4th Grade News Important Dates Character Word: Responsibility We have had the best week! This group of kids is just amazing. They are motivated, compassionate and ready to learn. Thank you for sharing them with me! This week was a huge success. I am already seeing such amazing growth as students are moving from a score of 1, unable to complete the task, to a score of 3 consistent- ly able to meet the standard independently. We have been working hard to master skills, therefore you haven’t seen much come home in the form of worksheets as much of what we are doing is hands-on. This week our math focus was on prime vs. composite numbers as well as factors and multiples. We will continue working in this area next week. We are also focusing on deepening our understanding of place value. Students are bringing home their multi- plication sheets today. If they are unable to meet the expectation of 100 in five minutes, please encourage them to practice nightly until this is mastered. We’ve been reading a book called UpChuck and the Rotten Willy. I am so proud of the real world connections the kids are making. We’ve been talking a lot about, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, and how that ties to the book we’re reading. I’ve been amazed at their depth of thinking. Make sure that when you’re reading at home they are showing you their depth of thinking as well. This week I would like for students to record their thoughts, at least once, about the book they are reading at home. This should be recorded on the bottom part of their Reading Minutes. There is an example on the back of this newsletter. MAP Data is in your child’s backpack today. We will be setting interventions up for students who are struggling in math or reading. I am available for tutoring at 8:10 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We will work together to raise comprehension in all areas. We will continue working with soil next week to wrap up our standard. We are still in need of a large zip lock baggie of clay. This could come from your yard or from the store. We just need it for some experiments. We will be com- paring characteristics of the types of soil as well as seeing which soil best sup- ports plant life. 9/1—No School 9/9 Picture Day 9/29—Grandparent’s Day 10/10—1/2 Day Week of 10/13— Parent/Teacher Conferences 10/17—No School

Character Word: Responsibility

We have had the best week! This group of kids is just amazing. They are motivated,

compassionate and ready to learn. Thank you for sharing them with me!

This week was a huge success. I am already seeing such amazing growth as students

are moving from a score of 1, unable to complete the task, to a score of 3 consistent-

ly able to meet the standard independently. We have been working hard to master

skills, therefore you haven’t seen much come home in the form of worksheets as

much of what we are doing is hands-on.

This week our math focus was on prime vs. composite numbers as well as factors and

multiples. We will continue working in this area next week. We are also focusing on

deepening our understanding of place value. Students are bringing home their multi-

plication sheets today. If they are unable to meet the expectation of 100 in five

minutes, please encourage them to practice nightly until this is mastered.

We’ve been reading a book called UpChuck and the Rotten Willy. I am so proud of the

real world connections the kids are making. We’ve been talking a lot about, “Don’t

judge a book by it’s cover”, and how that ties to the book we’re reading. I’ve been

amazed at their depth of thinking. Make sure that when you’re reading at home they

are showing you their depth of thinking as well. This week I would like for students

to record their thoughts, at least once, about the book they are reading at home.

This should be recorded on the bottom part of their Reading Minutes. There is an

example on the back of this newsletter.

MAP Data is in your child’s backpack today. We will be setting interventions up for

students who are struggling in math or reading. I am available for tutoring at

8:10 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We will work together to

raise comprehension in all areas.

We will continue working with soil next week to wrap up our standard. We are

still in need of a large zip lock baggie of clay. This could come from your

yard or from the store. We just need it for some experiments. We will be com-

paring characteristics of the types of soil as well as seeing which soil best sup-

ports plant life.

Student Response:

This week I found out that my prediction is coming true because Rotten Willy

and UpChuck are becoming friends. I can tell they are building a relationship

because UpChuck is asking Willy all kinds of questions about college, and Willy

is taking the time to share with him. I think this friendship will continue to

grow. I am also wondering if something is going to happen to Tom. The book

makes me wonder this because it keeps referring to the fact that Tom and

UpChuck will be friends FOREVER… I am really enjoying this book. It is funny

and the author does a good job of helping me see the story in my head. I can’t

wait to find out what happens next!
