FROM THE PASTOR

THE MASS INTENTION BOOK Mass intention requests are now being accepted through mid April.

Please call Melissa in the parish office.

The distribution of Blessed Ashes will be done in a manner different from our custom. Because of the virus circumstances, the Holy See has indicated that the practice of the Vatican and Church in Italy of sprinkling the ashes on the head of the recipient will be the common practice this year. After the priest or deacon blesses the ashes and indicates either “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” or “repent and believe in the Gospel” recipients will form lines and the minister will sprinkle the ashes in silence.

Sprinkling ashes on the head is biblical as it was a sign of penance. “Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were

assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth upon their heads.” (Nehemiah 9:1)

“Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long tunic in which she was clothed. Then, putting her hands to her head, she went away crying loudly.” (2 Samuel 13:19)

In baptism, we are washed clean from our original sin and anointed as priest, prophet, and king on the crown of the head. It is fitting that ashes, a reminder of our sin and baptism into death, be sprinkled on the crown of our heads because at Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, the conquering of sin and death, and baptism into life.

Because the blessed ashes symbolize our mortality and remind us to repent of sinfulness, in addition to the adults, ashes will be given only to children who are old enough to have received (or soon to be receiving) the sacrament of reconciliation. Although some parents may question it, the Church does not recognize the child’s ability to deliberately commit sin that is in need of repentance until the age of “reason” (age 7).

Congratulations to the children who had their first experience of God’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation this weekend! Please be attentive to the “Lenten regulations”. What may appear to be just imposed “rules” are actually pathways to spiritual discipline. They are not to be taken lightly. To deliberately violate them is to commit sin and ignore your need for spiritual growth. (See page 4.)

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. Notable during this Lenten season is that the Solemnity of Saint Joseph falls on a Friday. Because of this, there is not an obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 19, 2021, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, according to the norm of canon 1251.

6. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

7. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

THE ORDER OF MASS

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, (all strike their breast as they say:) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

FIRST READING | LEVITICUS 13: 1-2, 44-46

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE ORDER OF MASS

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

GLORIA

SECOND READING | 1 CORINTHIANS 10: 31—11:1

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “If someone has on his skin a scab or pustule or blotch which appears to be the sore of leprosy, he shall be brought to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests among his descendants. If the man is leprous and unclean, the priest shall declare him unclean by reason of the sore on his head.

“The one who bears the sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare, and shall muffle his beard; he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall declare himself unclean, since he is in fact unclean. He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 32: 1-2, 5, 11

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is remitted. Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes no guilt, in whose spirit is no guile.

To you I have acknowledged my sin; my guilt I did not hide. I said, “I will confess my transgression to the LORD.” And you have forgiven the guilt of my sin.

Rejoice in the LORD; exult, you just! Ring out your joy, all you upright of heart!

Brothers and sisters, Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God,

just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | LUKE 7:16

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE ORDER OF MASS

GOSPEL | MARK 1: 40-45

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning the him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest

and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

ARING IVING ERVING

On Valentine’s Day and World Marriage Day, it is appropriate to recall that our parish patron, St. Raphael the Archangel, is a patron saint of marriage and matchmaking. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael informs Tobiah that he will be engaged to Sarah. At this point, Sarah has already been married seven times, but the demon who possesses her killed each of her prior husbands on the wedding night. Raphael comes to the rescue of Tobiah and Sarah by teaching Tobiah to expel the demon from his wife by heating the liver and heart of a fish. When the demon, unable to stand the odor, leaves Sarah, it flees to the desert where Raphael subdues it completely by binding it. Raphael’s angelic intercession preserved Tobiah from being the eighth victim of the demon that possessed Sarah, and saved Sarah from the despair she felt from the loss of her first seven husbands and the associated darkness and suspicion in which she was cast. This story explains why those feeling called to married life ask St. Raphael’s intercession for finding a spouse, and why St. Raphael’s healing gifts are sought by married couples. Guided and blessed by St. Raphael’s protection, the grateful young spouses respond in a manner that can strengthen all marriages: They pray together. This passage from Tobit (8: 4-8) is a common reading at Catholic weddings: Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife, “My love, get up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us And to grant us deliverance.” She got up and they started to pray and beg that deliverance might be theirs. He began with these words: “Blessed are you, O God of our fathers; Praised be your name forever and ever. Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever. You made Adam and you gave him his wife, Eve To be his help and support; And from these two the human race descended. You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; Let us make him a partner like himself.’ Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine Not because of lust, but for a noble purpose. Call down your mercy on me and on her And allow us to live together to a happy old age.” They said together, “Amen, amen,” and went to bed for the night.

