But there was also a tax: “This is what they shall give…half of a shekel” (Shemot 30:13). Rav Shlomoh Yosef Zevin highlights the uniqueness of this tax. Both flat and progressive taxes share a common overall approach. They require more from those with means, and less from those without. The tax in our parsha, though, is unlike either of these. It obligated the same exact dollar amount from every individual: “The wealthy shall not increase and the destitute shall not decrease from the half-shekel” (ibid., v. 15). Presumably, this would undercut the fundraising potential of the tax. Why was it important to G-d to institute such a counterintuitive procedure? Rav Zevin suggests that, although we may have varying talents, abilities, and resources to offer in the service of G-d, not one of us has a greater portion of innate sanctity than any other. Each of us has an equal hand in the mishkan. Of course, this is true on a metaphysical level. G- d knows that His image is equal in each and every one of us. But it must be true to us as well. Esther understood that the Jews’ salvation from the maleficence of Haman would flourish out of a sense of deep unity, telling Mordechai, “Go gather together all the Jews” (Esther 4:16). Only together could they defend themselves against their foes: “They assembled together and stood up for the lives” (ibid., 9:16). Certainly, we face mighty challenges, ranging from violent hostility and political antagonism to the common hurdles of nation-building and spiritual growth. No matter the obstacle, though, we are assured of G-d’s help if we start with a true sense of ahavat Yisrael. Let the mishkan remind us of the equal importance of every individual, and let our unity arouse the ultimate salvation. SHUL DECORUM REMINDER

At YIEB we encourage talking to everyone:

HASHEM during Davening. FRIENDS during Kiddush.

An Equal Hand in the Mishkan Rabbi Effy Unterman

The mishkan was subsidized in two ways. Of

course, open donations flooded in. But there was

also a tax: “This is what they shall give…half of a

shekel” (Shemot 30:13).

Rav Shlomoh Yosef Zevin highlights the

uniqueness of this tax. Both flat and progressive

taxes share a common overall approach. They

require more from those with means, and less from

those without. The tax in our parsha, though, is

unlike either of these. It obligated the same exact

dollar amount from every individual: “The wealthy

shall not increase and the destitute shall not

decrease from the half-shekel” (ibid., v. 15).

Presumably, this would undercut the fundraising

potential of the tax. Why was it important to G-d to

institute such a counterintuitive procedure?

Rav Zevin suggests that, although we may have

varying talents, abilities, and resources to offer in the

service of G-d, not one of us has a greater portion of

innate sanctity than any other. Each of us has an

equal hand in the mishkan.

Of course, this is true on a metaphysical level. G-

d knows that His image is equal in each and every

one of us. But it must be true to us as well. Esther

understood that the Jews’ salvation from the

maleficence of Haman would flourish out of a sense

of deep unity, telling Mordechai, “Go gather together

all the Jews” (Esther 4:16). Only together could they

defend themselves against their foes: “They

assembled together and stood up for the lives” (ibid.,

9:16).

Certainly, we face mighty challenges, ranging

from violent hostility and political antagonism to the

common hurdles of nation-building and spiritual

growth. No matter the obstacle, though, we are

assured of G-d’s help if we start with a true sense of

ahavat Yisrael. Let the mishkan remind us of the

equal importance of every individual, and let our unity

arouse the ultimate salvation.

Shabbat Shalom!
