Welcome to Ash Class

Year 3/4

Miss K James

Mrs Richards will teach Ash class on a

Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Davies will support Ash class 4 mornings

and 2 afternoons a week.

This term PE will be on Thursday and Friday: •  It is a legal requirement and for health and safety

reasons children are not allowed to participate without the correct PE kit.

•  We encourage children to bring kit on a Monday and take home on a Friday. If your child does not have their kit you may get a text/phone call from the office regarding this.

Correct kit: •  Black shorts •  White or purple t-shirt •  Hair must be tied up

•  Earrings must be covered and watches removed

•  In Key Stage 2 children are no longer provided with a healthy snack, and therefore need to bring their own.

•  This should be a fruit or vegetable snack, cheese string, yoghurt or a healthy cereal bar if you feel that your child needs a carb snack.

•  There is also a healthy tuck shop where can children buy a snack at break time. This is available every day.

•  Children can have crisps and a small sweet snack (e.g. biscuits, cake) in their lunchbox but we ask them to eat these at lunchtime and not at break time.

•  Our healthy schools policy also states that children should have water in their water bottles. This does not contain sugars or

sweeteners like juice and squash do. It also does not stain children’s work if spilled in the classroom.

Reading: •  Please record reading in children’s reading records. Children should

read at least 3 times a week. They can also record their own reading in their reading record but please initial to show you have discussed the book with them.

•  If your child is a more confident reader and likes to read independently, it is still important to ask questions to develop their understanding. Question stems can be found on the school website to help with this.

•  We will try to check children’s reading records as regularly as possible and will record the frequency of their home reading.

•  Encourage children to read a wider range of texts. •  Book bands will be changed with regards to a child’s ability to

decode and also comprehend what they are reading. •  Every child will read with an adult in school each week as part of

either individual reading or guided reading groups.

Writing: •  We are continuing our Talk for Writing

approach. •  Opportunities for children to apply knowledge

and skills in cross-curricular writing projects. •  Spelling and grammar are taught daily and

often in the context of our writing themes. •  There is a focus on the writing process:

drafting, editing, checking, publishing. •  We follow Penpals handwriting scheme and in

KS2 children work towards earning a pen license.

Mathematics: •  Different aspects covered include: number, addition and

subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, measurement and statistics.

•  We will spend a few weeks on each aspect to give children opportunities to explore the skills in context and master through problem solving.

•  Number and calculation are the backbone of the curriculum and will be revised regularly across all areas of learning.

•  Mathematics games will support basic skills and develop confidence and fluency. Games are a good way to practise times tables, which are an important part of the maths curriculum.

•  A copy of the school’s calculation policy can be found on the school website. This explains the methods that we teach for solving calculations.

Topics: •  Term 1 – Under Attack! (History) •  Term 2 – Spirit of Christmas (Geography) •  Term 3 – From out of the Shadows (Science) •  Term 4 – Rocky the Findosaur (Science) •  Term 5 – When Micky Met Wallace (History) •  Term 6 – A Right Royal Battle (History)

A Window on the World (Geography) Trips: •  Term 3 – Visit a synagogue

•  Term 4 – Oxford University Museum of Natural History

The SIAP is the ‘School Improvement Action Plan’. This year we are focusing on: Reading – Ensure that there is a consistent approach to the teaching of reading throughout the school. Achievement – Ensure that there are good levels of attainment (% of children working at ARE and above) for all year groups across the school, in all subjects. Improve Leadership - Improve phase leadership to ensure that there is an equity of provision, particularly in cases where the same year group is represented in different classes. Science - Improve the provision of science throughout the school.

Everyone achieves – Accelerate the progress of disadvantaged children (particularly in EYFS and KS1) and the progress of SEND children (between KS1 and KS2).

Each week pupils: •  will be expected to read on at least 3 occasions; •  will be given a spelling, grammar or phonics activity; •  will be given a maths task that is linked to the learning going on in the

class that week. Answers to maths homework will be placed on the school’s website. Over a full term, pupils will also complete one piece of creative homework (from a choice of 3 options) that is linked to their class topic. This will be shared with the class at the end of the term. All weekly homework will be recorded in a homework book. Pupils’ work will always be acknowledged upon completion, on a weekly basis.

Homework goes home on a Friday and should be brought in on a Wednesday. The first homework will go home on 29th September and should be brought in on Wednesday 4th October.

Ash Class Representative: •  The forum is made up of one representative from each class. •  Members of the Parent/Carer forum meet with the head, deputy

and chair of governors, once a term on Thursday morning between 9am and 10am.

•  Parent/Carer forum representatives are elected annually. •  If you would like to be a volunteer, please contact the school

office. Parent/Carer Helpers •  Any help is very much appreciated: listening to readers, helping
