UMAR/Group Home
The Mission of the Month is UMAR/Group Home. UMAR is an organization that was founded in 1983 by the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. The organization is dedicated to promoting community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, vocational and cultural enrichment opportunities. There are 21 group homes in North Carolina, and two of them are in Greensboro – the Bowden Home for women and the Westridge Home for men. There are 9 apartments and 3 art centers and one of the art centers is in Reidsville.
There is a group of us that continue to visit the Bowden Home on
Muirs Chapel Road once a month. We do crafts, sing songs, have fellowship and pray together. The ladies are so special! They really appreciate our coming to see them. Also this past fall we had a cookout with both the women’s and men’s group and in May we had a Pizza Party with both groups. In August quite a few of us go to Camp Grace at Camp Tekoa in Hendersonville, North Carolina. It is a camp for special needs adults. It is a wonderful weekend! Let me know if you would like to know more about the camp. We would love to have you join us!
The June Ridgerunner has more information about how UMAR
started. It has been a beacon of hope for many desperate mothers and fathers over the past 35 years. Your gift will continue to provide hope and comfort to all the participants and their families that UMAR serves.
Please consider making a gift today to help the story continue. And let me know if you would like to be a part of the group that goes to visit this special group of people!
