Weekly Update
Friday 17th May 2019 Shefford Lower School is committed to promoting respect, equality and harmony. We expect
everyone who is part of, or who visits this school, to support this commitment both in the way they
act and in the words they use.
This month’s values are Co-operation and Unity.
Dear Family and Friends, Obviously, I am enjoying meeting you all in the sunshine much more than when I was holding an umbrella. What a lovely way to start each day. Do remember if your child is using sunglasses, to ensure they meet the CE standard which filters out harmful rays. It is worse to open the pupils to exposure with cosmetic sunglasses. We encourage shade and hydration, and water bottles really do need to be named. Sun creaming is the essential morning routine now that the rays are picking up. Outdoor play is fun and essential, and going out on the field is always very enjoyable. Thank you for your support with reporting the parking issues in School Lane, regarding cars parking on double yellow lines, turning and also mounting kerbs. It is dangerous and would prevent emergency access should we ever need it. We also have a limited number of disabled spaces, and a number of families with genuine need – these are for use by blue badge holders only. The play equipment in our playground is designed for school aged children, and is therefore unsafe for younger children to play on. We are only insured for its proper use, under our staff supervision. We respectfully ask that you do not allow children to use it at drop off and pick up times, and especially younger toddlers, even if you are nearby. Our Finer Diner children enjoyed their smartie table lunch with me last week. Today, the finest of our diners will be enjoying their lunch on the smartie table with Mr Wakefield, and the lovely kitchen staff are plating up the dishes like a real restaurant experience for those winners – Big thank you to our lovely lunchtime ladies. Children, keep up the good table manners, the sensible sitting and the wonderful politeness. You are a credit to our school. Yours sincerely, Pamela Finch Headteacher

Cancer Support. Well done Year 1!
Thank you!
We would like to say a big thank you to the PSA for another successful Family Bingo Evening last Friday

Warmer Weather
Now the weather is beginning to get warmer, please ensure your child has a named
water bottle in school and a sun hat. We recommend parents applying a once-a-day
sunscreen in the morning with at least a SPF 15 and a 4-star UVA protection. School
sun hats are available from the school office; fisherman or legionnaire style for £2.50.
Well done to Reubyn in Maple and Harry D in Oak who competed in a football tournament at the weekend
for Shefford Saints U7. They played 7 games at Stevenage FC Stadium and won them all, leading them to be
the tournament champions!
Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at
your local library, then read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge. There are re-
wards to collect along the way, and it’s FREE to take part! In Central Bedfordshire, the challenge begins
on Saturday 20th July and there are activities to join in at the libraries. After completing the basic 6 book
challenge, children are encouraged to continue reading and there is a family theatre ticket prize at each
library, for the child who reads the most books.
The Summer Reading Challenge website helps you keep track of your reading all year round: find new
books to read, take part in competitions and mini challenges, and play games. For Further information:

exchange these for new ones and add to our Immersive room collection. We thank you in advance.
Asda in Biggleswade are currently supporting our Immersive Room Fundraising with their Green
Token scheme through to Sunday 30th June. Anyone shopping at the local Asda store should ensure
they get their Green tokens and place them in the Shefford Lower School collection. If we collect
the most tokens out of the 3 causes we will automatically receive £500.00 towards our room. This is
a fantastic opportunity to support the school at no cost to yourselves.
Come and say ‘Hello’ to the school’s new pupil; the PSA Dino bank! Our red Dinosaur shaped belly
bank is in reception for any spare change. Children will love watching their pennies roll down it’s
neck into his tummy whilst helping us raise cash.
