Products Sartorius presents:Innovative solutions for your processes

Here is a line-up of our product innovations – short, concise and informative.

January – March 2006

Diagram: ATEX-certified roller conveyor from Sartorius

The name says it all:New SYNUS™ checkweigher stands outthanks to its flexibility and precision

The new SYNUS™ checkweigher fromSartorius is particularly remarkable for itsflexibility and reliability. The name of thisnew product says it all: like the sine curvethat it is named for in German, SYNUS™not only has an aesthetic appearance, italso permits flexible, yet form-fit and friction locked connection to the conveyorsystem, in the required height and trans-port direction. This gives the equipmentoperator a high degree of flexibility forintegrating the checkweigher into the production line – and for future systemmodifications as well.

The design engineering of the cantileveredSYNUS™ weighing and transport systemmakes it easy to replace belts and weighingtables, thanks to the belt's quick-unlockmechanism and the flip-up, removabletransport system. With all the modularoptions presented by the three electronicssystems and 18 weighing systems (1, 2, 5,7 kg) in this series, the checkweigher canmeet just about any customer require-ments. What's more, all SYNUS™ modelsare equipped with the monolithic electro-magnetic force compensation (EMC) weigh cell, developed specially by Sartoriusfor dynamic checkweighers. Impressivefeatures include the combination of exceptional precision with extremely shortstabilization times, maximum stability andrugged, industry-grade construction (IPprotection rating: IP44; IP65 optional). The checkweigher is also optimized foreasy cleanability and top-level hygiene.

Competence for safetyATEX-certified roller conveyors from Sartorius

The spectrum of explosion-protectedweighing equipment from Sartorius for all hazardous areas has been steadilyexpanding for decades – from high-resolu-tion weighing technology (600,000 digits)to weigh cells and platforms to indicators. Now the broad range of weighing platformaccessories includes ATEX-certified rollerconveyors. With this new product,Sartorius accommodates a change in ATEXDirectives according to which non-elec-trical apparatus is now included among“systems requiring supervision.”

Sartorius AG offers stainless steel rollerconveyors for use in Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22.These are available for installation withplatforms that have weighing capacities of15, 60, 150 and 300 kg.

The new ATEX-certified roller conveyorsare assessed in accordance with theEN 13463-1 and –5 standards contingenton the potential source of ignition anddesignated for use in hazardous areas asfollows:

II 2GD c T4 135°C (the lower-case “c”stands for “constructional safety,” a typeof protection for non-electrical apparatus).

One possible source of ignition, for exam-ple, is static charge on a conveyor roller. To prevent this, the Sartorius ATEX-approved roller conveyor is equipped withan antistatic subassembly. The rotatingbrush is in contact with the shaft and thepipe. The brush conducts the static chargeaway from the roller, to the axle.

This roller conveyor gives operators of haz-ardous systems the option of using equip-ment that has already been certified foruse in hazardous areas, saving the operatorthe trouble and expense of conducting ahazard assessment. Working with theexplosion experts at Sartorius, systemoperators are always on the safe side.

Thanks to the typical sine curve, this weighing andtransport system enables flexible, yet form-fit and friction locked connection to the conveyor system,at the required height.

SYNUS™ is ideal for over/under checkweigh-ing, classification, monitoring the complete-ness of packages and, most important of all, average weight control of prepackages.Whether beverage cans, folding cardboardboxes, sealed bags, plastic bottles, tetra packsor other type of package, SYNUS™ can checkthem reliably with the highest possible preci-sion.

Moreover, all SYNUS™ models can be supple-mented with additional features. For example,a polycarbonate touch guard can be added, toprotect the weighing facility from inadvertentcontact and from drafts. The touch guard isparticularly recommended for use in verifiablesystems, or in applications that require a lowzone of indecision. Airblast nozzle ejectors orpushers can be installed on the outfeed belt at the factory as well. Another option is theintegration of control lines for operating cus-tomer-specific sorting devices.

For evaluation, too, the SYNUS™ family ofelectronics systems includes a broad range offeatures. Operation of SYNUS™ checkweighersis very easy for new users to learn. The option-al trend controller can be used for effectiveregulation of upstream filling systems, helpingto minimize rejects. The generous dimensionsof the on/off key on the front of the evalua-tion electronics unit complete the simplifiedoperating design and, at the same time, address important safety aspects.

All SYNUS™ models can be equipped with aneasy-to-access, IP65-compliant USB interfacefor digital data storage and processing with-out a network connection. Used with a com-mercially available USB stick, SYNUS™ enablesfast, easy and paper-free transfer of the datareport saved in its internal memory to anycomputer available on the market, for pro-cessing in any standard Web browser (e.g.,Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.) and inMicrosoft® Excel version 2003 or later.

The PR6202 Hygienic Load Cell fromSartorius redefines the standard for loadcells used in the food industry and inindustrial sectors that place similarly highrequirements on cleanability and reliabili-ty. It is the first load cell of its kind to meetthe strict EHEDG guidelines (EuropeanHygienic Engineering & Design Group), andthus offers a genuine alternative to solu-tions available so far.

Unfortunately, technical solutions avail-able to date offer optimal weighing func-tions, yet under the aspects of cleanabilityand accessibility for cleaning, they havebeen compromises at best. Sartorius recog-nized the need to overcome these short-comings. Together with leading users fromthe food industries and institutes, Sartoriusdesigned the first load cell that was consis-tently developed to meet the standardsand guidelines for hygienic design, and hasnow unveiled the PR6202 Hygienic LoadCell.

The PR6202 Hygienic Load Cell has beenengineered for the classic instrumentationof typical tank and hopper scales. Thesescales encompass all production, mixing, batching and storage containers as well asintermediate and final storage tanks, silosand hoppers, both for liquid and pasty substances as well as for pourable powderand granulate in large-scale productionand processing of foods, beverages andtobacco.

This load cell ideally covers the require-ments typically placed on weighing capaci-ty, and is available for the following loadlevels: 1 t, 2 t, 4 t, 6 t, 10 t, 25 t and 50 t.

To demonstrate the outstanding quality ofthe PR6202, Sartorius Hamburg draftednumerous, stringent in-house standardsthat exceed the requirements of the con-ventional IEC and German Industrial Stan-dards, DIN. For instance, the PR6202 notonly had to withstand leak testing lastingmore than 10,000 grueling hours underwater at a depth of 1.5 m, but also standup to the “punishment” of 100 hours ofvibration testing at 20 times the gravita-tional acceleration over a broad frequencyrange, without letting up on performance.

The keypad featuring large, easy-to-find keys on the SYNUS™ with TFT color touch screen provide moreoperating convenience.

The PR6202 was the first industrial load cell to havewon the IF Product Design Award 2006

Moreover, the PR6202 proved its rugged-ness by undergoing the rigors of additionaltests, such as a 56-day temperature fluc-tuation test, in which it was alternatelyexposed to changes in the entire rangefrom –40 to +95°C (-40 to +203°F), as wellas a load test involving two million loadchanges at the full nominal capacity.

To ensure the PR6202’s special suitabilityfor the food industry, its design and per-formance were assessed according to the“Hygienic Equipment Design Criteria” ofthe EHEDG Recommendation DocumentNo. 8 of 2004. Basically, these include therequirements of the international andEuropean Standards adopted by GermanIndustrial Standards, DIN EN 1672-2 of2005 and DIN EN ISO 14159 of 2004, aswell as the European Machinery Directive.

For this reason, the Chair of Process Engi-neering of Disperse Systems at the Techni-cal University of Munich, Weihenstephan,Germany, came to the conclusion in itsoverall certification assessment that thePR6202 conforms to the requirements ofthe EHEDG Recommendations for hygienicdesign.

The new LA ReferenceAccomplish all your weighing tasks proficiently – and keep your cool in the process

With regard to the input keys on a device, touch technology is certainly on the advanceand has been proven very useful in a numberof areas. However, when reliable initiation ofa function and input confirmation are essen-tial, one might think twice about replacingtime-tested technology with something newthat doesn’t provide the familiar positive clickaction. When a function is initiated on adevice, tactile confirmation is an importantcomponent of ergonomic operation of theunit. Especially in a world where reliability isparamount, such as in the analytical labora-tories of the pharmaceutical industry, noth-ing can be left to coincidence when it comesto the operation of a device.

