Respect Life Sunday September 2, 2016

Moved by MERCY

We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been

shown to us. Pope Francis

My dear Parishioners,

Today, as we observe Respect Life Sunday, we are six Sun-

days away from national elections, and it is not too early to

begin, if we have not already done so, reflecting on the kind

of national leadership we want to have for the next four

years. That leadership includes most certainly the presiden-

cy but also the House and Senate and on down the line to

the local level. There is much to reflect on and pray over

during the coming weeks.

As Christians, we have a serious responsibility to participate

in the electoral process because, as Pope Francis has stated,

politics “is one of the highest forms of love, because it is in

the service of the common good.” While competing politi-

cians offer different notions of what the future should be,

Christian citizens should involve themselves in the political

process not primarily as partisans but as Christians. How do

we do so in this highly polarized society of ours? By allow-

ing, as Fr. Lawrence E. Mick puts it, “ the divine vision of

reality to influence our vote rather than ideology or self-

interest.” Prayer and discernment aid us in this, but fortu-

nately, we have been given two very practical guides: one is

the statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops titled Forming

Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, available online at

www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/

index.cfm. The other is based on the teachings of Pope

Francis on current issues: A Revolution of Tenderness: A

2016 Election Pope Francis Voter Guide which you can

download from http://popefrancis16.com/2016/03/17about.

The latter covers such topics as Life & Creation, Immigrants

& Refugees, The Environment, The Economy, Racial Jus-

tice, Global Peacemaking, and Religious Freedom. Today,

you will receive a flyer containing a précis of A Revolution

of Tenderness. Be sure to read it and then go online for the

full Voter Guide. You won’t regret it.

—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

ales: 1.

¿Y cómo voy a entenderlo si nadie me guía?

(Hc 8,30-31).

ericordia Espirituales. Tratemos de reflexionar sobre estas

tres que hemos compartido.
