Cascella’s ship
Pietro Cascella (Pescara, 2nd February 1921 – Pietrasanta, 18th May 2008) was an italian sculptor and painter. He was the heir of his grandfather Basilio and his father Tommaso. He was very young when he started showing interest in painting, following his father’s teachings.
The fountain is formed by a rectangular pool made of Carrara marble, containing a stilyzed ship that remind the «galea», an old rowing boat.
It is intentionally inspired to the seafaring tradition of Pescara, but there are other interpretations that consider the sculptur a commemoration of the pains that Pescara’s prisoners suffered in the Bourbon fortress, while they were used as rowers on Spanish ships until 1859.