At a time when awareness of reliability issuesis at its highest level and laboratory directorsare faced with far-reaching decisions whenselecting a new laboratory balance, it shouldbe the primary goal to always follow the “safe path.” Knowing what really matters is a motto that leads to success.

The new LA Reference series of balances fromSartorius embodies the technology for profi-ciency. It provides the basis for independenceand self-determination, but also affords theflexibility to make the right decisions when itcomes to implementing the requirements ofquality management systems at the highestlevel.

“Get what’s really important” – with this mission statement, the new LA Referenceseries defines its own identity. Clearly, itsfresh, new design is highly appealing topotential buyers. But the LA Reference alsoboasts other features that highlight its actualstrengths, such as absolute reliability, aruggedness that can withstand the rigors of daily laboratory use, and finally the highresolution with which weighing results arereproduced time after time. “Set it and forgetit, and it will work perfectly every time” –users couldn’t describe this trouble-free product any better.

Products

It's not always the case that new achievements in technology and their quick implemen-tation into products are actually beneficial to the user. Oftentimes user benefits that are implied through advertisements turn out to be completely virtual in practical, dailyroutine use in the laboratory. In fact, they can even be perceived as disadvantages if they fail to lighten the user’s workload. What use is there in presenting the world in theboldest colors, for example, if the contrast is dull and color differentiation insufficient? What if the actual task at hand, e.g., accurately reading the weight displayed on a high-resolution laboratory balance, cannot be accomplished as the No. 1 priority?

The built-in “cool” display technology makes analyticalbalances more impervious to installation and ambient conditions

The new LA Reference series of balances enables proficient weighing: absolute reliability, ruggedness and high resolution and accuracy with respect to the repeatability of the weighing results

Page 7: WEIGHAHEAD 17 - Sartorius · in Sartorius mass comparators CCE series – a new generation of mass comparators Taking the dreaded piecework out of weighing small parts

The Reference in the laboratory – all over the worldWith its updated design, the new Sartorius LA Reference balance can look back on acompletely successful past. Not only is it oneof the most widely used precision or analyti-cal balances in laboratories throughout theworld, but the extremely small number ofcustomer complaints or cases of downtimeassociated with this balance is also impres-sive. Here, the label “made in Germany” stillholds the same unrestricted meaning as it used to in earlier days. It’s not only the balance's “tangible quality” that providesconvincing evidence of its strengths, but alsothe high-quality materials used in its flawlesscraftsmanship, including its metal housingand, of course, its monolithic weigh cell technology. In addition, the virtually inde-structible bubble keys provide a “self-healing”effect. This is the level of quality that usershave come to appreciate in a Sartorius balance.

Always stay cool – especially when it comesto display technology As was first introduced on the semi-microand analytical models of the Sartorius MEseries of laboratory balances, cold displaytechnology is also featured on the new “LAReference.” Display technology that is cool inthe literal sense of the word makes the ana-lytical balance more impervious to the instal-lation and operating conditions because theinfluence of heat emanating from the display(radiation and convection from thermal dissi-pation loss) on the microclimate inside thedraft shield chamber can be markedlyreduced. “Shifting” temperature layers in thedraft shield and the associated interference in the readout can be avoided to the greatestextent possible. This is an advantage that can hardly be measured but that users of theespecially “stable” ME analytical and semi-microbalances have become accustomed toand no longer want to do without.

Would you like to have a bit more? The more successful a product is and thefewer after-sales problems it has, the easier itis for a manufacturer to be generous. There-fore, we offer our customers a 3-year warran-ty on the LA Reference (which can be option-ally extended for up to a total of 5 years witha Sartorius service contract signed in the 4thand 5th years). The standard package of built-in application software provides support forthe user for more than just the most frequentlaboratory procedures. Even when it comes to the most challenging applications, such as determining the minimal sample weightaccording to the United States Pharma-copoeia or continuously displaying the uncer-tainty of measurement in accordance withthe German Calibration Service (DKD), theuser will find the model that is most suitablefor his or her requirements. A USB adaptercable is included as standard equipment with every LA Reference for fast and conven-ient connection to a laptop or a desktop computer.

The LA Reference series of laboratory balances features an especially extensiverange comprising 31 models. For every weighing task, users can find their ideal bal-ance - beginning with weighing operations of 0.1 mg and ranging to those up to 34 kg.There is even a special model for weighinglarge-area filters along with the associatedparticulates emissions.

Reliable, flat and smallInnovative new OEM weigh cells

The OEM business area of the SartoriusMechatronics Division is exhibiting its prod-uct innovations at Achema 2006 in Frankfurt. Not only have new developments been car-ried out based on the successful WZA seriesbut Sartorius has also implemented com-pletely new ways of thinking:

Safe installation – WZA Ex seriesIntrinsically safe, compact and with the high-est possible resolution – up to now suchATEX-compliant weigh cells were a figmentonly of the imagination. Automatic batchingand weighing of potentially explosive powderand liquid materials can now be carried outwith the aid of the intrinsically safe WZA Exseries. Weighing capacities from 12 kg downto 60 g with resolutions from 100 mg downto 100 µg offer the right weighing sensor for every application – certified for use inzones 1 and 21. The basic product features ofthe WZA, such as the stainless steel housing, internal overload protection and easy adapta-tion to customer-specific sample carriers“with only 3 screws,” have been retained. CE-compliance can be taken as a matter ofcourse with respect to these WZA weighingsensors.

Flat construction – WZA 225 CWWeigh cells that take account of restrictedspace conditions are required for installationin robots, especially desktop robots for labo-ratory analysis. The needs of the customersare for as low a height as possible combinedwith excellent weighing characteristics(weighing capacity: 220 g; resolution: 10 µg).At the same time, it is also essential to build in, optimally within the space, the inter-nal calibration weight, which is important for calibration. Sartorius has achievedextreme speed and excellent stability in theWZA 225 CW by optimizing the thermal balance of this cell. This combination ofweighing parameters and a weigh cell con-struction height of only 68 mm (~ 2.7 in.) –important for the application – makes theproduct unique.

“The smallest scale in the world” – WZV1.5 SEThe WZV1.5 SE combines several weigh cellconcepts in accordance with the EMC* principle. A compact twin cell is obtained by using two weighing systems in a singlehousing. In doing so, the weighing systemsare arranged vertically instead of horizontally– as in traditional systems. The weighing module – complete with evaluation elec-tronics – can be plugged in vertically on a surface area of only approx. 13 cm2 (about 2 square inches).

In addition to the linear arrangement ofweighing points, which is well known for horizontal weigh cells, WZV1.5 SE weigh cellscan also be combined in a hitherto unfeasiblematrix arrangement. This new feature permitsapplications and problem solutions that, previously, were inconceivable. By this means, six high-resolution scales can be placed onthe surface area of a credit card.

A weighing capacity of 1 g with a resolutionof 10 µg is suitable, for example, for con-trolled batching of pharmaceutical compo-nents and thereby supports production incompliance with PAT.

The innovative strength of Sartorius isreflected in these product novelties, whichwould not be possible without vibrant cus-tomer relationships – in accordance with themotto “Creating success together.” Talk to usabout your problem and experience our com-petence and wealth of ideas for yourself!

Conventional metal detectors that are used inquality control in industry produce an elec-tromagnetic alternating field. Any metal con-taminants in the product to be tested deflectthe field lines and can be evaluated as anelectrical signal and thus be made visible.Diverse disturbances can adversely affect thedetection accuracy attainable, however. Themajor disturbances are the product effect(changing conductivity due to fluctuations inmoisture, salt content and/or in temperature)and the influences of metallized packages, such as aluminum-coated foil. The latter isincreasingly being used in the food and phar-maceutical industries because the diffusion-inhibiting properties of this type of packagingconsiderably extend the product shelf life. Sofar, the only method for reliable detection ofmetal in aluminum packages has been x-raytechnology. However, this technology is veryexpensive and requires elaborate safety mea-sures to ensure protection against radiation.

