Weekly Halachah—Parshas Vayeishev R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
If a man will not be home at the proper time of lighting, should he rely on his wife’s lighting? A woman may light on behalf of her husband, exempting him from his obligation to light. However, the man should still see Chanukah candles, personally. Therefore, this man should light upon arriving home; ideally, someone else should also be awake for the late lighting. If the family normally lights only one chanukiah, then the man should state explicitly that he is not relying on his wife’s lighting that night. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 676:3, 677:3; Mishneh Berurah 677:14; Aruch haShulchan Orach Chaim 676:7; Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 5:43:1; Mishneh Halachos 15:207)

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS VAYEISHEV BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (37:1) “Yaakov lived in the land (eretz) of his father, in the land (eretz) of Canaan” – why say “eretz” in this verse twice? Second Aliyah: (37:15‐17) Yosef eventually finds his brothers in a place called Dosan; why does the Torah bother to tell me the story of how he got directions from a “man” (ish)? Third Aliyah: (37:25) Why is it relevant that the brothers sat down to eat bread after selling Yosef? Fourth Aliyah: How could the righteous Yehuda get mixed up with (what he thought was) a prostitute? Fifth Aliyah: Compare 38:1 with 39:1; why is it relevant that both Yehuda and Yosef “went down,” and what is the difference between their respective descents? Sixth Aliyah: (39:20) Wouldn’t you think that adultery and/or rape was a capital offense in ancient Egypt – why did they imprison Yosef instead of putting him to death? Seventh Aliyah: Where in their respective dreams did Yosef see that the wine steward would live and succeed while the baker would be executed?

LEIL LIMUD
Leil Limud is a Friday night Oneg in our community when several shiurim simultaneously take place throughout the neighbourhood. The shiurim are given by BAYT members and are hosted in the homes of shul families. This brings together friends and neighbours to learn Torah and enjoy the splendour of Shabbos in small, heimish, and intimate settings. The three dates for Leil Limud are:
January 20, 2017 Parshas Shemos February 10, 2017 Parshas Beshalach March 3, 2017 Parshas Terumah
To host a Leil Limud in your home or to deliver a short shiur, please contact Rabbi Spitz at [email protected] or at 905‐886‐3810 ext. 119

BOOKS IN THE TURK FAMILY BAIS MEDRASH

Our Effort to assist in the rebuilding in Israel
continues!
Recently, a series of deliberately set fires raged across Israel displacing tens of thousands of people and causing enormous damage to hundreds
of homes, buildings, parks and forests.
Now, BAYT together with Mizrachi Canada is coordinating an emergency appeal to help repair and rebuild a special place destroyed by fire ‐ the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva of Haifa.
As fire spread, students from the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva ran to rescue children in the nursery located on the first floor of their building. They then tried to save holy books from the burning Yeshiva. Unfortunately, it was too late. The Beit Midrash together with hundreds of holy books were destroyed in the blaze.
For many years the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva served as an important bridge between all types of Jews living in Haifa. It's a place where both religious and secular felt welcome. The Yeshiva also provided military preparation programs, preparation for new brides and grooms, as well as marriage counselling.
Unfortunately, this place of happiness and blossoming creativity is now in ruins. But with your help, we will ensure the Yeshiva is rebuilt and restored. Our goal is to raise $70,000 towards this effort. Please give generously!
You can donate through BAYT toward this critical initiative. Donate either diectly online at www.bayt.ca/payment.php and select Community Liason Sponsor or call 905‐886‐3810 ext. 133
