Mrs Casey, Head of English Faculty
Mr Kay, Deputy Head Teacher Curriculum and Data
In particular, a lack of English or maths qualifications can have a significant impact on your future education and career path, so it’s hugely important to ensure you leave education with at least the basics.
The government is requesting all students who fail to reach the accepted standard in English or maths to continue studying up until 18. • National statistics show a staggering 40% of Year 11s don’t achieve an A*-C in English and maths. • 90% of those who resit won’t reach the desired grade by the time they’re 19.

Mathematical MethodsMathematical methods taught now in school are very different from those learnt by many parents at school. This can cause confusion when parents are trying to support their child at home.
• Ask your child to show you a similar problem from their classwork or on revision cards
• Ask your child to read the question out loud
• Try to stick to the methods taught in school wherever possible
• Ask your child to draw or make a model to visualise the problem
• Use the recommended websites for support
• Encourage your child to attempt homework on the day it is set so they can seek help from the teacher if necessary before the due date

What can you do?Don’t say things like ‘I can’t do numeracy or maths’, ‘I hated maths at school’ or ‘I can’t spell’ your child might start to think like that themselves.
Do talk about the numeracy in everyday life, and ask your child how they work out problems or questions.
Do supply interesting reading material at home. The internet, libraries and the college LRC all have engaging books, magazines and articles that are free to access.
Do read in front of your child. Seeing parents read has a very positive effect on children and young people.
Do praise your child for effort, rather than talent
Do encourage you child to persevere
Don’t dismiss reading as boring. It has a really negative effect on young people.
