Increased Access to goods and services is the key to prosperity for people, businesses and nations

The independent research firm SRI found that as the level of Access increased, so do the opportunities for people. Conversely, when Access decreases, so does opportunity.

6 Stakeholder Research Analysis

Access improves the overall quality of life

Without a market to sell their baskets, the weavers of Rwanda lived an impoverished life

Because of the Access provided by Macys.com, FedEx and Fair Winds Trading, traditional hand crafted baskets can be brought to markets worldwide– With Sales topping $1.5M (US) by

2007, more than 2,500 weavers now earn nearly twice the national average income in Rwanda

7 Stakeholder Research Analysis

As countries such as China open up to new businesses, economies become more developed

1981, East Asia:– In the world’s poorest region 80% of the

population lived on less than $1.25 per day

As of 2005 in the same region:– Largely due to the reduction of poverty in

China, the number of individuals living on less than $1.25 has decreased to less than 20%

Access creates opportunities and solves problems in the marketplace

FedEx uses Access to provide a solution for a customer.

– chumby : a device that looks like a touchscreen iPod crossed with a leather-clad beanbag. It flashes Facebook updates, Internet radio playlists and just about any digitized information.

– The devices are manufactured in China and shipped via FedEx—from Shenzhen, China to Hong Kong to Anchorage to home. People can watch via FedEx tracking number their order in transit. Devices are made to order.

– Chumby owns no factory, no warehouse and no supply chain services. They depend on facilities and services in China and shipping from FedEx.

9 Stakeholder Research Analysis

Access creates opportunities and solves problems in the marketplace

Greater Access allows FedEx to expand into new markets.– The greater accessibility of China to the rest

of the world Our Guangzhou, China hub = connectivity to

some 400+ cities on mainland China. The Pearl River Delta, in which our hub is

located, = major artery to European and North American consumers.

– NAFTA enabled FedEx to expand its services into Canada and Mexico and we are still building on that.

Last year, we added domestic service within Mexico.

In Canada, we launched our FedEx SmartPost service, which delivers high-volumes of low-weight packages to residences.

Greater Access can help solve a future problem or create a future opportunity.

– Aerovax: vaccination by a fine spray that’s inhaled instead of use of needles.

– Compared to needles, the spray is safer, more cost-effective and less painful. It’s a big plus

for swine flu vaccinations.
