A MESSAGE FROM FR. MURRAY
This week we celebrate that most romantic of holidays, St. Valentine’s Day. It is a day that reminds us of the importance of shared love and the joy that comes from the mutual love that couples have for one another. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of marriage in our Church and in our society. We name one of our sacraments of adulthood the Sacrament of Marriage. There is a grace that is given to couples as they start their lives together. We celebrate a lot of weddings here at Mary, Queen of the Apostles Parish. Couples are drawn here by the beauty of the churches and the attraction of Salem as well as the advantage of having hotels that are walking distance from our churches. It is not uncommon to see brides and grooms and their wedding parties walking across the street to the Waterfront Hotel or up to the Hawthorne for their receptions after the ceremonies. The Peabody Essex Museum also allows couples to have their receptions in the museum, so if one does not want to dance there is always art to look at. I am proud of the wedding ministry that we have here. Couples are welcomed by the wedding ministry team of Martin and Stacey Walsh, and with our music ministry we are able to provide a wonderful, prayerful experience for each couple and their families and guests. They can receive marriage preparation classes here and meet with Angelique Bolduc to plan the ceremony of their dreams. We will be preparing a space in the lower church at IC for brides to come and do their last-minute preparations. We have scheduled 18 weddings so far for 2019 and expect a few more will trickle in before the year is through. One of the definitions of marriage is that it is a lifelong relationship that is faithful and procreative. It is open to the possibility of cooperating with God in bringing life into the world. Love is what God is, and He wants our good, so for married couples to will the good of the other and their family is what marriage is really about. We can say about marriage that each is asked, among other responsibilities, to help one on the journey to heaven. That means that couples must love one another with this in mind. I think of my parents on this day, because February 14 is also my mother’s birthday. She was a lifelong conservative Republican, while my father was a picket-line walking (when necessary) union Democrat. My brother reminds me sometimes that around election time we could warm our food by putting it between their arguments. But we knew that, as hotly as they argued about politics, they loved one another and us. (Maybe they learned this at their marriage preparation classes!) We want to wish all married couples a happy and loving Valentine’s Day. May the love which you first professed on your wedding day continue to grow and deepen. Peace, Father Murray I apologize to those who were cold at IC a few weeks back. The bad news is that the heat went out (we're not
sure why), but everything is working again. And at St. James, a problem with a new motor caused the heat to shut off.

COFFEE AND
CONVERSATION Join us for coffee, conversation and cake on the second Sunday of each month after the 9:00 Mass at Immaculate Conception church. Bring a friend or make a new one, and carb-load while you’re at it! All are welcome. See you there, Sunday Feb. 10 at 9:45 AM!
GIVING ONLINE HELPS OUR PARISH When a winter storm comes on a weekend, it leads to a lower collection that can cause problems with parish budgeting. To help the parish avoid these problems, you can sign up for online giving through WeShare. Online giving allows you to automatically give to the parish on a schedule. If you’re not signed up to give online, please consider signing up for it. You can sign up here: www.tinyurl.com/MQOAchurchgiving. Thank you for your continued generosity!
SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Salem will be holding our monthly collection this weekend, February 9 and 10, and will be at the church doors after every Mass. During the last month, we were blessed to receive $10,980 from our collection boxes and many very generous benefactors. Through your gifts, our volunteers were able to bring God’s love and mercy to over 50 families, providing $2,632 in food vouchers, $942 for utilities, $3,548 in rent, and $1,826 for other bills. We also provided supplies for a Christmas meal to 48 families, Christmas plants to 36
homebound people, and two meals at Lifebridge. In the Gospel next week, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that “whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.” Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you can show your love for our Lord and your love of your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and frightened. We gratefully acknowledge your generous contributions, which help the needy of Salem.
MARDI GRAS PARTY Before you give up sweets for Lent, join us to celebrate Mardi Gras! Our Youth Ministry is throwing a fun dinner to bring us all together for a fun night, and to raise funds for our Youth Group. Great food, great people, great fun! Plan to join us at 7:00 PM at St. James church hall on Saturday, March 2. Tickets are available at the parish office and will be available for $15.00 after Masses in the coming weekends. For information: call or email our parish offices.

Finally, parishioners are reminded that if they are ill or suspect they are ill with a contagious illness, they are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation.
