ANNOUNCING Catechetical Sunday 2016 will be

celebrated on September 18th and will focus on the

theme “Prayer: The Faith Prayed.” Our

Catechists will be formally commissioned that day

during the 10:00 o’clock Eucharistic

Celebration. Catechetical Sunday will be a

wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that

each of us plays, by virtue of Baptism, in

handing on the faith and being a witness to

the Gospel. It is an opportunity for all to

rededicate themselves to this mission as a

community of faith.

My dear Parishioners,

This weekend straddles the national conventions of the two

major political parties in this country. Each provides citi-

zens with a “platform” for the future efforts of the party and,

hopefully, the country at large. The platform contains infor-

mation that should be helpful to citizens as they discern the

direction they want the country to go in. and cast their ballot

in November. While many citizens are registered as mem-

bers of one party or another, the number of “Independents”

is increasing, an indication surely of independence but also

of uneasiness with the performance of either major party.

To a certain degree, a Christian citizen must always remain

independent, not necessarily in the political sense, but in the

sense that she/he follows their conscience. The Catechism

of the Catholic Church reminds us that “Conscience is a

judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes

the moral quality of a concrete act that she/he is going to

perform, is in the process of performing, or has already

completed.” We are bound to follow faithfully what we

know to be just and right. (no. 1778) This is no easy task,

given the current political situation, but it is not impossible.

Faithful Citizenship, a statement issued by the U.C. Confer-

ence of Catholic Bishops, provides guidance for Catholics

as they evaluate platforms and candidates for office and

discern how they are going to vote. (Copies of Faithful Citi-

zenship will soon be made available for parishioners.)

Catholic social doctrine is based on four main principles:

the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidi-

arity, and solidarity. Pope Francis reminds us in The Joy of

the Gospel that “an authentic faith...always involves a deep

desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this

earth somehow better than we found it.” More on this as

we move toward November… —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

P. Alberto, C.P.