By contrast, the new Sartorius OBSERVER™metal detector dispenses entirely with thiscontroversial and, for the manufacturer, highly expensive technology. Without time-consuming fine adjustment, the OBSERVER™delivers optimal results that are free of theeffects of aluminum-coated packages and/orunstable product properties.

Sartorius MoveLine flat-bed weighing platforms

Ideal for use in areas where hygiene, health and reliability are key factors.

The ultra-low profile flat-bed scales of the IF series have been speciallydeveloped for use in chemical and pharmaceutical production areas in which pit installation is not permitted due to the risk of contamina-tion. Thanks to the ultra-flat design – a mere 25 mm (1-inch) “high” –heavy containers can be rolled onto the platform with ease. There aretwo versions of the IF scale available for our customers, to ensure thatall applications and requirements are covered.

The first of these is equipped with rollers and handles, making it easyto tip the scale up on one side and move it.

The second MoveLine model is equipped with wheels that can be lowered from the bottom of the weighing platform, using a specialmechanism that simultaneously lifts the scale from the floor. Once the wheels are down and the platform is up, the scale can be rolledaway from its place of use so the floor beneath it can be cleaned.

The chance that sample material falls to the floor during weighingcannot be ruled out – and when it falls, it can leave deposits in spotsthat are difficult to clean. This is precisely the reason that the “crank-lift deck” mechanism was developed; to enable effortless cleaning ofeven hard-to-reach areas.

With this new lifting system, the flat-bed scale can be shifted withvery little effort – even with just one hand, using a towing bar. Thus, the area under the entire scale can be convenientley cleaned. Thismechanism is unique among flat-bed scales and meets the latestoccupational safety regulations, such as the internationally applicableLifting Equation from the National Institute for Occupational Safetyand Health (NIOSH).

Both versions of the flat-bed scale are available in a choice of surfacefinishes (including electropolished) and stainless steel grades (AISI 304or AISI 316 Ti).

Sartorius develops the world’s most accurate balanceThe super mass comparator CCL1007 enables 1-kilogram weightsto be measured in the nanogram range

tutes, which need to ensure the accuracy ofthe unit of measure for mass in their respec-tive countries, or in research, where highlyaccurate mass determination is essential.

The BIPM in France, guardians of the proto-type kilogram, set the standards that thissuper mass comparator had to meet. Knownby its official French name, Bureau Interna-tional des Poids et Mesures (InternationalOffice of Weights and Measures), this insti-tute had been working with a prototype masscomparator, FB2, a development of its own. However, the FB2 could not be used to mea-sure the mass of 1-kg silicon spheres becauseof their size (94 mm or 3.7 in. d). The BIPMfound a capable partner by turning toSartorius, which took care of developing anew prototype mass comparator that couldmeet the requirements of this measurementtask. The CCL1007 mass comparator could besuccessfully developed with the help of theBIPM’s scientific know-how and the techno-logical expertise of the Institute for ProcessMeasurement and Sensor Technology at theFaculty of Machine Engineering at the Tech-nical University of Ilmenau, Germany.

The world’s most accurate mass comparatorhas sparked the interest of the media (docu-mentary reports on TV, radio stations and intechnical journals) and of the attendees ofcongresses, conferences and trade shows. The PTB in Germany has already put this supermass comparator into operation and the

Taking the dreaded piecework out ofweighing small partsSartorius SartoPac Basic is now on the market with its own vibrating feeder

Pharmacopeia requirements for dispensing pharmaceuticalsIndividually dosed medicines, such as tabletsor capsules, must be exactly and consistentlydispensed according to the requirements ofpharmacopeias to ensure that a medicinealways has the same (desired) effect on thepatient. Mass-related dispensing accuracy istechnically the easiest to monitor, since itsimply requires weight testing. However, thismakes sense and can be applied if, and onlywhen, the active pharmaceutical ingredient ishomogeneously distributed, as with uncoatedtablets and granulates, film tablets, capsulesor powders.

Manual sample testing of small partsSmall parts with a weight of up to 500 mgand an accuracy requirement of 1% must beweighed with analytical balances or high-resolution precision balances (1 mg) accord-ing to the rule of thumb that says “measuringequipment must be at least 3x times as exactas accuracy requirements.” In general, thesample to be weighed is placed on the bal-ance with tweezers and a draft shield must beclosed. A pharmacopeia sample of 20 tabletsor capsules will therefore intensively occupy a tester for 4 minutes. Prior to testing, theactual amount of the active pharmaceuticalingredient must be evaluated, a target weightestablished and a reference weight deter-mined. Regular weight testing runs are docu-mented by a batch record in which the aver-age is calculated and the resulting variationmeasured. Control limits are set in accordancewith European pharmacopoeia (“Pharma-copeia Europea”).

Optimal implementation of these require-ments with the YTF01 vibrating feederThis all stainless steel vibrating feeder isintended for use in combination with the SartoPac Basic for semi-automated sampling, enabling the automatic individualized feedingof around 100 tablets, capsules and othersmall parts of equal weight, independent oftheir size. An emptying switch simplifies theemptying of the feeder bowl. The housing of the YTF01 is electropolished; the feederbowl has a brushed finish so that the samplescan be conveyed with greater efficiency. This extremely rugged construction allows foreasy and complete cleaning and disinfectionrequired in the pharmaceutical field.

The procedure is as follows: Around 25 tabletsor capsules are poured into the feeder bowland the sample test run is started on the SartoPac Basic. In the control loop betweenthe vibrating feeder and the balance, thetablets or capsules to be tested are individual-ly shaken onto the feeder chute and then tothe weighing pan where they are reliablyweighed after simple calibration and adjust-ment of the balance.

The sample testing results are available in just 2–3 minutes. With a sampling interval of15–30 minutes, the system will pay for itselfin just a short time. The tester can assess theprocess quality based on the sampling results, print out a batch report or transfer the results to a connected computer by using theappropriate software. This semi-automatedsampling process saves a great deal of timethat the tester can then use for other things.

An example of successful application in the fieldThis challenge, which Sartorius met with flying colors, was posed by a customer: toautomatically weigh plastic granulate (roundand partially transparent pellets) and transferthe data to a computer. The 2–3 mm(0.08–0.11 in.) granulate pellets with a weightof 11–18 mg had been manually weighed inthe past in a time-consuming process in

which the customer placed each pellet indi-vidually on a 4-digit balance and then typedthe data into an Excel spreadsheet. This test-ing procedure took around 1 hour per testrun for a sampling size of 100 pellets.

The results of the testing using the YTF01 incombination with the SPB-LA230 (SartoPacBasic package including an analytical balance,SartoPac Basic software and printer) revealeda clear set of advantages for the customer:

good pellet transport, optimal detection ofthe pellets within the system, no typos duringautomatic transfer of the data into Excel anda time reduction of over 60% to just around20 minutes. Taking the manpower of theoperator into account, the time saved by thisautomated process is considerably greater.

Cleaning is now a cinchMoveLine ultra-low profile flat-bed scale installed at a Swedish vaccine manufacturer’s facilities

Tillquist AB, authorized Sartorius dealer inSweden, supplied the Swedish independentvaccine company SBL Vaccines with a “Move-Line” ultra-low profile flat-bed scale fromSartorius. The MoveLine is ideally suited foruse in pharmaceutical production.

SBL Vaccines is a privately owned Swedishcompany, specializing in the development, manufacture and marketing of vaccines andniche pharmaceuticals. Its primary researchfocus is the field of diarrheal diseases. In theNordic region, SBL Vaccines markets a com-plete vaccine portfolio sourced from globalvaccine companies.

SBL Vaccines’ core product Dukoral® is an oralvaccine that protects against cholera andETEC, or enterotoxic Escherichia coli, causingwhat is commonly known as travelers’ diar-rhea. Dukoral® is licensed and available inmore than 50 countries worldwide includingEU, Canada and Australia.

