Welcome from Professor Rocque Reynolds, Dean of Law

I am delighted to welcome you to the Thomas More Law School at

the Australian Catholic University (ACU). We welcome and

congratulate you on becoming a member of our school.

As a new law school developed in the 21st century, our aim is to offer

you a highly personalised and supportive learning environment. We

will strive to provide you with a solid knowledge of the law as well as

an understanding of the needs of our wider community, equipping

you to develop a fulfilling career in an increasingly dynamic global

environment. Throughout your law studies at ACU, we will

encourage you to pursue social justice, work for the common good,

engage in ethical practice and respect human dignity, and to do so in the context of rigorous

academic standards. We will guide you in these endeavours and lead by example.

The study of law can lead to a diverse range of opportunities in your professional and personal lives.

The path that you are now embarking upon can be challenging, intellectually stimulating and, at

times, a bit overwhelming. The Law Induction program will provide you with a foundation for success

upon which to build as your knowledge of the law develops.

Before the frenetic excitement and activity of the academic year begins, I encourage you to take a

moment to consider the contribution that you can make to the Thomas More Law School which you

now enter; you and your fellow members of the Melbourne law cohort will have the opportunity to

make a significant contribution to the development of the culture and environment of law at ACU. I

urge you to create and seize opportunities, broaden your perspectives, cultivate your sense of

responsibility to the community and expand your personal and professional networks. I hope you will

take the time to get to know the staff members of the School, who are keen to support you along your

journey.

I look forward to meeting you during the Law Induction and to sharing with you the unique experience

of learning law at ACU.

Overview of Law Induction

Welcome to Law Induction and to the beginning of an exciting legal education at Australian Catholic

University (ACU).

Law school and the legal profession are often depicted as very challenging environments. While we

in the Thomas More Law School generally agree with this popular depiction, we believe that

developing an understanding of the fundamental concepts and origins of law right at the start of your

legal education will equip you with skills and knowledge to draw upon throughout your law study and

career.

The activities within the Law Induction program have been specifically designed for you not only to

learn about the foundational themes of law, but also introduce you to ACU staff members, university

services, legal professionals and your classmates.

The core components of the Law Induction program are:

Participatory sessions to introduce legal concepts and prepare you for your first semester

Opportunities for you to engage with university staff and members of the legal profession

Social events to get to know others studying law at ACU

Some activities will be undertaken by all students together. Other activities, including the academic

sessions, will be conducted in smaller groups, similar to the setup of your law units.

To develop the skills necessary for success in Semester 1, you should attend all of the activities in

the Law Induction program.

What to bring to Law Induction

You don’t need to bring anything to Law Induction. Lunch will be provided on Day 2, and for lunch on

Day 1 there are many venues from which to purchase food and drinks both on campus and nearby.

Semester 1 Book ListLaw Induction is an excellent opportunity to ensure that you have all of the materials you need for

Semester 1 study.

At or before Law Induction, you should obtain copies of the following textbooks:

All first-year law students:

Catriona Cook, Robin Creyke, Robert Geddes, David Hamer and Tristan Taylor, Laying Down the

Law (LexisNexis Butterworths, 9th ed, 2015) for use in LAWS104 Legal Reading, Writing and Research

Philip Clarke and Julie Clarke, Contract Law: Commentaries, Cases and Perspectives (Oxford

University Press, 3rd ed, 2016) for use in LAWS105 Contract

LLB students and Graduate entry LLB students:

Penny Crofts, Thomas Crofts, Stephen Gray, Tyrone Kirchengast, Bronwyn Naylor and Steven

Tudor, Waller & Williams Criminal Law Text and Cases (LexisNexis Butterworths, 13th ed, 2016)

and Brianna Chesser and Graham Thomas, Criminal Law and Procedure Handbook (Thomson

Reuters, 2016) for use in LAWS106 Criminal Law and Procedure (Note: only graduate entry

LLB students will require this text in semester 1 of 2016. Double degree law students will study

LAWS106 in year 2)

Martin Davies and Ian Malkin, Focus: Torts (7th ed, LexisNexis, 2014) for use in LAWS206 Torts (Note: graduate entry LLB students only).

Students are required to have their own copy of the required textbooks (the ACU library will hold at

least one copy of each required textbook, but the library cannot ensure ready provision of textbooks

to all students in a unit).

Most law examinations at the end of the semester are ‘open book’, meaning that students are

permitted to bring up to three textbooks with them into the examination rooms.

Textbooks can be purchased from the ACU Melbourne campus bookshop located on the ground floor

of the Mary Glowrey Building (115 Victoria Parade), or may be purchased online at:
