My dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord Jesus with Matthew’s dramatic gospel account of the visit of magi from the east to the Child Jesus in Bethlehem. Of the synoptic Gospels, Mark doesn’t even speak of the birth of Jesus, and Luke reveals much about this momentous Event, including the visit of the shepherds to the cave in Bethlehem, but only Matthew tells the story of the visit of the strangers from the east bearing gifts for the Divine Child. The word “epiphany” signifies a sudden recognition of something that had previously evaded us. When we speak of the visit of the magi to the Christ Child as an epiphany, it signifies the manifestation of Jesus to the world beyond Judaism, with its implication that Jesus came as savior of everyone in the world. There are so many fascinating aspects of this story, each with its own message. I would like to mention just one: the magi were seekers who overcame, with God’s help, every obstacle in order to reach their goal: the hardship of a long and treacherous journey, the disappearance of the star when they entered Herod’s court, the cunning attempted manipu-lation by that jealous king. But their persistence was finally rewarded when they arrived at the simple home of the Holy Family and presented their gifts to the Divine Child. Like the magi, we are all journeyers, seeking Christ, each bearing the gift of self. Where will we find him this year of 2019; in contemplation, yes, in the Eucharist, most assuredly, in our neighbor, let us hope so! Have a blessed New Year, filled with “epiphanies”! —Fr. Jerome, C.P.
