The concept of covenant is rooted in the promisesof love that we make to one another - not to acreed, not to a divine being, but to the people whowalk beside us on a spiritual path. The prophetAmos asked "Can two walk together except theybe agreed?" Liberal religion answers "no,"because humans over time are rarely in totalagreement. No Degrees of Separation I've been reminded recently, and reminded yet again, thatthere really are no degreesof separation between humanbeings. A congregant reachedout in the anguish of her griefand over the shooting death inChicago of a co-worker's 18-year-old brother. My son,Kevin, is deeply affected bythe beheading in Syria of journalist James Foley, who was his colleague at the news agencyGlobalpost. Read More

Evolutionary psychologists by and large acceptthe idea that we human beings are adapted to theforaging societies of the Pleistocene but not toany of the environments we have inhabited sincethe origin of agriculture 10,000 years ago. Afamiliar claim is that ten thousand years is notenough time for evolution to occur. Marlene Zuk's

book "Paleofantasies" amasses a large amount ofevidence to dispute this. Her claim is thatevolution can occur in a few generations;; wecarry many adaptations to recent phenomena likeeating wheat or resisting smallpox. All of theseoccurred in more recent centuries. Concurringthemes are outlined as well in Matt Ridley's veryrecent book "A Troublesome Inheritance."Discussion Leaders: Bill Irons and Scot Campbell

Sunday, September 28, 9:30am"Take the Word 'Church' out of the

Church Name?" Does the "Unitarian Church of Evanston" need aname change? The word 'church' reflectsChristian thought and we are not necessarilyso. In addition, there are some people fromJewish and other faith traditions who seem to beturned off by the word 'church' in our presentname. Thirdly, since we now are part of UUA- Unitarian Universalist Association - the nameshould so state. I believe the perfect solutionwould be "Unitarian-Universalists of Evanston."This idea comes from "Unitarian-Universalists ofClearwater," Florida. They changed their nameyears ago. Discussion Leader: Dave Woods

Sunday, October 5, 9:30am"Risk Compensation"

Do people take greater risks if safety measuresare in place? An observed effect of humanbehavior is that people tend to adjust theirbehavior in response to the perceived level ofrisk, behaving less cautiously where they feelmore protected. Thus, seatbelts, bicycle helmets, antilock brakes, safer skydiving gear and freecondoms have often failed to achieve their goalsof lowering accident rates or contracting HIV. Safety measures in sports often just mean arougher game, without a significant reduction ininjuries. After a data review, we will discuss ifsafety interventions intended to reduce risk arelikely to accomplish this purpose. DiscussionLeader: Scot Campbell
