Residents’ Club

This is a good time to start thinkingabout the social life of the Hall – it’s inyour hands! The elected Residents’ ClubCommiee, supervised by the Wardenand Vice-Warden, runs the Hall Bar andorganises many of the social, sporting,and entertainment events in the Hall.

They also arrange the provision of thenewspapers, magazines, games, andsports equipment that you can borrowfrom Reception. Joining the Commieeis a great way to get to know people andlooks really good on your cv!

Elections will be held in October, so lookout for notices explaining how to join in.Think about seing up your own socialevents and clubs, even if you don’twant to join the Commiee; contact theWarden or Vice-Warden if you need

help or advice with any such ventures.

Connaught Hall bar

Run by the Commiee and staed byresidents, our friendly Hall bar oers awide range of alcoholic & non-alcoholicdrinks at very reasonable prices. Thereis also a pool table and table football.

 Aernoon tea

The Wardenial team will host aernoontea in the reception lobby on Sunday23 September and 30 September: anopportunity for residents & sta to meeteach other. Families are also welcome totake a break from moving in!

Welcome bufet

There will be a special buet supper inearly October - another chance to minglewith other residents and meet the sta.Look out for posters nearer the time.

Finally...If you have any questions or problems,please talk to a member of sta. Wewill try to help you to sort out anydiculties; but we cannot help if wedo not know there is a problem! Allthe sta wish you a very happy andsuccessful time here, and hope thatyou will quickly sele into ConnaughtHall as your home for the year. We lookforward to meeting you all.

We should like to extend you a verywarm welcome to Connaught Halland remind you about some importantthings you need to do in your rst fewweeks here.

In your room today...

Bedding pack

In your room, you will nd a set of bedlinen (sheet, pillow, pillowcase, duvet,and duvet cover); this is yours to keep.You are responsible for washing your

 bed linen; the Hall does not providea laundering service. Please note that

towels are not provided.

Mug

We have given you your own mugfor hot drinks. You must take this tothe dining hall at meal times as nocups or mugs are provided there. Youare responsible for looking aer andcleaning your own mug. You can buy areplacement from the General Oce ifyours is lost or broken.

Internet connectionYour room has a data socket for freeconnection to the University  system. You need a suitable cable (whichwe will provide – ask at reception ifthere is no cable in your room) anda 10/100 card on your computer.Full instructions are available from theBursar’s Oce. Report any problems tothe helpline on 020 7862 8092.

Remember to enrol at your college

Make sure you know where and whenyou have to go to enrol on your course.Check out your college’s freshers’ eventsas well as activities here in Hall.

Get to know Connaught Hall

Take a few minutes to look throughyour Residents’ Handbook, LicenceAgreement, and SupplementaryRegulations (you can download thesefrom www.connaught-hall.org.ukorwww.london.ac.uk/223; hardcopies areavailable from the General Oce). TheLicence Agreement and SupplementaryRegulations constitute your contract ofresidence in Hall.

The Residents’ Handbook explainsmany of the Hall’s procedures, includingwhere to nd help should you need it,and outlines our expectations of your

 behaviour. We particularly ask you to befamiliar with the re procedure and to

 be aware of at least two escape routes.

Register for a telephone account

You can already use your roomtelephone to receive any calls and tomake calls to internal extensions free of

charge (e.g. dial 8200 for reception).If you wish to make external calls oraccess the voicemail facility, you mustregister for a pay-as-you-go accountat the General Oce, where fullinstructions and details of call chargesare also available.

You can obtain your extension numberand direct-dial telephone number fromthe receptionist.

Meet the Warden’s team

The Warden, Vice-Warden, and SeniorMembers are resident members ofsta responsible for student welfare,discipline, and the community andsocial life of the Hall. The Warden is aprofessor at and the Vice-Warden isa medical doctor; their wardenial dutiesare therefore part-time appointments.

The Senior Members are postgraduatestudents who undertake their duties inHall on a voluntary basis.

All the team are here to oer supportand guidance in case of problemssuch as academic diculties, health oremotional issues, social concerns, anddisputes between residents (e.g. noisyneighbours). Feel free to approach themany time, or write to the Warden orVice-Warden via reception. A member ofthe team is on duty during evenings and

weekends to help in case of emergency.

Return your medical details form

You must complete the accompanyingmedical details form and return it to theGeneral Oce within 21 days.

We strongly advise you to register witha local (primary care doctor) whowill visit you at Connaught Hall if yourequire medical aention.

Read about your contents insuranceThe University has arranged basicpersonal property insurance for allresidents through Endsleigh, but not allyour possessions may be covered for alleventualities and you may need to takeout additional cover; read the insurancedocuments carefully (www.blockhalls.co.uk). All insurance claims and queriesshould be made direct to Endsleigh.

Later this month...

Check your invoice

You will soon receive an invoice foryour accommodation fees. Your feesfor the year are divided into three. Youmust pay the rst instalment withinthe rst two weeks of October. You can

pay by cash, cheque, or credit card inthe General Oce during oce hours.If you arrived before the ocial startof your college term, you will receive aseparate invoice for that period.

It is important that you tell the DeputyBursar immediately if you are likely tohave problems paying your fees on time:we can usually nd a way around anyproblems – but only if you talk to us! Wewill not be so sympathetic if you fail tokeep us informed.

Collect your Hall ID card

Once we have received your deposit,passport-size photographs, and medicaldetails form, we will issue you with aHall card. From mid-October youmust show this card every time you eatin the dining hall, otherwise you willnot be served; you also need your  card in order to request a packed supperand to claim a food rebate duringvacation periods (for more details, see

your Residents’ Handbook).

Join the Facilities Committee

We shall soon invite applications formembers of the Facilities Commiee,where you can make suggestions aboutcatering, housekeeping, health & safety,maintenance, and other issues. Lookout for notices for details or [email protected].
