Sheffield’s population swellsat this time of the yearwith the new academic

year starting at the Universitiesand a whole new army of freshersjust learning what is where in theCity. If you are one of those freshers, welcome to Sheffield! This littlearticle is designed to give you ahead start in finding places toenjoy good beer. So, University of Sheffield firstup. You may have not beentempted to leave the actualcampus yet as there is plenty ofdecent ale there to be enjoyed. The Interval Cafe Bar in theUnion offers a range of cask aleson handpump, mainly from localbreweries as well as a reasonablyinteresting bottled selectionwhilst next door in Bar Onethere are some of the more wellknown national brands. TheInterval has a weekly mini beerfestival showcasing a specificbrewery and is also involved withthe Union’s annual beer festivalwhich takes place in May with arange of over 50 different beersand also a big choice of cider.Elsewhere on the University ofSheffield campus is the University Arms pub, a traditionalvenue with a proper beer gardenoffering real ales, cider and homecooked food.Venturing out into the CityCentre, just off Glossop Road onVictoria Street is the Bath

Hotel. This is an old fashionedboozer with two drinking roomslinked by a corridor, a woodenkiosk bar and artdeco tiling. It ishowever operated by Thornbridge Brewery offering a rangeof craft beers including a decentchoice of real ales. AnotherThornbridge venue nearby isDada on Trippet Lane which is a‘cooler’ kind of venue, still withgreat beer and the bonus ofentertainment some nights. Ifyou are visiting Dada the Dog &Partridge over the road is alsoworth a visit.Another traditional pub which isusually a favourite with engineering students and lecturers isthe Red Deer. This is a comfyand friendly pub with a goodrange of ales and ciders, alongwith home cooked food. There isa programme of events held hereincluding live music, quiz nightsand film geek nights.

Once you hit the bright lights ofWest Street and Division Streetthere is lots of effort to lure youin some of the bars to try dubiousshots, industrial lager and otherbooze that isn’t really for theconnoisseur, however there isstill good beer to be had. TheWick at Both Ends, CommonRoom, Bungalows & Bears,Old House, Frog & Parrot,Great Gatsby, DevonshireCat, Swim Inn and BenjaminHuntsman all have beer worthdrinking. Also just near the end of DivisionStreet is Henry’s bar. Not onlyis this quite a grand place, thebeer is very reasonably priced .By the time you read this the newbrewery next door should havebegun production with beersbranded under the AardvarkBrewery name. Next door to themain Henry’s bar will be theBrewhouse bar where you can

see the beer being brewedthrough internal windows! For the Sheffield Hallam University student there is no craftbeer to be had in the Union, caskor otherwise! Just as well thereare some good pubs and barsnearby! The Rutland Arms onBrown Street (on the corner withthe brown and yellow tiledfrontage) is a traditional pub thatis young at heart with a greatchoice of beers and ciders, homecooked food and staff that if youare friendly to them you may endup best mates with. Possibly. Thepub also has an outside drinkingarea and chocolate brownies onthe bar. One word of warning ifyou are putting songs on thejukebox, do take note of thebanned music blackboard…The other must do pub nearHallam is the Sheffield Tap,located on platform 1B of the

railway station (main entrancefrom the street is just to the leftof the main station concourse). The Tap, which describes itself asa world beer freehouse, is acomplex of old Edwardianrailway refreshment rooms thathave been restored, the mainroom has the bar with 10 real alesplus a selection of specialist craftkeg beers, Czech lager and fridgesbursting with bottled beers fromaround the world. The othersignificant room contains a microbrewery which brews beersalmost exclusively for theSheffield Tap, York Tap, EustonTap and the other bars owned bythe same company. Also offering decent beer in thearea is the Showroom CafeBar, Howard (Marstons beers),Old Queens Head (Thwaitesbeers), Red Lion and Roebuckamongst others.

