Nov. 1, 2008, Stanford, Calif.

Toby Gerhart rushed for a game-high 132 yards and four touchdowns as Stanford snapped a two-game skid to Washington State with a 58-0 victory over the Cougars. Freshman quarterback J.T. Levenseller saw the first action of his career, completing two of four passes for 20 yards. His first completion went to Tony Thompson, son of legendary Cougar Jack Thompson. The elder Thompson completed 97 passes to J.T.’s dad, Cougar assistant coach Mike Levenseller, when the two were teammates in the 1970s.

TARDY RUSHING FOR A FIRST: Redshirt senior running back Dwight Tardy is looking to become the first known running back in school history to lead the Cougars in rushing in four consecutive seasons. Dating as far back as 1942, only three backs have led WSU in rushing in three consecutive seasons: Tardy (2006-08), Shaumbe Wright-Fair (1990-92) and Tim Harris (1980-82).

FIRST PLACE ON THE LINE: The match-up between WSU and Stanford marks the first game of 2009 featuring two Pac-10 schools, and is the only intra-conference game in the first two weeks of the season for the Pac-10. Thus, the winner of WSU-Stanford will hold sole possession of first place for the first two weeks of 2009, and a share of the conference lead through at least week three, when USC faces Washington.

WSU-FSN EXTEND AGREEMENT: FSN North-west and Washington State University have an-nounced an eight-year extension of their existing rights agreement that provides continued expo-sure for Cougar Athletics throughout the North-west through the 2016-17 academic year. FSN will retain the exclusive rights to all available local events and ancillary programming. In addition to the network’s commitment to deliver live events for WSU football and basketball programs as well as Olympic sports, FSN will produce a 30-minute weekly show focusing on Cougar Athletics begin-ning this season. Cougars All-Access will provide fans a unique look at campus life for WSU’s stu-dent athletes, delivering more in-depth, personal, innovative and exciting coverage of the Cougars than ever before. FSN and the Pacific-10 Confer-ence have national agreements in place that run through 2011 for men’s football and 2012 for men’s basketball.

THOMPSON TO WEAR DAD’S NUMBER: Senior tight end Tony Thompson will be wearing a familiar number this season, one that his father wore more than 30 years ago. The younger Thompson will wear No. 14 this year, a tribute to his father, Jack, who wore the number from 1975-78. Follwoing Jack’s WSU playing career, the Cougars retired his No. 14, only the second football jersey to be retired (No. 7, Mel Hein) at WSU.

CORY MACKAY UPDATE: Washington State University redshirt freshman defensive end Cory Mackay continues his rehabilitation following a single-car accident on his way home from WSU last May. The accident left Mackay without the use of his lower body, though he continues to show improvement. His rehabilitation includes work at Pushing Boundaries, an exercise facility in his hometown of Redmond, Wash. Mackay is currenlty taking online classes through WSU and plans to return to campus in January to begin the winter semester.

WALDEN, WASHINGTON TO ENTER WSU HALL OF GAME: Legendary coach Jim Walden and All-American running back Duke Washington headline a class of seven that will be inducted into the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame, Sept. 18. Walden, led the Cougars from 1978 to 1986, highlighted by the 1981 Holiday Bowl, WSU’s first postseason appearacne since 1931. Washington starred for the Cougars from 1952-54, culminating with his selection to participate in the East-West Shrine Game.

STARTING FROM DAY ONE?: The Cougars have three true freshmen listed on the WSU two-deep - defensive end Travis Long, linebacker Darren Markle and wide receiver Gino Simone - and all three could get the nod to start the season-opener against the Cardinal. In the last 31 seasons, dating back to the formation of the Pacific-10 Conference in 1978, only 11 Cougar true freshman have started a season-opener. Only once has WSU started multiple true freshmen in a season-opening game (2004).

WSU TO RECOGNIZE STADIUM BUILDERS: During the Stanford game, Washington State University will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1979 stadium renovation by honoring the individuals involved in the project. The renovation expanded Martin Stadium from a capacity of 26,500 to 40,000 by lowering the playing field by 16 feet and extending the sloped seating areas closer to the field. It marked the first time a collegiate football stadium had been enlarged by digging down rather than building up. The Cougars christened the revamped Martin Stadium with a 17-14 win over UCLA, Oct. 13, 1979.

COUGARS EARN PRESEASON HONORS: The Washington State University football team was represented by six student-athletes on the Phil Steele Preseason All-Pacific-10 Conference Teams. Kenny Alfred, a center from Gig Harbor, Wash., garnered second team honors on the offensive line. The senior was also named to the Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. Alfred was joined on offense by junior wide receiver Jeshua Anderson and senior kick returner Chantz Staden, whom were each named to the fourth team. The Cougar defense boasted three individuals on the Preseason All-Pac-10 Fourth Team, including senior linebacker Andy Mattingly, junior safety Chima Nwachukwu and redshirt junior punter Reid Forrest.

VOTE FOR BUTCH: Washington State University mascot Butch T. Cougar has been announced as a member of the 2009 Capital One Mascot Challenge, and fans can vote to make Butch the Capital One Mascot Challenge Champion. Butch, one of 12 mascots selected to this year’s All-American Mascot Team, won the competition in 2006, and was also a member of the team in 2005.

