The Human-Environment Regional Observatory(HERO) program is a unique undergraduate-graduate-faculty experience that engages in research onhuman-environment relationships in Massachusetts.HERO Fellows conduct hands-on research under thementorship of Clark University faculty. The researchconducted by HERO Fellows often leads to scholarlypublications, presentations at academic conferencesacross the USA, and awards and honors.

HERO Fellows analyze the causes and consequencesof global environmental changes at local scales infaculty-led research projects. Each Fellow is pairedwith a Clark faculty mentor and other researchers onthe HERO team. Fellows will learn how to use variousresearch methods such as GIS, remote sensing, geostatistical modeling, interviews and focus groups.

- Unique hands-on research experience working with graduate students and faculty- Opportunities for publications, presentations, honors, and awards- Stipend for 8 weeks of research, plus academic credit- Funding for attendance to present research at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) annual scholarly meeting

Based on a competitive application process, each yearthe HERO program selects a diverse group ofundergraduate students to be HERO Fellows. HEROvalues students who demonstrate energetic andinquisitive minds, and who are fearless when chartingnew intellectual territory. Previous course work inresearch methods (Geog 141 or equivalent), and humanor environmental geography — such as urban andpopulation studies, GIS, landscape ecology, land-useplanning, statistics and remote sensing — is helpful butnot required.

Applications can be found online at:clarku.edu/departments/hero/fellowship

WHAT IS HERO?

THERE IS NO SYLLABUS FORTHIS. IT’S NOT LIKE A TYPICALUNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHPROJECT, INVOLVING ARESEARCH PAPER, AND YOUSOLELY USE THE INTERNET, ORA LAB EXPERIMENT IN CLASS.THIS WAS LONGER AND MOREINTERACTIVE. WE’RE THERESEARCHERS. WE’RE THEONES GOING OUT ANDCOLLECTING THE DATA. WEMET WITH THE DCR [STATEDEPARTMENT OFCONSERVATION ANDRECREATION] AND THE WTI[WORCESTER TREEINITIATIVE].