Equipment for production purposes in a cleanroom needs to fulfill stringent requirementsregarding cleanability to be suitable for use inthis environment. This is why SBL Vaccineschose the MoveLine ultra-low profile flat-bedscale from Sartorius. MoveLine models have a special lift deck system that lowers thewheels, mounted on the bottom of the scale,so that they are on the floor. For the employ-ees of SBL Vaccines, this means that cleaningof the scale will never be a problem. More-over, the scales can be repositioned in theproduction area with a minimum of effort, which facilitates cleaning of the floors in

clean rooms. Sample material that falls to thefloor during weighing tends to lie directlynext to the bottom of the scale. The uniquelift-deck system on MoveLine models makes iteasy to clean even these hard-to-reach areas. This mechanism is unique among flat-bedscales, and meets the latest occupationalsafety regulations, such as the internationallyapplicable Lifting Equation from the NationalInstitute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH).

Employees at SBL Vaccines are pleased withthe “height” of the scale – only 25 mm – as this facilitates loading and unloading thescale. The products to be weighed can beeffortlessly rolled onto the scale. A YDP03printer is connected to the Combics 3 ter-minal and configured for GMP-compliantprintouts.

IFS4 stainless steel weighing platformswith single-use impeller systemsConstantly focusing on customer benefits

Properties of the IFS4 stainless steelweighing platformIn 2005, Sartorius started offering its cus-tomers the IFS4 stainless steel weighing platform for use with a product from the bio-processing sector. IFS4 flat-bed scales areemployed by the biopharmaceutical industryfor filling level management in typical mixingapplications. Equipped with a strain-gauge, a weighing capacity of 600, 1,500 or 3,000 kgand a resolution of up to 30,000 digits, theseplatforms feature a surface that is completelysmooth and therefore easy to clean. Becauseit has no moving parts, the scale is ideallysuited for use in cleanrooms rated to class10,000 in accordance with US Federal Stan-dard 209 D (equivalent to Class C in accor-dance with EEC GMP).

Lower production costs, faster production, greater reliabilityLast year, Sartorius AG signed an agreementwith LevTech Inc., USA, giving Sartorius theexclusive worldwide distribution rights toLevTech's proprietary innovative mixing andimpeller technologies. Recently before that,Sartorius had forged a strategic partnershipwith TC Tech Inc., USA, allowing Sartorius to exclusively market single-use biopharma-ceutical fluid bags and mixing technologiesfrom Sartorius in Europe and Asia.

Disposable fluid handling bags meet customerdemands for lower production costs, faster-paced production and enhanced reliability.Given their vast expertise in the fields of filtration and bag manufacturing, togetherthe two companies now offer customers fluidprocessing and storage systems as well asprocess solutions that have both a direct andmeasurable impact on these requirements.

Bioprocess integration at biopharmaceuti-cal laboratories and production facilitiesThe IFS4 flat-bed scales are ideal for use inconjunction with LevTech impeller systems.

For applications like media priming andbuffer preparation that rely on impeller-based processes, the IFS4 platforms are a logi-cal complement to LevTech's impeller unit.IFS4 weighing platforms additionally offerusers major plusses like its ultra-flat designwith a height of a mere 25 mm (barely aninch) as well as its integrated and convenientlifting mechanism, which makes cleaningultra-easy.

The decisive advantage of integrating theSartorius IFS4 type flat-bed scales lies in theprocess integration of filtration, storage, mixing, weighing and formulating, which –for the first time – is represented by Sartoriusproducts exclusively. Purification steps likerecirculation and diafiltration, as well as viralinactivation, benefit even more from thisprocess solution. Here, using appropriate con-trollers, flexible control options allow theprocesses to be adapted to the application, for example, for driving various process components like pumps, by control signalstransmitted by the scale.

Sartorius is investing its drive and energy inthe further development of additional solu-tions featuring an even greater degree ofautomation for this environment. That way, it will be better equipped as a total solutionprovider to face the future challenges thatsuch innovative processes will bring.

Applications

Products & customersEppendorf AG is one of the world's leadingsuppliers for the entire research sector of thelife sciences industry, and especially for thegrowth sector of biotechnology. Its activitiesfocus on customized system solutions thatposition the company uniquely on the market by offering:

• Instruments such as pipettes, dispensers andcentrifuges as well as consumables such astest tubes, pipette tips and microtiter platesalong with instruments and systems for cellmanipulation, automated devices for liquidhandling, DNA multiplication, nucleic acidpurification as well as biochips.

The product range addresses academic andcommercial research facilities as well asindustrial companies in the biotechnologyfield or in other branches that utilize biotech-nology research methods.

Data & factsEstablished in 1945, Eppendorf is headquar-tered in Hamburg, Germany, and currentlyemploys more than 1,750 people worldwide. The group owns subsidiaries in strategicallyimportant countries, and is represented in allother markets by distribution partners. In2004, Eppendorf's sales revenue reachedalmost ¤287 million with an operating result(EBIT) of ¤40.11 million.

Eppendorf aims to expand its successful market position in dynamic biotechnologymarkets even further, using its proprietaryexpertise to open up new areas of applicationwith organic growth potential in the life sciences. Eppendorf leverages its investmentsby acquiring innovative technologies thatcomplement its product portfolio.

Leaner processes & improved documentationOne key part of Eppendorf's organization is itsservice. At its Service Center in Hamburg,Germany, pipettes are calibrated along withother instruments. In the past, many pipetteusers had to put up with long waiting periodsfor the pipettes they sent in or, often, theyeven just refrained from having their pipettescalibrated altogether. This situation haschanged 180°.

Since the broader pipette-consumer industrymaintains advanced quality management sys-tems or even works in accredited or validatedsectors, the topics of controlling the accuracyof inspection, measuring and test equipmentand management of this equipment areincreasingly gaining importance. Regular cali-brations of pipettes have become an integralpart of these processes where fast, accurateand superior quality servicing is paramount.Eppendorf Service does justice to these industry demands. Not only did it become a DIN ISO 17025-accredited calibration laboratory in 2004, but, even better, it alsoinvested in a Sartorius SpeedCal System.

How can the time previously needed for testing pipettes be utilized even more sensibly? Is it still possible to actually improve the current quality level even further? Eppendorfhas proved that this is indeed possible by using the SpeedCal testing unit for multi-chan-nel piston pipettes in its calibration laboratory. SpeedCal has enabled Eppendorf tostreamline its process sequences while raising customer satisfaction to new heights.

SpeedCal can test up to 12 pipette channels simultaneously.

Since it has been usingSpeedCal, Eppendorf’s calibration laboratory hasposted huge time savingsand more satisfied customers.

Applications

Using SpeedCal benefits calibration labsSuccessful testing and calibration of multi-channel piston pipettes under actual operat-ing conditions can now be carried out in calibration laboratories. SpeedCal cuts thethroughput time per pipette down to aneighth or twelfth of the original time. WithSpeedCal, all measuring procedures apartfrom the pipetting process itself are run fullyautomatically, with instant test records gen-erated and logged on the interfaced PC. Theintegrated evaporation trap ensures values ofhighest accuracy. Another key advantage isthat taring is automatically performed afterthe measured values have been logged. WithSpeedCal, Eppendorf not only saves enormousamounts of time on individual procedures, but can also offer its customers much better service.

Michael Bremer, Head of Service and QualityManagement at Eppendorf Vertrieb Deutsch-land GmbH, appreciates all the added bene-fits: “SpeedCal helped us cut back our measuring times immensely, while generatingenhanced efficiencies in our calibration labo-ratory, and, as a spin-off, much more satisfiedcustomers. Right now, SpeedCal is the bestalternative this special weighing segment hasto offer. Success was equally driven by thegood preparation and support in the planningand implementing of the project that wasprovided by Sartorius staff. Everybody’s con-stant and foremost objective was to create a close and constructive collaboration and tofurther enhance working conditions and optimize processes at our company.”

