From the Principal…

ENROLLING NOW FOR KINDERGARTEN Our school is piloting an online enrolment application procedure in response to requests from parents to streamline this process. The Department of Education having established the program in Western Sydney were looking to expand to other areas. Our school was more than happy to be part of the pilot and our administrative staff have been trained in the use of the software. Parents are requested to use the online application procedure by going to our school website www.umina-p.schools.nsw.edu.au > enrolment > apply for enrolment online

If you do not live within our school zone you will be informed of this very early in the application. Should this occur parents may come to the school and request an ‘out of zone’ application. These will be considered by the Out of Zone Enrolment Committee in line with current Department Policy.

WHEN WILL THE CHILDREN BE BACK AT SCHOOL FULLTIME? Our school is complying fully with the Department Guidelines in this matter and I would like to thank families for supporting the gradual return to school. Please stick to the schedule for this week. All students may return to school full time next week. This means that children are either:

at school;

at home because they are currently unwell; or

have an ongoing medical condition such as supressed immune systems or are undergoing treatment like chemotherapy.

The school will no longer be operating the drive through at Club Umina and units of work will no longer be provided. Teachers will be planning face for face lessons only. Work completed during the time the children were not at school full time will be marked by their teachers and returned to the children when they attend school.

If your children are not well they should not come to school.

Please send your children to school in full school uniform each day. They will still require a drink bottle and their own pens, pencils etc. and a hat to play on the oval areas. All textbooks should be returned to school on Monday when the children return to school. Guidelines stress the need for parents to remain off the school site. The children have demonstrated that they can get to the morning assembly areas very well. On Monday morning they will line up in their normal assembly areas.

SCHOOL CANTEEN OPERATING EVERYDAY NOW Our canteen is open for business and I would like to encourage parents to use this service. Children need to bring in their order written on a piece of paper accompanied by their money in a plastic sealed bag. There has been a slight modification to the menu as Mrs Elliott is currently managing the canteen alone.

SCHOOL MUSICAL POSTPONED In these unprecedented times a difficult decision has been made that there will be no school musicals this year. This is very disappointing for staff and students alike. Hopefully, we can prepare for a K-2 Musical and a Year 3-6 Musical in 2021. Teachers are currently looking into a project for the Year 6 actors.

REPORTING – SEMESTER 1 These reports will be sent home in week 1 Term 3 (Friday 24 July). This will be a simplified report about students’ learning in Semester 1. Our existing templates will be modified and grading A-E is not a requirement for Semester 1 reporting this year.

YEAR 5 OPPORTUNITY CLASS The placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, will be delayed until later in the year. As a result, applications will not open in April 2020 as previously advised. This delay is in response to the social distancing measures that are currently in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community.

As part of the application process, eligible students are required to sit a test in a supervised environment. Social distancing guidelines currently in place make it difficult to implement a large-scale assessment at this time. The new date for the placement test is Wednesday 21 July 2020. The opportunity class placement will still go ahead in 2020 however, the process for that, including the timeline, will look a little different this year. We intend to ensure Year 5 students are placed in opportunity classes for 2021 with minimal disruption to schools and families.

The department continues to work closely with NSW Health to ensure people have access to the latest advice on how to keep staff, students and the community safe. Revised dates for applications, tests and process changes will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

We encourage parents and carers to continue to monitor the department’s website to remain up to date with information relating to Opportunity Classes. We will provide information to Year 4

students as it becomes available.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Our school photographer has advised that they will be here in September to take the children’s photos. “This year, the format for school photos will change to a composite style. Each student will be photographed individually, with the group created digitally as a composite. This will eliminate the need for students to be grouped together in close contact with either themselves, or our staff.”

ADDITIONAL PROTOCOLS INCLUDE:

Students will move in and out of the portrait studio area individually.

The area will be set up in such a way as to ensure that each individual student will maintain the recommended social distancing guidelines of 1.5m from other students and the photographer.

MSP Photography staff will provide instructions to each class upon entry to the photography area.

Hygiene and cleaning guidelines used by MSP Photography staff are in accordance with information distributed by the relevant Health Authorities.

Before the Corona Virus changed everybody's lives, Year 2 had planned to hold their annual Class Museum exhibition, where the children bring in items from the past.

In previous years, we have opened our museum for only an hour, so not all classes were able to see the items. This year we had planned on having the museum in the hall, for 2 hours so that all the Umina Beach students could enjoy the display. 2B went ahead with our Class Museum, except we shared the items on our Class Dojo page. These are the items that 2B shared. Enjoy!

STUDENT SURVEY INFORMATION The Tell Them From Me student survey (Term 2, 2020)

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey last year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 25 - 29 May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 22 May. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