Happy

Day

On Sunday, February 14, at the 10:00a.m. Mass, three people from the RCIA Program will publicly declare their intention to become members of the Catholic Church. Through the Rite of Acceptance, they will formally become Catechumens as they prepare to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Please pray for Angel Wiley, Taylore Bickel, and Natalia Rivera-Silvia along with their families, sponsors, and catechists.

WINE, CHEESE, AND THE CREED Did you miss Fr. Alek’s interactive presentation on February 4? Go to the website or You Tube channel for the Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel and watch it on your own time. In Session Two, Fr. Alek breaks open, “I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.”

If you missed Session One, it is also available! Spend some time deepening your understanding of the Creed we Catholics profess, and gain a greater appreciation for the truth and beauty of our faith.

“YOU DUPED ME, O LORD” This sentiment, expressed in the Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 20, verse 7 A, expresses the sense of anguish and abandonment experienced by someone who is suffering from a substance abuse disorder and by those who love the sufferer.

This quote articulates the isolation and fear that is part of the life of an addict.

On Tuesday, February 16, we will look at Jeremiah, Chapter 20, Verses 7-13, and see how God, although perceived as absent and uncaring, is actually not just present, but also affirming and encouraging those who are suffering from a substance abuse disorder.

The presentation titled, “You duped me, O Lord,” will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Madonna of Jerusalem Church, 201 9th Street, Sharpsburg, PA 15215, and on Facebook live on our page, Addiction Recovery Ministry Pittsburgh.

It can also be viewed on our website starting on Wednesday, February 17, https://addictionrecoveryministrypittsburgh.org.

ARM offers a presentation focused on addiction and recovery the third Tuesday of every month.

A Holy Hour for Recovery is held every 2nd Tuesday of the month beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Madonna of Jerusalem Church. And every Monday at 1:00 p.m., Father Michael offers a brief reflection on addiction and recovery on Facebook live.

All are welcome.

WINTER IS THE SEASON FOR RECOVERY AND PREPARATION

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Take part on our vigil day:

Join our St. Raphael the Archangel Parish family during Lent at the annual vigil outside Planned Parenthood. Our parish has pledged to pray between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. We witness and pray peacefully for innocent preborn babies to have a chance to live, for women in crisis pregnancies to have the support they need to choose life, and for our government and society to work toward a culture of life in which the most vulnerable members are cherished and loved as our Creator loves them. We need to fill the entire four hour shift, and any amount of time you can give is appreciated. Please contact Laura at (412) 857-5356 or [email protected] to sign up for a time.

If you cannot attend our parish vigil, you can learn more and/or sign up for another time by visiting the Pittsburgh campaign:

ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND SCHOOL

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Now that our celebration of National Catholic Schools Week has ended, I would like to thank the faculty, staff and all our families, friends and parishioners who helped make our week so special. Special Thanks to Fr. Grecco and Fr. Alek for celebrating vocations with our students, to our PTG Board and our parent volunteers that helped make our celebration of Catholic Schools Week so special. We celebrated our faith with a beautiful Kick-off the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy, our Living Rosary, Fr. Grecco and Fr. Alek celebrating vocations with our students, and our Closing to Catholic Schools Week Mass, where our Middle School Students did a presentation of how St. Margaret of Scotland School exemplifies Faith, Hope and Love. At the closing Mass for Catholic School's Week, our students surprised Fr. Grecco by giving him a beautiful picture of St. Raphael the Archangel. Student Council sponsored a socially distant Bingo for our students, a service project, where our students made treat bags for Frontline Medical Workers, and daily dress down themes, (pajama, sports teams, decades, and color days). Seton LaSalle sponsored a Virtual Marching Band Assembly and a Virtual Trivia Bowl via Kahoot, where our Middle School Students competed against other local Catholic Schools. PTG sponsored an Ice Cream Social. We needed to come up with new and creative ways to celebrate Catholic Schools Week this year amidst the pandemic. We accomplished this through the dedication and support of our entire faculty and staff. Our Catholic Schools are truly special places where Faith, Excellence and Service are not only visible during Catholic Schools Week, but are on display daily.
