POINTS OF INTEREST PARKING Welcome to the University of Notre Dame CAMPUS MAP DINING The University of Notre Dame welcomes you to our home—a 1,261-acre campus where a remarkable community lives and works, teaches and learns, and pursues excellence in many forms all year round. Let us share with you the special qualities of our campus in this atmosphere of hospitality and community spirit. See elsewhere on this map for information about parking and sights you may have come to see. People come here for academic, social, spiritual, and personal reasons, so the goals and questions vary widely. Some ways to find answers and next steps are: Ask the security person at the guard booth. For a list of helpful mobile apps, go to ND Molbile, m.nd.edu. Make the Eck Visitors Center, next to the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore on Notre Dame Avenue, your first stop. Visit the University website at nd.edu or call the University switchboard at (574) 631-5000. Ask others on campus; chances are they’ll welcome you and offer a knowledgeable answer. WHERE AM I? You are in Notre Dame, Ind., adjacent to the city of South Bend, which is part of a metropolitan area of more than 300,000 people. Notre Dame has its own post office and professional fire department, and it includes not only this University campus, but also the adjacent campuses of Saint Mary’s College and Holy Cross College. The private property on which the University stands includes 171 buildings, two lakes, two golf courses, and a Catholic cemetery open to members of the Notre Dame family. Our main entrance is at Notre Dame Avenue and Angela Boulevard. Our life as a community is integrated with the life of our neighbors and neighborhoods. South Bend’s downtown is about two miles to the south. Notre Dame’s presence extends to places throughout the metropolitan area—places like the Notre Dame turbomachinery research facility near downtown South Bend, and the Eddy Street Commons commercial-residential development. The Indiana Toll Road, U.S. Route 80-90, is at the western border of campus. Indiana communities, including Mishawaka, Granger, and Roseland, are close to our north and east. The Michigan state line is less than 10 miles to the north. MORE ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. This Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers began in France and is today a major international order serving societies and individuals through higher education, missionary work, and the staffing of parishes. Notre Dame was chartered by the State of Indiana in 1844. It was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious Trustees and Fellows. The University holds firmly to its Catholic identity and mission, and its statutes require that the president of the University be a Holy Cross priest. Notre Dame is truly an international university, with its student body of approximately 8,500 undergraduates and 3,700 graduate students drawn from all 50 states and some 90 countries. This is a residential university, with 80 percent of undergraduates living on campus in single-sex residence halls. Also in residence on campus is a community of priests and brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross, engaging in teaching, research, and a range of collaboration with people to enrich the worlds of academe and everyday life, educating both the mind and the heart. The priests live primarily in Corby Hall and Moreau Seminary, but members of Holy Cross and other religious orders live at the residence halls, often serving as rectors. The campus is designed primarily for pedestrians, encouraging safety and community spirit, so vehicle access is limited and monitored. Notre Dame’s faculty exceeds 1,100. These are among the finest scholars, researchers, and teachers in the world. Their vibrant contributions to the life of the mind and to human culture are supplemented by professional specialists, research fellows, librarians, and administrators. This is one of America’s leading undergraduate teaching institutions and is growing as the pre- eminent Catholic research university. The University has more than 135,000 alumni, many of whom participate in a worldwide network of Notre Dame clubs. Many of these alumni also come back to campus throughout their lives for reunions, football weekends, spiritual milestones such as weddings and baptisms, and for other reasons tied to the Notre Dame family. About one-quarter of undergraduate students are “legacy” students whose parent(s) attended the University. IN THE BASILICA, ask ushers about available tours, times of religious services, and hours for access to the museum. On your own, you’ll see many inspiring statues, relics, religious items, and, of course, exquisite artwork on the ceilings, in the stained glass windows, and more. Masses and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are offered daily. Please respect the quiet and dignity of this special place of worship. FROM THE BASILICA go to the Main Building, with the statue of the Blessed Mother standing atop the Golden Dome.