Voting began Aug. 31, and will run through December. Fans can view Butch’s featured video now at www.capitalonebowl.com. Butch was selected for the team based on a highlight video made earlier this year. He was judged on his interaction with fans, originality, creativity and professionalism. In addition, his pedigree - awards earned in the last five years - played a role in his selection. WSU encourages fans to bookmark www.capitalonebowl.com starting Aug. 31, so they will remember to vote for Butch as many times as possible. Butch’s fans can vote multiple times per day, and Capital One does not collect names, addresses, or email addresses from anyone who casts votes.

Paul Wulff enters his second season on the Cougar sideline after being named Washington’s State’s 31st head coach, Dec. 10, 2007. With his appointment Wulff became the first WSU football letterwinner and graduate to lead the Cougars since Phil Sarboe served as head coach from 1945-49. A 1990 graduate of WSU and a four-year letterwinner, Wulff’s first season leading the Cougars proved difficult as the transition to a new head coach combined with numerous injuries resulting in a 2-11 record. WSU’s lone conference win came in dramatic fashion as the Cougars needed a last second field goal in regulation and two overtimes to defeat Washington 16-13 in the Apple Cup. Wulff spent the previous 15 seasons at Eastern Washington University, the final eight as head coach. There he amassed a record of 53-40. During his eight-year head coaching tenure Wulff was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year three times (2001, 2004, 2005) and led the Eagles into the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs three times in the last four years. He enters the 2009 campaign with a 55-51 career head coaching record in nine seasons. In 2007 he guided the Eagles to a 9-4 mark, including a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs, falling to two-time defending champion Appalachian State. It marked the seventh time in his eight years at Eastern that his teams posted winning records. Wulff began his coaching career at EWU in 1993 as a volunteer assistant working with the offensive line. He was named

offensive line/strength coach the following season and spent four years in the position before being promoted to offensive coordinator/offensive line/strength coach in 1998. Following two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator, Wulff was named head coach at Eastern prior to the 2000 season. He guided the Eagles to six straight winning seasons and seven overall during his eight-year tenure. Wulff’s 2005 team was loaded with experience, talent and leadership, featuring a group of seniors that included the Big Sky’s Offensive and Defensive MVP’s (Erik Meyer and Joey Cwik), and featured a trio of All-Americans (Meyer, Eric Kimble and Matt Alfred). Meyer would go on to win the Walter Payton Award as the best football player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Together, Meyer and Kimble rewrote Eastern’s record book as they combined for 27 school records and four Big Sky marks. Meyer set a FCS record for passing efficiency rating (166.47 with 10,261 yards, 84 touchdowns, just 17 interceptions and a .657 completion rate), while Kimble’s 46 touchdown grabs ranked second in FCS history behind the 50 of legendary Jerry Rice. The Eagles finished 7-5 and won the Big Sky title with a 5-2 record before losing to eventual national runner-up Northern Iowa in the first round of the playoffs. The 2004 season was also special, even after the Eagles opened the season 0-2. Eastern won eight of its next nine games - most by substantial margins - as the Eagles closed the year with a 51-44 overtime victory at Montana State to secure a place in the playoffs. Quarterback Erik Meyer was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. Senior offensive tackle Michael Roos joined Meyer, wide receiver Eric Kimble and guard Rocky Hanni as All-Americans, with Roos eventually being taken in the second round of the NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. In 2004, Wulff’s squad finished 9-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. The crowning glory came when the Eagles knocked off No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Southern Illinois in the first round. Statistically, the 2004 and 2005 teams were nearly identical with each finishing the year ranked fourth in FCS in total offense. In 2005 the Eagles averaged 477.8 yards per game, and were 14th in scoring (35.0). A year earlier the Eagles averaged 475.5 yards and 37.5 points per game to rank sixth. Wulff coached 21 players to 54 Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) All-America honors in his first seven years at the helm of the EWU program, and two more of his players were named to the Sports Network’s 2007 FCS All-America team at the conclusion of last year. Of the 21 players to earn All-America recognition, 15 have been offensive lineman. Additionally, Wulff has mentored 15 players who have earned 18 total CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honors and a total of 131 All-Big Sky Conference Academic team members. As a student-athlete and four-year starter at center for the Cougars from 1986-89, Wulff was an All-America honoree himself as a senior, earning honorable mention accolades from The Sporting News. Wulff started at center under three different coaches after redshirting in 1985. He played for Jim Walden in 1986, Dennis Erickson from 1987-88 and Mike Price in 1989. He was also the starting center on WSU’s 1988 Aloha Bowl championship team. After a successful collegiate career Wulff had a brief pro career as a center after graduating from Washington State University in 1990. He signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets, but was released after injuring an ankle and a rib in the preseason. He played in spring 1991 with Raleigh-Durham of the World League, then played in spring 1992 with New York-New Jersey. A 1985 graduate of Davis High School in Davis, Calif., Wulff played for three different coaches while he was at WSU. He redshirted in 1985 and started four games at guard in 1986 under Jim Walden. Dennis Erickson directed the program in 1987 and 1988 with Wulff as his starting center both years. In 1988, the Cougars were victorious in the Aloha Bowl as Wulff earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference honors. Under Mike Price in 1989, Wulff earned second-team all-conference honors and was an honorable mention selection on The Sporting News All-America squad. He was also WSU’s long snapper during his stay there. Wulff was born Feb. 25, 1967, in Woodland, Calif. He and his wife Sherry have a 14-year-old daughter, Katie, and two sons, six-year-old Max and three-year-old Sam.
