2001 - 2008 – AES acquires IPL. The industry suffers significantly after a global economic slowdown and loss of investor post-Enron. AES restructures underperforming businesses, divests of others and focuses on excellence inoperations. AES recovers financially and begins to grow once more. The founders exit the company. We begin construction of a large generation project in Bulgaria and complete one in Spain. AES announces plans to invest $1Bby 2010 in the alternative energy sector including wind power, global climate change businesses and liquefied natural gas.

2009 - The collapse of the U.S. housing market causes aneconomic crisis that is second only to the Great Depression. Similar effects are felt in the rest of the developed world. EvenThe rapidly growing developing countries have sustained reductions in growth fueled by a reduction in demand for exports. Access to capital is closed to many businesses and, when available, is extremely expensive. Despite this environ-ment, AES has been successful in raising financing for severalinternational growth projects. That said, the company and its subsidiaries are taking measures to ensure success through this period.