What is so special about the banded mongoose? For 10 years now, the wild banded mongoosepopulation on the Mweya Peninsula in QueenElizabeth National Park has been studied bybehavioral biologists. Banded mongooses live in packs of up to 70 individuals. These arethe largest known groups of carnivores in the world. Some unusual behaviors that havebeen discovered over the course of recentyears make these small predators especiallyinteresting. As a rule, all adult females in acolony get pregnant at the same time andoften give birth in perfect synchronization onjust one night. A large part of the subsequentraising of the young is not done by the par-ents, but is a communal activity taken care ofby other members of the colony. In the firstweeks after birth, different individual animalsremain behind in the den as babysitters whilethe group heads out to forage for food. Afterthe young animals are old enough to leavethe den, each chooses an adult companion to

feed and protect it from preda-tors over the coming weeks.

What were the findings fromthe weight data provided bySartorius know-how? Banded mongooses were firstconfronted by a balance fiveyears ago. After an initial famil-iarization phase, most of thecurious animals were easy toconvince to climb up onto thebalance regularly in the morningand the evening. This enabledresearchers to gather importantdata regarding individual differ-ences in physical condition and daily success of the searchfor food.

Are you familiar with the fascinating characteristics of the banded mon-goose? A large part of the information about these animals is regularly collected in the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda using a Sartoriuslaboratory balance.

Ruggedness and quick response time, along with quick and easy taring, are only some of the advantages the Sartorius balance offers.

Page 20: WEIGHAHEAD 17 - Sartorius · in Sartorius mass comparators CCE series – a new generation of mass comparators Taking the dreaded piecework out of weighing small parts

From this data, conclusions were drawn about the unusual social system of the band-ed mongooses. For example, babysitters loseup to 2% of their body weight in just one day,and adults who provide the young with foodgain considerably less weight than animalswho only have to provide for themselves. Theyoung animals do not choose their providersrandomly. They prefer individuals who are ingood physical condition and are successfulforagers, for they are better able to bear theadditional burden of caring for the young andgive their small companions, who are alwayshungry and constantly beg for food, more to eat.

The regular weighing process means thatpregnancies, miscarriages and births can bereliably recorded, which is essential to theassessment of individual reproductive success.Using this information, researchers haveshown that banded mongooses practice pop-ulation control: if too many females are pregnant at the same time in a pack, theyoungest of the pregnant females areharassed by the rest of the group until theconstant stress causes a premature miscar-riage or the tortured animals leave the pack.Since the aggressors also lose weight, the precise recording of body weight is necessaryto be able to distinguish between animalsthat have suffered a miscarriage and thoseanimals that only exhibit a temporary weightloss due to their activity in the group.

What were the qualities that made the balance so indispensable on thisassignment? The use of the Sartorius balance in theAfrican Savanna was very valuable for thezoologists from Zurich and Cambridge: “The application in Queen Elizabeth NationalPark made unusual demands for mobility and ruggedness on the balances used. Thesewere excellently fulfilled by the BL3: it can beeasily transported in a backpack and is highlyresistant to strong vibration, moisture anddust, which, during the 4-month long dryperiod, is present in excessive quantities. Itwas also repeatedly subjected to the ratherforceful approaches of the mongooses. Boththe fast response time and the quick and easy tare function were indispensable, forwithout them it would not have been possibleto accurately weigh these wild animals.”

At the moment, around half of the popula-tion under study has gotten so used to thebalance that regular weight data can be collected. With a concerted effort and thecontinuing reliability of the Sartorius bal-ances, the zoologists hope to gather valuablelong-term data over the coming year, whichwill lead to new insights into the behavior of these exceptionally social carnivores.

ApplicationsChemistry requires precise weighing of necessary reagentsALGOCHEM uses Sartorius laboratory balances for its process optimization

Company profile:ALGOCHEM specializes in the automation ofchemical process technology in laboratoriesand industry. The company has extensiveexpertise in the experimental fields of thera-peutic chemistry (pharmaceuticals), chemicalprocess engineering, automation and infor-matics. In addition to automation technology,ALGOCHEM integrates measurement andanalysis systems for process engineering andoptimization in research (screening) anddevelopment (optimization). As such, thecompany develops efficient, productive andergonomic solutions by chemists for chemists.

Precise quantity control for chemical reactionsThe ARLA-multi, a multi-reaction system, is oneof ALGOCHEM’s products. It ideally meets thedemands for precision, processing capacity, ergonomics and productivity. The hardwareconsists of a number of reactors (generally 2-8) along with a heating/cooling system thatfunctions independently of each respectivereactor. Other components of this systeminclude a bubbler, sensors for temperature,pH or spectrometry, and pumps and balancesfor the admixing of liquid substances withinthe system.

In chemistry, successful process optimizationis dependent first and foremost on precisionin the admixture of different reagents. Theamounts required for chemical reactions mustbe stoichiometrically calculated, for even thesmallest discrepancy in the amount, either ashortage or excess, would contaminate thefinal product. ALGOCHEM chose Sartoriuslaboratory balances as the ”support column” for their dosage system to enable them to dojustice to this demand for precision.

Exact measurements and dosages – easy as pieDepending on the special requirements of thelaboratory-technical application, the basicsystem can be expanded with different mod-ules. With the filter module, for example, one can automatically decant the contents ofthe reactor into a filter, create a vacuum inthe system, empty the reactor, fill it with

Determining the optimal operating conditions in process development is an extremelylabor-intensive process that requires the management of many empirical values. For this reason, process automation systems are essential tools for the work of chemistsboth for process optimization and for running test series under variable conditions.

detergent, heat it up and wash and dry theresidua. Other modules make the admixing of gas possible with the highest level of preci-sion. Here, too, the Sartorius precision bal-ances have proven themselves to be reliablebuilding blocks for the measurement of eventhe smallest amounts and as such guarantee a highly precise and regular infeed.

Additionally, ARLA multi can be outfittedwith an automatic distillation module with anelectronic runback controller. The Sartoriusscales successfully integrated into this processensure the constant measurement of the dis-tillate mass and thus ensure reliable reactorinfeed with the amounts required for solventexchange.

Both the ARLA and ARLA-multi systems fromALGOCHEM are especially powerful thanks to the complete integration of the differentsoftware blocks. After a process cycle hasended, a laboratory protocol can be createdwith the assistance of the report editor. This system has proved its effectiveness inresearch and process optimization in thechemical and pharmaceutical industries.Appropriate designs for the biotechnology(biofermentors) and cosmetic industries are also available.

Process sequences using SPCfWin Ethernet at L’Oréal in Karlsruhe, Germany

The L’Oréal GroupL'Oréal is represented in over 130 countriesand boasts a portfolio of brands that are marketed all over the world. With sales of14.53 billion euros in 2005, L’Oréal is thenumber one marketer in the cosmetics indus-try worldwide. The L’Oréal Group occupies aprominent position in the four most impor-tant cosmetics branches: hair care, decorativecosmetics, perfumes and skin care. In order tomeet the needs of its customers, L’Oréal hasdeveloped products for every distributionchannel: beauty salons, department stores, consumer markets, drug stores, perfumeries, pharmacies and duty free shops as well asmail order. For almost a century, research hasbeen at the core of L’Oréal's strategy and cul-ture. Every year, between three and four per-cent of L’Oréal’s sales flow back into research. This makes L’Oréal the company that investsthe most in its research.

In February 2005, Sartorius was chosen as L’Oréal's worldwide preferred supplier. The agreement between the two compa-nies relates to all weighing, batching andfilling equipment used in the laboratoryand industrial areas of the company andall electrochemical products, as well as allmaintenance and service aspects, includ-ing those for products from competitors.

Quality & the environmentL’Oréal has introduced a system of permanentquality control and improvement that is comprised of two levels: precise quality stan-dards for all basic ingredients, packagingmaterials, production processes or sequencesrelated to manufacture and, of course, for all finished products. Furthermore, the com-pany has a control system that guaranteesconformity of the individual standards to thecomprehensive standards at L’Oréal.

Sartorius implements requirements at the filling workstationsIn the past, L’Oréal worked with a large num-ber of Sartorius precision balances that wereused for manual offline weight checking. In1998, the company was on the lookout for a PC network-supported version. After considerable research, a networked system for average weight control at the fillingworkstations was set up that same year inaccordance with these requirements.

