John Owen Toy (1944-2018) passed away July 22, 2018 due to complications from a stroke. John was born in Queens, NYC, and the youngest of three children. He is survived by his sister, brother- in-law, aunts, and several nieces and nephews. He spent many holidays in NYC and loved to tell stories about his healthy mother who lived to be 98 years old. John also had many friends. One of his bridge partners, Chris Urbanek, said “John always made his friends feel that they were an important part of his life.” John’s passion for bridge began in college. Although John loved sports, he felt bridge was a game he could really compete and excel in. He looked at bridge as a game of logic. After college, John continued playing bridge in Buffalo, joining the ACBL in 1968. He earned 9722.02 points and qualified for 99 invites to the prestigious blue ribbon pairs. John served as president of Buffalo Unit 116, president of District 5, and was a member of the District 5 Board of Directors. He was a co-chair of two national tournaments in Buffalo. John would probably say that his most rewarding passion was teaching social studies to high school students in the Buffalo Public Schools. With his booming voice, stories about historical figures, and his sense of fairness to all students, he was a favorite teacher of most students. At one graduation ceremony, the valedictorian called Mr. Toy a “Renaissance Man” for his knowledge and skills in his many endeavors. John was a wonderful teacher and inspired many students and bridge players as he was knowledgeable, understanding, and patient!

The Partnership Desk Located outside the Erie Ballroom in the hallway, is

staffed by James (Jim) Gullo and Dian Petrov. They have been busy making partnerships and will be happy to help you with yours. Please let them know when you are available, your approximate number of masterpoints, what event you’d like to play and how to contact you. We wish you a successful tournament. Please let them know if you have found a partner on your own.

You may find partners for this tournament or others on-line using the ACBL Partnership desk. To do so please log-in to the MyACBL Portal on the ACBL Partnership Desk: Sign-in and click on the “Partnership Desk” link in the left-hand menu and follow instructions. You may also find step by step instructions by clicking here

Prize Room The prize desk is located in the Superior Room. It

will be open Tuesday-Sunday according to the schedule on previous page. Prizes are available when a director has certified the results.

Prizes will be awarded for all section tops, for all strata, in all events, and for winners of each bra-cket in the KOs (if B or C wins a higher strat., the winner will receive only one prize for the highest strat). In pairs’ events which are scored across the field, the number of section top prizes awarded will be equal to the number of sections. Prizes will also be awarded to first overall place winners of pair events who do not have a section top.

On Sunday, Prize Room will be open one hour after the Swiss game ends. No prizes will be mailed.

Please help our volunteers by designating one person to pick up for the team if possible, to help with congestion at the desk. You can help us by knowing which event you won. Please be patient with the volunteers; they are bridge players like you.

Free Parking Vouchers & Tournament Stickers A parking voucher is needed each time you leave the parking lot. Players who are not guests at the hotel can obtain free parking vouchers at the specialty desk in the Hallway outside of the Erie Ballroom. (See “Hours of Operations”).
