WEEKEND AND WEEKLY MASS

MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE

Whether the Weather Will be Warm or Wrainy? Most of you know that my parents live in Indiana, so we only get to spend time with them every few months. Since that is the case, I give them a call a couple of times a week just to check in to see how things are going. It is inevitable that the conversation at some point will turn to the weather (retired people love to talk about the weather!) We swap reports about what the weather has been like and how the lawn and gardens are faring. At this time of the year, especially with the hot weather, it is common to hear, “We could use some rain!” My parents have both flower gardens and a vegetable garden, so getting rain is important for them to flourish.

In the first reading today from Isaiah, we are reminded that the word of God comes to us like rain or snow. This provides a visual image that we can relate to because we can see the effects of rain on the earth. When the ground is baked hard from the summer sun and a storm produces a downpour of rain, it does little good because most of the rain just runs off to find the lowest spot. In order for rain to be beneficial, the ground needs to be in a condition that is ready to receive the moisture. The same can be said for us receiving the word of God.

If we are hardened, cynical, or bitter, the word of God will have a hard time providing a benefit for us. Much like the hardened ground, the message will simply bounce off of us and run away. But if our hearts are cultivated in the ways of God, the Word will provide abundant nourishment to help us grow and then we can help others to grow. I think it is easy in our current time of strife and uncertainty to become hardened to others and to God. If this is the case, detach and find some peace and some time with God. Be ready to receive God’s word!

Looks like another hot one! Deacon Mike

It has been almost one month since we have opened the church to the celebration of the liturgy. Our parishioners have gathered with reverence and in community, but most importantly with safety. In looking out over the congregation we see people who are glad to be present, glad to pray together and especially glad to receive Jesus. Many parishioners have commented on how excited they are to be able to receive Jesus again and to feel good coming to a safe environment. As a community, we take the safety of our parishioners very serious.

As a reminder, we have the following safety protocols in place: All people are asked to wear a mask Temperatures are taken of all who wish to attend Mass All people are asked to sanitize their hands before entering the worship space Social Distancing is enforced before, during and after Mass.

Not all people are able and comfortable coming to church to attend Mass. Please know we sure do miss you but more importantly we understand. When you do make the decision to come back, we want you to know we will be waiting. You will always have a place in the pews of St. Bernard.

If you are not able to come to church to attend Mass, you can participate through our facebook livestream. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/stbernardappleton

SIGN UP FOR WEEKEND MASSES IS NO LONGER REQUIRED AFTER JULY 12.

he’s ready to welcome us with open arms and carry us home on his shoulders.” Chris Stepien, Dying to Be Happy, Dynamic Catholic

FORMED

With current times as they are: the pandemic; unrest in our nation; conflicts of leadership; summer plans changed etc; many likely need to find the strength and power to put our trust in the God.

Refer to Lectio: Peter with Dr Tim Gray in FORMED. Season 1; Episode 3, “Faith Not Fear: Walking in Trust.” This continues with stories of Peter and the storms at sea. Dr. Gray takes you into the Gospel of Matthew and 4 scenes with Jesus speaking to the Apostles. Jesus will say, “Oh you of little faith.” Jesus has to jostle and challenge and push them to trust. We need to stretched in our faith of God. Jesus shows us lessons in the Gospel of Matthew. Events are ordered in this way that leads us to deeper meditation and reflection.

Do not be anxious about anything, but by prayer and petition offer these to God. Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness. Jesus challenges that God is your Father and He knows your needs. Be open to TRUST. Seek first, God’s will. The opposite of fear is faith. This is the challenge.........

How comforting is this episode. You might want to listen to more of these? Submitted weekly by a St. Bernard Parishioner