Two variations of the system were discussedamong the Sartorius project consultants,L’Oréal project management, the qualitymanagement (QM) department and the ITdepartment. The more complex version withPC-supported workstations was ultimatelygiven preference, with the central databaseinstalled on a high-performance server in the IT area. The database administrators andQM employees manage the master data, and monitor and evaluate weighing data andstatistics on the PCs at their workstations.

Advantages of the PC network-supportedversion of average weight controlThe following reasons influenced the decisionin favor of the PC network-supported versionof average weight control:

1. Integration into the available BDE systemand the ability to use existing IT structuresHydra, the existing production data acquisi-tion system manufactured by MPDV MikrolabGmbH in Mosbach, Germany, was alreadyrunning on the workstation PCs with touchscreens in rugged PC racks. Therefore, it wasconvenient to connect the Sartorius balancesto the respective PCs. The PC data acquisitionmodule of the SPCfWin software now runsconstantly alongside the BDE software in aseparate task. Because it is mandatory thatthe BDE system always has the current batchdata (product, line and batch numbers), asolution was sought that would relieve theuser from entering data into the weighingsystem a second time.

In conjunction with MPDV, a solution wasdevised that allowed simple switchingbetween the BDE and average weight controlapplications and, moreover, automaticallytransferred the particular batch data fromBDE to the Sartorius SPCfWin data acquisi-tion terminal. This is a reliable way to rule outinput errors and save work hours as well.

2. Minimal downtimes thanks to standardized technical support from the IT department The IT department keeps preinstalled work-station PCs (standard desktop PCs) on handthat can replace a defective unit within a very short time. All configuration data for theworkstation PCs are stored on the server andcan be downloaded into an exchanged PC at the touch of a key. Therefore, the replace-ment unit is immediately ready for use.

Customer satisfaction across the boardAll of the project goals that L’Oréal andSartorius set for themselves were attained. The combination of MPDV and the SartoriusSPCfWin QA system provides reliable servicein the daily production routines of the com-pany because the filling workstations arecompletely under control. Meanwhile, furtherL’Oréal workstations are currently beingequipped with SPCfWin weighing systems, such as its new production facilities in China.

Currently, conversion of the SPCfWin data-base to Microsoft® SQL and the extension byadding the function of attributive testing arebeing engineered. Both companies are surethat they will successfully implement newprojects in the future as well.

Batching of raw materials for the production of chewable sweetsImpressive installation of batching equipment with a BATCH-X5controller at VIVIL

24 |

Applications

VIVIL - the company with the “fresh variety”Today, more than 100 years after the pro-duction of the first sweet, VIVIL is a familybusiness into its 4th generation. The 222employees are responsible – both in Germanyand 30 countries worldwide – for sales of the various VIVIL products, which have beenquite considerably extended over the courseof time and in response to constantly changing consumer tastes.

The search for a refreshing sweet began when, while serving in the infantry, the founderof the VIVIL company yearned for invigorating refreshment. As a result, in 1903, August Müller-Vivil produced the first peppermint sweet on the market, signifying asmall, fresh breath revolution.

Automatic process sequences, increased production requirements and a rise in marketdemand today call for the installation of high-quality products, such as batching equipment - including the BATCH-X5 controller from Sartorius.

The products include hardboiled sweets suchas cough drops, peppermint candies, herbdrops, fruit sweets and many others, com-pressed sweets, e.g. fruit pastilles and sugar-coated candies. However, VIVIL is also suc-cessful with its sugar-free and reducedcalorie sweets, the demand for which is con-stantly increasing. Product names such asVIVIL Cool, VIVIL Wellness, VIVIL Fun+Energyand VIVIL Latte Macchiato cater to a varietyof people and needs.

Batching equipment with a BATCH-X5controller in the production process forchewable sweetsFor high-quality and fast production of largequantities, automated process sequences notonly save time, but also meet today’s require-ments imposed by the food industry.

In view of this background, batching equip-ment – including the BATCH-X5 controllerfrom Sartorius – was integrated into a largeproduction plant and incorporated into theproduction process. This plant was developedin cooperation with Sartorius Hamburg’s system partner for the sweets industry, Uwe Wilhelm Engineering, responsible for the electrical componentry, and with Fluid-Kotthoff, which supplied the mechanicalknow-how.

The plant serves to batch ingredients, such aswater, sugar and glucose, as well as bindingagents like starch and gelatin. After batching, the mass is heated with steam (double jacket)to produce a saturated sugar solution. By the installation of a disperser (special stirringmechanism), powdery materials, such asstarch, can be mixed into the mass. Thisprocess produces what are known as hard and soft sugar solutions, which are used forsugar-coating the chewable sweets.

Equipment in the sweets industry is very often cleaned with water, which is noproblem for the Sartorius controller.

Page 25: WEIGHAHEAD 17 - Sartorius · in Sartorius mass comparators CCE series – a new generation of mass comparators Taking the dreaded piecework out of weighing small parts

In the preliminary manufacturing process, the chewable sweet mass is produced in acontinuous cooking plant and subsequentlyshaped into “candy” drops by means of aforming machine. A conveyor system thentransports the drops to a sugar-coating plant,in which they are coated with a hard or softsugar solution. In the next manufacturingprocess, the chewable sweets are taken by aconveyor system to fill the hoppers.

Quality, reliability and performance justifythe use of Sartorius productsPrice and performance were the main reasonsthat the customer selected this equipmentsolution. Project engineering management, commissioning and training were mainly han-dled by Uwe Wilhelm Engineering. The pro-duction quantities that can now be achievedand produced at short intervals and theassurance of consistent sugar solution quality – which is guaranteed in all cases bythe automatic batching – speak in favor ofthe performance.

Frank Bräger, VIVIL’s electrical engineeringmanager, commented as follows: “Since wewere due to change our company’s old BATCHweighing systems in the medium term, welooked into the possibility of replacementsolutions. It became apparent from assessingour needs for the weighing system that theBATCH-X5 controller from Sartorius wouldmeet all our requirements. The most impor-tant points here were the possibility toexchange the weighing system while retain-ing the rest of the control technology, theapplication (initially as a stand-alone system),

the possibility of central storage of recipe and consumption quantity data, batch traceability, later connection to PPS and the knowledge that, in Sartorius, we have a reliable partner.”

“Since we use Sartorius equipment in the laboratory and in production, as individualscales (manual weighing), we are convincedof the performance and quality of this labo-ratory and process company and its products.Due to our experiences in recent years, it is extremely important to us to work with a reliable partner and to guarantee our invest-ment for the future.”

In addition, Sartorius has proved that notonly should the customer’s needs andrequirements be met in the best possible way,but that this should also be done quickly andflexibly. For this reason, for some time nowVivil has also been using Sartorius metaldetectors, which meet the requirements of IFS certification (IFS: International Food Standard) and with which the company ishighly satisfied.

Optimized process in incoming inspectionFork lifter equipped with an isi30 terminal

26 |

Applications

How is incoming inspection performed and how is the indicating terminal inte-grated into this process?Fruits and vegetables that are loaded on each truck that arrives have to be unloaded, weighed and distributed according to theindividual retailers or according to produce. For this purpose, EURIPESA uses a fork lifterbecause of the heavy weight of the crates and pallets. To improve the process chainfrom incoming inspection to subsequentwarehousing or direct shipment to the retail-ers, the company decided to integrate theSartorius isi30 display terminal.

This indicator is directly mounted on the forklifter and connected to a correspondingweighing system. Moreover, a strip printer isalso installed directly on the vehicle. Locatedon the leveling feet are load cells that weighproduce according to a maximum capacity of 1,500 kg with a readability of 0.5 kg.

As soon as a box filled with vegetables or fruit or a pallet containing food is loadedonto the fork lifter, the date, time, code anddesignation of the product are registered by the display. In addition, the fork lift opera-tor enters the name and address of the cus-tomer as well as the name and code of thesupplier. Then the isi30 terminal shows thenumber of weighing operations performed, and this information is printed out by thecontinuous strip printer. The printout is thenplaced inside the box or pallet or prepareddirectly for sending to the particular supplier.

