4th Grade News Important Dates Character Word: Responsibility What a great week! We have been loving this weather! Recess has been awesome this week. This is truly a great group of kids and I love how willing they are to share their thoughts. We are continuing to do team-building activities to create family-like at- mosphere inside our classroom. Thank you for all your support as we started the  year. We are off and rolling! We are working hard on understanding factors, multiples, multi-step word problems and review multiplication skills. If your child is struggling with his or her math facts I recommend ten minutes of nightly practice until they are fluent. Our fourth grade math requires that foundational support. In reading we are working on using context clues to discover the meanings of un- known words. We are c ontinuing to work on making inferences. That means “reading between the lines.” Students are doing great at using clues the author gives to make their own decisions about what is happening. We finished our book UpChuck and the Rotten Willy. The kids have really loved it. I hope they’ve come home talking about it! In social studies we are learning all about the state of Missouri. Next week you will see a map come home with important cities, rivers and regions labeled on it. This is our study guide for the end of next week. We will make our salt dough maps next week as we just didn’t have time this week. The kids always love that project and I will post pictures of it on our class w ebsite. (elindsey4.blogspot.com) Mid-Quarter grade checks come home on Monday. I was proud of how the students showed ownership of their scores. Please remember that there is no way to transfer a 1, 2 or 3 to represent a letter grade. We are moving to a new grading scale that provides much better data for all of us. Think of it this way, if your child came home with a B or a C on their report card what did it show you? Could you see the exact areas of weakness that was holding them back? The new standard based grading provides that specific data so that we can all see exactly what we need to continue working on. We have changed student portfolios and they will now be a part of their take home binders. Please look through the binder each Friday as that is when I will send home graded work. If at all possible, I’d like the papers to stay in their binder as we work through the year so that we can all see their progress and growth. Character Word: Responsibility

What a great week! We have been loving this weather! Recess has been awesome this

week. This is truly a great group of kids and I love how willing they are to share their

thoughts. We are continuing to do team-building activities to create family-like at-

mosphere inside our classroom. Thank you for all your support as we started the

year. We are off and rolling!

We are working hard on understanding factors, multiples, multi-step word problems

and review multiplication skills. If your child is struggling with his or her math facts

I recommend ten minutes of nightly practice until they are fluent. Our fourth grade

math requires that foundational support.

In reading we are working on using context clues to discover the meanings of un-

known words. We are continuing to work on making inferences. That means “reading

between the lines.” Students are doing great at using clues the author gives to make

their own decisions about what is happening. We finished our book UpChuck and the

Rotten Willy. The kids have really loved it. I hope they’ve come home talking about it!

In social studies we are learning all about the state of Missouri. Next week you will

see a map come home with important cities, rivers and regions labeled on it. This is

our study guide for the end of next week. We will make our salt dough maps next

week as we just didn’t have time this week. The kids always love that project and I

will post pictures of it on our class website. (elindsey4.blogspot.com)

Mid-Quarter grade checks come home on Monday. I was proud of how the students

showed ownership of their scores. Please remember that there is no way to transfer

a 1, 2 or 3 to represent a letter grade. We are moving to a new grading scale

that provides much better data for all of us. Think of it this way, if your child

came home with a B or a C on their report card what did it show you? Could you

see the exact areas of weakness that was holding them back? The new standard

based grading provides that specific data so that we can all see exactly what we

need to continue working on. We have changed student portfolios and they will

now be a part of their take home binders. Please look through the binder each

Friday as that is when I will send home graded work. If at all possible, I’d like

the papers to stay in their binder as we work through the year so that we can all see

their progress and growth. Thanks for all you do!

Student Response:

This week I found out that my prediction is coming true because Rotten Willy

and UpChuck are becoming friends. I can tell they are building a relationship

because UpChuck is asking Willy all kinds of questions about college, and Willyis taking the time to share with him. I think this friendship will continue to

grow. I am also wondering if something is going to happen to Tom. The book

makes me wonder this because it keeps referring to the fact that Tom and

UpChuck will be friends FOREVER… I am really enjoying this book. It is funny

and the author does a good job of helping me see the story in my head. I can’t

wait to find out what happens next!
