Art Changes The World

Artists play a key role in shaping the world around us.

Art can make a powerful statement about what is going on in the world – for example, highlighting issues such as education and immigration, or the impact of social media.

Using their talent, artists express their ideas & opinions. This can challenge and shift the way we look at the world.

Shepard Fairey is an American street artist, graphic

designer, illustrator, and founder of OBEY Clothing who emerged from the skateboarding scene, as well as a political activist. He became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election for his Barack Obama ‘Hope’ poster.

In the last US Presidential election, Shepard Fairey’s art celebrated America’s diversity of culture and highlighted the importance of women, as a response to controversial comments made by Donald Trump.

Banksy is an anonymous Bristol-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director of unknown identity.Banksy uses stencils to create graffiti street art that has a dark humour, commenting on politics and social issues.

Banksy uses art to question society, to challenge the viewer to think…

During lockdown Banksy has been busy making art including a group of rats taking over his bathroom and a tribute to the NHS superheroes which was displayed at Southampton Hospital. More recently he has responded to the Black Lives Matters protests in Bristol where the controversial statue of Edward Colston, a slave trader, was torn down.

During the protests people could be seen holding homemade placards with slogans supporting their cause.

Many of those placards were placed around the empty base of Colston’s statue becoming a powerful living sculpture to replace the one that had been torn down. Those placards have now been removed and are going to form part of a display in a Bristol museum turning them into a permanent record of the protests; they will now be considered a work of art in their own right.

British contemporary artist Patrick Brill, better known by his pseudonym Bob and Roberta Smith, is also a writer, author, musician, and art education advocate. He is well known for his placards which are often used at protests, like the BLM marches in Bristol and elsewhere, to help raise awareness of key issues.

Bob and Roberta Smith paints slogans in brightly-colouredlettering on banners and discarded boards of wood and exhibits them in art galleries across the world. The slogans are usually humorous and focus on art, politics, popular culture, Britain and the world in general. They often support his activist campaigns.

During lockdown Smith has been sharing messages of hope and setting art challenges from his Instagram account, encouraging us to be creative and share our own messages of hope.

Your task: MAKE A STATEMENT!“How do you want the world to change after this?” • Design and make a placard responding to

this question from Smith.Find your materials: pencil, colours, felt tips, paint if you have it. A placard is often made using stuff people have at home; a piece of cardboard from that online shopping you just did or some left over house paint. Why not ask your parents what you could use. You could just as easily do this on a piece of paper or the back of an envelope (the inside of a cereal packet is quite nice to work on!)

STUCK FOR IDEAS? Here are some slogans you could use:

Knowledge is power

Be Kind

Don’t live your life through a mobile phone

Save the planet

There is no Planet B

Art changes lives

We are all the same beneath our differences

Make yourself heard

We can change the world

What can YOU do to help?

Black Live Matter

“How do you want the world to change after this?” Choose something to focus on:

Think about what is happening around the world right now: Covid 19, Black Lives Matters, massive reductions in pollution, no air travel, lockdown, isolation, NHS heroes clap and so much more besides. There is so much to draw inspiration from but maybe there is something closer to home that you’d like to shout about through art.

Look at the size of your board or paper; what will fit? Plan how you are going to use the space, it would be sensible to sketch out a mock up of what your finished work will look like first. Aim to fill lots of the space on your board.

I drew this slogan to display in my window in support of key workers. I planned out where the words would go using pencil first.

I didn’t have any paints to make a bright background but I was inspired to make patterns like Bob and Roberta Smith has on this work.

I played around with the colours I used to spell out the word ‘now’ in the main slogan. Green and Red are contrasting colours which means they make each other stand out.