Sartorius in Portugal successfully works with EURIPESA, one of its sales distributors forthe food industry. This young and newly founded family business installed an isi30 displayterminal at one of its customers’ facilities specializing in a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. This terminal has improved and accelerated incoming inspection at EURIPESA,which receives healthy produce from various farms and distributes it to individual retailers.

Which advantages does the Sartorius display terminal offer? The large alphanumeric display is optimallyeasy to read. The keys featuring positive clickaction provide tactile “feedback” at all times, and help prevent operating errors, especiallybecause the operators wear gloves for handling the produce.

The terminal enables storage of up to 300products and 30 tare weights and automaticreference sample updating, thus eliminatingerror-prone hand-counting of relatively largequantities. In this way, EURIPESA not only has a higher counting accuracy, but also saves time and money.

With this type of application, the vendor has a complete register of the fruit and vegetable types unloaded at its warehouse, all specified according to the individual suppliers and products.

Correct use and handling of analyticaland microbalancesShort and sweet: some valuable information for our customers

In many fields of application, a balance – or,more precisely, the weight value it determines– is merely a means to an end, forming thebasis for determination of the dimension orparameter actually sought. The laboratorybalance, an indispensable tool for analysis, has undergone some impressive changes overthe past three decades. Once a symbol of solid precision engineering, it was “banished”to a special weighing room, accessible to onlya select few. Today, it is a mainstay of thestandard equipment in state-of-the-art labo-ratories for research and development and in production.

Thanks to the latest in design principles, laboratory balances are rugged, relativelyresilient and easy to operate, with intelligentelectronics that make them adaptable andflexible. Powerful processors enable fast dis-play updates and almost real-time processingof all signals. Laboratory balances of the lat-est generation are equipped with functionsthat permit complete applications to be per-formed with astoundingly simple operation.Furthermore, both their software and hard-ware make them ideally suited for the ever-increasing automation of laboratories.

The accuracy of today's analytical balances, particularly semi-micro- and microbalanceswith resolutions of over 20 million scaleintervals, depends not only on the balanceitself but essentially on ambient conditions, the weights, types of sample material and the correct handling of the equipment. Theconditions for installation of laboratory balances and industrial scales, in particularthe physical disturbance factors in laborato-ries and production areas, which wereobserved as a matter of course in the days ofmechanical scales, are often ignored today.

An unstable or non-repeatable readout isoften caused by factors that affect both thebalance and the sample, such as fluctuationsin temperature, evaporation, static electricity, magnetism, and other factors. In most cases, the root of the problem is an actual change in weight, which must be displayed by a high-resolution balance. A good understanding ofthe disturbances that distort weighing resultsis helpful in ensuring that the prerequisitesfor the required level of accuracy are met, which, in turn, helps prevent misinterpreta-tion of the weighing results obtained. High-quality balances react to even the slightestchange in ambient conditions or other physical variables, and this is reflected in thereadout. If the installation and ambient conditions have been considered and rejectedas the source of a disturbance, the problemmight lie with the sample and/or container.

Working closely with our customers, we haveoften been able to help optimize their weigh-ing procedures significantly by providingadditional information on some of the basictechnical principles involved. Now we haveput together a brochure explaining the mainfactors for consideration in the installationand use of high-resolution balances.

Our aim with this brochure is to presentimportant details in a “short and sweet” format, to sensitize users to these factors.

Have you ever been faced with any of the following questions?

– Why are response times so long?– Why are the weighing results so unstable,

or so difficult to reproduce? – Why is the long-term stability so poor?– How long must the instrument warm up

before use, and how stable must the ambient temperature be?

– Can humidity have an effect on my weighing operations?

– Which sample container is the best for myweighing operations?

– What characteristics of the sample canaffect the weight value displayed?

– How can I detect electrostatic effects?– How often should I calibrate the balance,

and when do I need to adjust it?

You will find the answers to these and manymore questions in our small brochure, to sup-port you in your daily work with weighinginstruments. The brochure is available in bothEnglish and German, and will later be offeredin French, Italian and Spanish. In future, wewill include this brochure with all analyticaland microbalances that we ship.

ISO 22000Is this the end of the confusion in audit standards in the food industry?

1. The challengeISO 9001 and ISO 9000:2000, which havemeanwhile been established as industrialstandards, are viewed by the food industry asunsatisfactory. They do not allow for compli-ance with hygiene regulations, which are particularly significant in this sector. The wounds caused by the fallout from pastquality failures are too deep. The resultingneed for consumer safety – and thereby safe-ty in commerce – is too great.

All food standards are based on HACCP principles, which are the core elements of allprevious standards: BRC (British Retail Consortium): IFS (International Food Standard) – cf. Chapter I “IFS”

: Dutch HACCP criteria: EFSIS Standard: GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice): Q+S

The particular standard to be applied general-ly depends on the target region or customer(chain of distribution or retailers). This con-fusion in standards does not promote trans-parency and, under certain circumstances, may even affect consumer confidence. Consequently, industry demands a uniformstandard that is valid and accepted inter-nationally.

2. An approach to meet this challengeSince 2001, a commission of internationalexperts (ISO TC 34 WG 8) has been developinga standard that harmonizes, combines andbrings into alignment the above mentionedStandards: ISO 22000. The goal in the medi-um term was to develop food safety manage-ment systems that compile the requirementsof both private and national standards, avoidmultiple certifications and guarantee a highprofessional level in the process. Only bydoing so can confidence in food safety beregained and improved. It should be possibleto carry out system care, control and inspec-tion practicably and easily to guarantee compliance with the hygiene regulations.

At the moment there are many differentstandards in use on the market; however, nogain in quality is obtained as a result of mul-tiple certification. The clear forerunners hereare the BRC and, above all, the IFS, whichhave been incorporated into this process indetail.

3. ContentThe greatest advantage is that ISO 22000 canbe applied to the entire production chain.Due to this general application to the entireproduction chain, it is not possible for theStandard to include requirements formulatedwith respect to GMP (Good ManufacturingPractice). ISO 22000 takes account of thenational and international requirements ofalmost all retailers. It will, in all probability, become accepted as the alternative to previ-ously existing standards. ISO 22000 specifiesthe requirements for a food safety manage-ment system. It demands that companies prevent safety risks and guarantee the safetyof the food they process. This Standard can be applied by all companies that are in themanufacturing, processing, transportationand retail chain and are required to guaran-tee food safety.

ISO 22000 contains the following requirements:: Planning, introduction, maintenance andupdating of a management system with the objective of increasing product safety(consumers) and guaranteeing traceability(industry)

: Presentation of compliance with applicablefood safety requirements

: Observance of customer needs and assess-ment of customer satisfaction

: Effective communication with suppliers, customers and interested groups in the food chain

: Assurance and implementation of the formulated food safety policy

: Duty of information in respect of evidenceof legal compliance towards relevant regulatory bodies

ISO 22000 was approved as a certifiable standard in September 2005. The newISO 22000 Standard unites the requirementsof the established ISO 9001 and ISO 14001Standards, elements of HACCP and IFS/BRC.

4. ConclusionIn the final analysis, all participants are concerned about consumer protection. It isnecessary to achieve and guarantee wide-ranging confidence in the safety of food withthe aid of technically competent, comprehen-sive certification. This certification in accor-dance with different standards inevitablygives rise to overlapping tests, which is bothinefficient and costly.

The reconciliation of the current standards to form one harmonized, integrated Standard, which takes into account the interests of allparticipating groups, such as producers, manufacturers, processors, trade, consumers,certification/accreditation organizations and regulatory bodies, is a great challenge.

ISO 22000 is meant to be the answer.

How much does a seismic wave weigh?Sartorius balances used to measure ground movements

Mass is indirectly determined by measuringweight using a balance:

Force = mass + gravitational acceleration

During a weighing operation, one assumesthat the gravitational acceleration will notchange appreciably at the weighing location. Therefore, the weight measured is propor-tionate to the mass. Using a calculation fac-tor, the weight of the sample can be deter-mined in the desired unit, e.g., in grams.

