SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD JANUARY 1ST, 2017

As we come to an end of 2016 and welcome in 2017, I want to take this

opportunity to thank everyone for your contributions toward the growth

and development of our Parish over the past year. I am particularly grateful

to all who so faithfully volunteer your talents and time to the celebration of

our liturgical and educational ministries, and to our outreach ministries to

the sick, the homebound, and the poor people of the street. You are a

marvelous blessing to the whole community! It is a privilege to

serve you. May we together embrace the opportunities and chal-

lenges of this New Year, and with the help of our gracious

God, continue to deepen our faith life and expand our ministries

within and beyond the Parish.

On a personal note, I know Fr. Alberto joins me in thank-

ing you for the many cards and gifts, good wishes and

nourishing morsels you have showered upon us

during this beautiful Christmas Season. Wishing

you abundant blessings in 2017,

—- Fr. Jerome, C.P.

My dear Parishioners,

What a glorious way to celebrate the first day of the New Year—

by honoring Mary, Mother of God, and praying with her for the

blessings of peace throughout the whole world! This is the oldest

of all our Marian Feasts, going all the way back to the year 431

when the Council of Ephesus declared Mary the “Mother of God”.

She was declared such in order to clarify the identity of Jesus—that

he was and is true Son of God as well as true Son of Mary. As

always, Mary directs us to her Son.

Today is also special because it marks the 50th Anniversary of its

being declared a World Day of Prayer for Peace by then Pope—

now Blessed—Paul VI. Christians everywhere are encouraged to

observe this first day of the New Year by praying for peace on this

earth of ours. Our present Holy Father Francis, in his message for

today, tells us that “Nonviolence is a Style of Politics for Peace.”

He links the brokenness of the world to the brokenness of so many

families throughout the world. Reminding us that Jesus was born

into and lived in violent times, Pope Francis writes: “Yet he

(Jesus) taught that the true battlefield, where violence and peace

meet, is the human heart.” He goes on to say that if we wish to be

true followers of Jesus, we must embrace his teaching abut nonvi-

olence. He quotes Benedict XVI as saying: “For Christians, nonvi-

olence is not merely tactical behavior but a person’s whole way of

being, the attitude of one who is so convinced of God’s love and

power that he or she is not afraid to tackle evil with the weapons of

love and truth alone.” Pope Francis tells us that such a way of life

must be taught and modeled in our families where “spouses, par-

ents and children, brothers and sisters, learn to communicate and to

show generous concern for one another, … where conflicts are

resolved not by force but by dialogue, respect, concern for the

good of the other, mercy and forgiveness. From within families,

the joy of love spills out into the world and radiates to the whole of

society.”

While reading through this powerful and timely Message of Pope

Francis for the Celebration of the 50th World Day of Peace,* the

melody of that familiar hymn kept swirling through my head: “Let

there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. … the peace that

was meant to be … With God our creator, family all are we. … Let

us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with

me, let this be the moment now….” A Blessed and Peaceful

2017 to you! —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

SANTA MARIA,

debe urgir ponernos frente a Dios.

y expandiendo nuestros ministerios dentro y

- P. Jerome, C.P.

Muchas Gracias...
