How many times have you read this quote?

TODAY, WE WILL EXPLORE, DISCUSS AND PLAN STRATEGIES

WHICH WILL ENABLE YOU TO FULFILL THIS CHALLENGE.

TOTAL PARTICIPATION TECHNIQUES

What are Total Participation Techniques?

◦Discuss with a neighbor what you think TPTs are.

Total Participation Techniques…

◦ensure active participation and student engagement by ALL students.

◦provide constant

checks for understanding

◦provide you with effective

ongoing formative assessments

Good News!!Most of you are already using TPTs. Today, we will concentrate

on ensuring higher-order thinking through the use of TPTs.

Why actively engage students in the learning process?

◦A. to develop students who are not “listening objects”

◦B. to battle against the ever increasing dropout rate

◦C. to fight against boredom◦D. all of the above

ON-THE-SPOTTPT’S

“On-the-Spot” TPTs are activities which allow teachers to quickly gauge the depth of student learning.

◦1. Think-Pair-Share◦2. Quick Writes◦3. Quick Draws◦4. Chalkboard Splash

◦5. Processing cards

◦6. Similes◦7. Ranking◦8. Numbered Heads Together

◦9. Thumb Up/Down Vote

What do I need?

• Laminated light-colored paper

• Sock

• Dry-ease pen

• Index cards

• Laminated hundreds/ABC chart

• Guided note-taking templates

ACTIVITY

On-the-spot TPTs

1. Locate the TPT cards on your table.2. Divide into grade levels.3. Your grade level will be the “expert” at your selected TPTs.4. Brainstorm class scenarios that would be appropriate to using this TPT, including the HOT (Higher Order Thinking) extension.

3-5 Minutes

Grades Pre-K, K, 1: - Think-Pair-Share - Thumbs Up/Down Vote

- Quick Draws - Quick Writes

Grades 2, 3, 4: -

- Numbered Heads Together - Processing Cards

- Ranking - Chalkboard Splash - Similes

USING A POST-IT NOTE ON YOUR TABLES, PLEASE COMPLETE

THIS SENTENCE:“I THINK TPTS ARE ______________”

Model of Chalkboard Splash TPT

• Read your fellow teacher’s replies to the chalkboard splash.

• Discuss with your table mates, the following:

Similarities

Differences

Surprises

• Make a visual similar to the above chart to record

your table’s responses.

HOLD UPS

Response Cards

When a teacher uses response cards:

• Student participation INCREASES

• Student achievement INCREASES

• Disruptive behaviors DECREASE

Open your bags to explore the hold-ups provided.

Hold ups are interaction-based activities that use response cards

Selected Response Cards relate to a specific prompt or question.

How to ENSURE Higher-Order Thinking with Hold-

Ups◦ Provide students with an opportunity to explain their thinking, hear opposing responses, and come to their own conclusions through a revote.

◦Intentionally create and embed questions requiring higher order thinking. Students need to analyze and make connections.

◦Students need to practice defending their responses.

Reflect:Count off 1-3, form groups, and discuss

the following:• How much responsibility for demonstrating cognitive engagement do you place on your students?• Which of your students would most benefit from your consistent use of TPT?• What skills will you be teaching over the next few weeks? How do you envision yourself implementing TPTs with an emphasis on the HOT skills?

Return to your grade level to discuss your answers.

ANY SURPRISES? USE A TPT CARD TO EXPRESS YOUR ABILITY TO IMPLEMENT

TPTS TOMORROW.
