Reading List
To prepare you for the course, we recommend you buy and begin reading some or all of the following.
Bate, D (2009) Photography: The Key Concepts, London: Berg
Bull, S (2010) Photography, London:Routledge
Caruana, N and Fox, A (2012) Behind the Image: Research in Photography, Zürich: AVA Publishing
Cotton, C (2004)The Photograph as Contemporary Art, London: Thames and Hudson
Fox, A et al (2010) Langford’s Basic Photography (9th Edition), London: Focal Press
Warner Marien, M (2010) Photography: A Cultural History, London: Laurence King
Sontag, S (1979) On Photography, London: Penguin, 1979
Wells, L (2010) Photography: A Critical Introduction, (4th Edition) London: Routledge
Equipment & Materials Costs will vary according to the kind of work you produce. Staff will be able to advise you on how to pay reasonable prices for materials such as paper and film. It is recommended that you budget around £200–£500 for materials per year. It is possible though to work on a budget much lower than this.
Students on the course will be required to purchase certain items of equipment. Most equipment will be specified when you arrive, and additional items will be needed in some cases in later stages of the course. You should have the following items from the start:
– A4 ring binders – at least two to start off, with A4 paper for lecture / workshop notes
– Sketchbooks and workbooks (for collations of visual research)
– 35mm negative file sheets with A4 binder / folder
Course Costs
We recommend that you have your own 35mm camera with standard lens at least – this will be needed from the start of the course. The camera should be good quality but the simpler the better – Autofocus etc. is unnecessary. It must have manual exposure control. If of the DX code-reading type, the camera should allow modification of film speeds for precise work. Older models are generally more suitable and relatively cheap second-hand – good ‘big name’ makes such as Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon etc. are ideal.
Again, if in doubt wait for advice from tutors at the start of the course. As a UCA student you’ll have access to our equipment stores. The stores keep a wide range of photographic equipment, which is available for short-term loan. If you’re considering buying a DSLR it’s worth considering that our range of lenses available are Nikon fit. In terms of digital technology, the course at Farnham uses Photoshop on Apple computers.
If you’re considering an IT purchase, we recommend you wait until you’re enrolled at UCA. Apple has a UCA discounted store, so you’ll save around 10% on the standard prices for computers.
You should purchase both a USB memory stick and your own hard drive (500GB or larger is recommended) to move large files around.
Recommended suppliers include:
Firstcall photographic: firstcall-photographic.co.uk Web-based mail order company with a huge catalogue selling cameras, darkroom supplies and film as well as digital equipment and paper. No second-hand equipment.
London Camera Exchange: lcegroup.co.uk/index_group.php Long-established chain of camera shops with particularly good guaranteed second-hand cameras. Visit your local branch if possible.
Jacobs Photo Video: jacobsdigital.co.uk/index.php Despite the website name they do have healthy 35mm and medium/large format departments. Good range of new and used equipment.
Jessops: jessops.com Not really recommended as despite being probably the UK’s biggest photo retailer they have all but completely stopped selling ‘analogue’ (i.e. film-based) equipment, but the larger stores have second-hand departments and still stock film and paper.
Calumet Photo: calumetphoto.co.uk Provide discount cards for UCA students.
NB: The University has no financial agreements etc. with any of these retailers. Recommendations are based on staff and student experience.
There is a small art supplies shop on campus which can supply the smaller items required, such as craft knives, scissors, pens and pencils etc.
It does stock a limited range of photographic papers and films but you may find that you want to use specialist suppliers for some of your requirements.
Course Costs
VisitsThere will be, on average, two to three one-day study visits per term and approximately £50 should be budgeted for each of these. These are often visits where students and staff meet in London to visit exhibitions and sometimes to attend talks.
You’ll also have the opportunity to join a field trip abroad. This is likely to last for four to six days and be based in a city such as Berlin or Paris. The field trip usually costs around £300 and a further £200 approximately should be budgeted for expenses while on the trip.