Finally, for students at eitherUniversity, the tram routetowards Hillsborough and the120 bus route towards Fulwoodoffers access to some good pubs.On the 120 you can visit Abbeydale Brewery’s pub, theRising Sun and the York inBroomhill amongst others. Onthe yellow/blue tram route alightat Shalesmoor for the KelhamIsland real ale circuit, alight atLangsett for the HillsboroughHotel (home to Wood StreetBrewery) and Bamforth Street forthe New Barrack Tavern, operated by Castle Rock Breweryof Nottingham this often hostslive entertainment at the weekend such as music and comedy, with occasional festivals held onthe beer patio! The 120 bus offersa student fare of 80p a ride, thetrams don’t do a student fare(other than the Unirider seasonticket) but the all day unlimitedtravel ‘Stagecoach Dayrider’ticket at £4 can prove good value. One more thing if you are astudent at the University ofSheffield and like good beer, dojoin the Real Ale Society. Aswell as being a good social bunchthey will organise trips to goodpubs, beer festivals and brewerytours that you might nototherwise discover.Last year they also brewed theirown beer at Blue Bee Brewerywith a local MP which got put onthe bar in the Houses ofParliament and society membersgot invited to London for a pint!Sheffield CAMRA will be doingjoint events now and again overthe year and don’t forget societymembers qualify for discountedCAMRA membership via theaffiliation scheme.

Acorn

September has proved abusy month for Steel City.Dave started the month

with another trip to Raw atStaveley, along with Chris andRobin from the Shakespeare, andAntoni from Sardinian microbrewery Trulla. The beer, aptlynamed Four Horsemen of theHopocalypse, is a Zero IBU(theoretically at least!) IPA,brewed with no bittering hops buta massive 10kg of Chinook, Citraand Summit at flameout, givinga huge grapefruit and tropicalfruit flavour and aroma. Look outfor it in selected Raw stockists...A week later Dave and Gazzabrewed for the first time at theirnew home, Toolmakers. The brewis named CommunicationBreakdown, to mark the end of3½ years brewing at Little AleCart, and appropriately enoughfor Steel City is very pale and veryhoppy! Summit at First Wort andMagnum at boil combine to give142 IBU, then after flameouthuge amounts of Amarillo and

Galaxy combine to give melon, peach and citrus flavours, toppedup with extra Galaxy in thefermenter just to be sure!Communication Breakdown willbe appearing in the Shakespeareand the Rutland, as well asNottingham and SheffieldCAMRA beer festivals. This isalso Steel City's fourth anniversary beer how time flieswhen you're having fun...Finally, Dave and Shazz planneda brew at the excellent NorthRiding brewpub in Scarborough,a 6% 200IBU IPA. As it is theNorth Riding's 200th brew, thename CC was chosen, now if onlythe brewers could think of anygood hops beginning with 'C'...Steel City have at last, thanks togreater capacity at Toolmakers, started bottling their beers. 72bottles of In The NightsideEclipse were produced as a trial, and were immediately snappedup by Cotteridge Wines inBirmingham (a fantastic offlicense!), and so hopefully at least72 bottles of each brew will nowbe available, most likely viaCotteridge Wines and morelocally a new bottle shop openingin the new Moorfoot marketbuilding.

The Anglers Rest inBamford is still aiming tobecome the first

community owned pub in theHigh Peak, after it was threatenedwith closure. By midAugust, the£180,000 minimum purchasetarget had been exceeded and theBamford Community Society(BCS) were also successful intheir application to move thelocal Post Office into the AnglersRest as part of the CommunityHub project. However, on 20th.August 2013,the group was contacted by thepub owners, Admiral Taverns, tobe told that there was anotherbuyer and it was a contract race.A day later, Admiral Taverninformed BCS that they hadexchanged contracts with a thirdparty, at a selling price of £275k.BCS had understood that theLocalism Act gave protection for6 months from a purchase by athird party. However, this is notthe case. Admiral Taverns haveassured that that the pub wouldcontinue and as such it can besold to a third party. At this point,BCS were devastated. Thebuilding had seemingly beenbought by someone who hasnever run a pub. However, with publicity for thevillagers' plight growing bothlocally and nationally, AdmiralTaverns changed their stance ina statement issued on Friday 6thSeptember. They announced thatthey will rescind the sale of thepub to the developer and sell itinstead to the people of Bamford.

The informationwe need can be anything from theopening times, when food isserved, what facilities they haveright through to the details of thelicensee, pub ownership and theirtie, not to forget the essentialdetails of what regular real alethey serve and how many guestales they have on. Uptodatephotos of the pubs are alsoneeded. What is absolutely crucial is thatwe have every single pub thatserves real ale logged on the site.We require your assistance in

keeping our records updated andand to make them as comprehensive as possible. This willhelp promote our pubs to visitorsand locals alike, hopefully encouraging more people to go outand support these wonderfulassets. If you would prefer to use yourmobile while out and about goodnews; the site is now set up towork on mobile browsers andmake the process simple.
