winter, Brandon has been surfing the icy seas across the Cape coast.) He is sports mad and loves the outdoors. But right now, SURFING takes #1 position.
My life revolves around my son, my family, my friends and living life purposefully. A game of golf, a trip to the bush, a walk along the beach or a hike in nature are the little rewards for hard work and destressing the mind and soul.
St Columbus is at the heart of our family life. Brandon was a regular member of the Sunday School programme from a very young age. He then became the standard “skivvy” or runner at the Christmas market, at the Potjiekos Competition and Halloween. His highlights being his opportunity to drive the golf cart, being on the two-way radio and selling cool drinks in the Mobi Can. I have been part of Exco and Session and anything that the ministers want to throw at me.
Lockdown was a time to reflect, revise and renew in every way. We managed to keep ourselves busy with a host of activities. Brandon convinced me subscribe to Netflix, and we would enjoy watching a good movie after dinner. In celebration of the impact of my late husband’s life, he hosted a formal dinner party for two and Brandon cooked his famous Butter Chicken.
In the words of Brandon: “I have learnt to appreciate the company of friends and family far more. I miss social interactions and going out with my friends. However, the biggest lesson I learnt was the power of self-reflection. Reflecting on the relationships I had and If they were meaningful.
I wanted to follow as a man, finding balance in my life again. I also learnt the damaging effects of mental illness and the true reality of what it can do to people and how important it is to check up on those whom you love and care for. Lockdown also made me realise the importance of self-education on matters of social inequalities and injustice happening across the world.
In addition, realising the position of privilege that I have and how I can use that position to empower and change the attitudes of those around you for the better. If you did not learn or realise anything, then lockdown was a proper waste of time.”
We enjoyed cooking many dinners together, built puzzles, practiced yoga and were actively exercising. Brandon’s new skill was videography and he created a documentary for Home of Hope. We quickly slipped into a new way of working from home, constantly online and on duty as well as a new way of learning online. The biggest take out - we were together and safe and healthy.
With love, your friends at St Columba's