Seismic waves cause the ground to constantlymove upward and downward – similar to theway an elevator accelerates and brakes. If aperson were to stand on a bathroom scaleinside an elevator and ride downward fromthe top floor, the scale would indicate lessweight while the elevator was accelerating.Conversely, if the elevator’s brakes wereapplied, a greater weight would build up untilthe elevator stopped, at which point theactual weight could be read on the scale.

Using a bathroom scale, we could only mea-sure the seismic waves of an earthquake at theepicenter at best. To register a strong long-distance quake, by contrast, we would need abalance with at least 1,000 times higher reso-lution and a quick measuring sequence.

From a statistical standpoint, an earthquakemeasuring at least seven on the Richter scaleoccurs 18 times a year. Surface waves fromthese quakes travel several thousand kilo-meters and change the general gravitationalacceleration at their destination, at times by a sinusoidal rate of more than 0.01 perthousand over a period of more than 10 sec-onds. These strong fluctuations last about 10to 60 minutes. But even earthquakes with a magnitude between six and seven on the Richter scale, which number about 130per year, can still leave clear traces at greatdistances.

into enlarging its product portfolio. Specialcommendation went to the formation of aninternational team of specialists consisting ofdevelopers and application technicians, onthe one hand, and cooperative alliances withother associated companies and academicinstitutions, on the other. These factors haveenabled the company to respond effectivelyand continuously to changing customerdemands by leveraging the targeted develop-ment of both equipment and technologies.

For Horst Nagel, Product Manager forMoisture Analysis Technology at Sartorius inGoettingen, Germany, this award has a veryspecial meaning: “Nothing of its kind has everbeen seen before in the moisture analysistechnology sector. The Frost & Sullivan Awardrecognizes our long-term strategic align-ments that keep an eye on what we haveachieved today, with a vision of what we still

aim to achieve tomorrow. Yet, our successwould never have been possible without themany years of ongoing commitment providedby members of our “Moisture Team” – allworking together in the areas of sales andmarketing, R&D, production and service atSartorius, Denver Instrument and Omnimark. My special thanks go to them, above all.”

At this point, we would like to cordially inviteyou to attend the official awards ceremony to be held on May 15, 2006, in the Sartoriuspavilion at the Achema trade show.

The bottom figure shows an excerpt of seismograms that were generated by theastatic horizontal seismograph at theWiechert seismological station in Goettingen,Germany, on January 8, 2006. This seismo-graph has a mass of 1,200 kg and has been inalmost uninterrupted operation for over100 years (www.erdbebenwarte.de). At12:34:52 CET (Central European Time), a 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in Greece, about 200 km (125 mi) south of Athens at anundersea depth of 37 km (23 mi).

Correlating well with these seismograms, thetop figure shows how the quake was regis-tered at Sartorius AG with the help of a modified semi-microbalance. On this LE225Dbalance, the internal calibration weights were replaced by a securely mounted weight, which served as a seismic mass. The weighingpan was removed, and the balance had a resolution of 0.01 mg over the entire weigh-ing capacity.

A 20-minute interval is shown, which beginsexactly at the time of the earthquake. It onlytook four minutes for the first seismic wavesto travel through the earth's interior andarrive in Goettingen 2,000 km (1,243 mi) away. The slower surface waves reached the balance7.5 minutes after the earthquake. The effec-tive seismic mass of the balance was 270 gand led to changes in the readout of up to3 mg between minimum and maximum.

That's how much the largest wave “weighed.”Since the measuring sequence was so fast, the display could approximately follow the changes in gravitational acceleration, which, according to the balance, reached0.003/270 = 0.00001 times the normal valueof 9.81 m/s2. Over a period of 5.2 s, an ampli-tude of about 0.05 mm can be calculated for the largest surface wave. A peak of only0.05 mm, which was replaced after about5 seconds by the next peak, thus led tochanges of up to a 100,000th of the weightfunctioning as the seismic mass.

If in the future you realize that your high-resolution balance suddenly cannot reachstability despite ideal ambient conditions, it is possible that the weight loaded on theweighing pan is acting as a seismic mass, and you may be witnessing a strong long-distance quake that you cannot even feel(you will find exact information athttp://earthquake.usgs.gov). But luckily, high-resolution, fast balances only have tobow to the forces of nature about 5 to20 hours a year, during which time, depend-ing on the load, resolution and location, they are unable to reach stability.

Sartorius Executive Board recognizeslifetime accomplishments – VDMA Medal of Service awarded to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. h.c. Manfred Kochsiek

On February 7, 2006, Prof. Manfred Kochsiek,Vice President of the Physikalisch-TechnischeBundesanstalt, PTB, the German NationalMetrology Institute, celebrated his retirementparty. As part of this ceremony held to honorhis lifetime achievements, Dr. Günther Maaz –member of the Executive Board of SartoriusAG and of the top level of the Board of Directors of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and President of the GermanScale Industry, AWA – conferred the highestaward of the VDMA, the Medal of Service anda certificate, to Prof. Kochsiek. Dr. Maaz heldthe laudation for Prof. Kochsiek, who alsosimultaneously celebrated his 65th birthday, and personally thanked the latter on behalf of the German federations of the engineeringand scale industry for his outstanding support.

The decision to award him a Medal of Servicewas based not only on Prof. Kochsiek’saccomplishments in the field of measurementand testing technology, but also on his out-standing achievements that he made at thenational, European and international levelsfor metrology. According to Dr. Maaz, Prof.Kochsiek laid the foundations for moderniza-tion of the basic technical and legal principlesin measurement technology, and broughtindustry and governmental institutionstogether at one table, and always providedimportant input for the umbrella associationof the European scale industry, CECIP (ComitéEuropéen des Constructeurs d’Instruments de Pesage). According to Dr. Maaz, Prof.Kochsiek excelled as a science manager of international renown, with scientificallyfounded and pragmatic, goal-oriented activi-

ties, combined with his high proficiency insocial skills. Under his leadership – first ashead of the PTB Mass Department “Masse”and later as Vice President of the PTB – thePTB proactively faced changing basic condi-tions and actively met new challenges timeand again. Thus, Prof. Kochsiek is exceptional-ly appreciated as an unbureaucratic serviceprovider, particularly by the German balanceand scale industry.

Last but not least of his accomplishments,Prof. Kochsiek was the initiator and enginedriving the success of the “AWA-PTB confer-ences,“ which, under his farsighted leadership, became a platform on which metrologicalissues and problems in weighing technologyare discussed among members of the Germanscale industry, the PTB, the verificationauthorities and the economics ministries ofthe German federal government and the German states.

As part of this farewell ceremony, an inter-national metrology workshop took place atthe PTB and was called “The Road to theGlobal Measurement System.“ Other speakerspraised Prof. Kochsiek, and wished him all the best in his well-deserved retirement. These included high-ranking persons, such asthe Director of the BIPM (Bureau Internation-al des Poids et Mesures) and the Presidents ofthe CIPM (Comité International des Poids etMesures), OIML (Organisation Internationalede Métrologie Légale), the IMEKO (Interna-tional Measurement Confederation) andWELMEC (Western European Legal MetrologyCooperation).

Gases in use all over the worldand around the clock……from Linde Gas

In 1902, Carl von Linde invented a method for separating air into its constituents, thuslaying the cornerstone for the company thathas been successfully expanding ever since. The largest division of Linde AG is Linde Gas,the leading industrial gas producer in Europe, particularly in Germany, and one of the keycompanies in this field worldwide. Through atightly organized network, it provides around 1.5 million customers in roughly 55 countriesaround the globe with gas in greatly differingamounts – from the 1-liter non-returnablebottle to 75,000-liter tanks or even on-siteproduction facilities installed directly on thecustomer’s premises.

Among their many uses, the custom-designedgases from Linde help make production eco-nomical in almost all technical areas: inmetal-working, construction and in the chemical and food industries, just to name afew. Linde cooperates closely with scientists, researchers and industry. With around18,000 employees, Linde Gas earns annualsales revenues of 4 billion euros (in 2005).
