Summer 2017

Grateful ... and Still Grateful by: Pamela Pozderac Hager

Members of the Class of 2017 have now joined our ranks as ASH Alumnae sharing in the very unique tradition that is Alumnae Scholarship Housing. As active members of the ASH Society Board of Governors, we had the pleasure of meeting these young women four years ago, welcoming them into the ASH program, getting to know them, and watching them move through their time at Ohio State. We have witnessed the transformation as they have grown, and now move on to find their place in the world. It was obvious to all in attendance at the annual ASH Banquet this spring, from the heartwarming comments and emotional reflections shared by these ASH seniors, how grateful they are to be a part of this program. They are grateful for the many generous women who came before them and you who continue to support ASH. I am grateful for the ability to be a part of the group entrusted with using your gifts to support these women and enabling them to succeed. And I am still grateful for the opportunities ASH afforded me more than 40 years ago.

We can do so much more together than as individuals. With support from the Alumni Association, we have reached the level of a Scarlet Society and endeavor to build on that success. We appreciate your support from afar, but would like to see you up close and in person, too. Please mark your calendar, and make a plan to join us at an upcoming event sometime this year. (See dates on back page.) We have something for everyone ...• meet students and welcome those new to the ASH program • walk (or ride) in the Homecoming parade (or wave from the sidewalk)• tailgate & cheer for the Buckeyes (reserve your Huddle & Game tickets)• visit the houses and share a meal with the ASH girls (they will cook!)• join the Buckeye Book Community (biggest book club ever)• enjoy brunch with other Scholies (a new event, help us plan it)• network with students over pizza & ice cream (your advice is valuable)• celebrate at the ASH Banquet (Saturday evening to allow for travel)• volunteer (when & where TBD - suggest something)• or enjoy a summer evening of theatre in the park with friends.

Please consider taking up the challenge to serve with us. Utilize your talents and life experience on an ASHS committee (finance, communications, advancement, scholarship, programs) and share the ASH spirit. You’ll be glad you did.

Polly Ann (Roberts) Tewart of Worthington, a 1940’s ASH resident passed away in December 2016. Grateful for ASH, her family asked that memorial contributions be made to ASH and several gifts were made to ASH funds in her memory. Polly’s daughter, Sara Dale, also passed along to us a collection of photos of Polly enjoying her days in ASH.

Janet (Coate) Boyer of Greenville, a 1950’s resident of D-H passed away in November 2016.

Sally Jo Hopper, a dear friend of ASH as the OSUAA Senior Accountant responsible for providing the ASH Society BOG regular updates on the ASH endowment funds, passed away in April 2017.

ASH Alumnae were among the more than 1,200 Buckeye volunteers who participated in 80 service projects in 18 states during the third annual Buckeyes Give: Month of Service in April. We baked cookies, fudge, muffins, and candy buckeyes for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus.

OSU supported volunteers who made a huge impact in their local communities by organizing projects that benefited food banks, veterans, the environment, health, animals, seniors, education, and crisis support. The Office of Volunteer Relations, as well as alumni clubs and societies, colleges and individuals organized the projects. When Buckeyes come together for a cause, we really make an impact.

If you can’t join us in Columbus, find the Buckeyes in your area and join them!!!

The ASH Society awarded $70,097 in scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year to women living in Alumnae Scholarship Housing. Awards ranged from $500 to $5960.

All women living in the program are encouraged to apply for a full-housing scholarship. Eight women received full-housing scholarships and 2 women received half-housing scholarships following the application process. Additionally, 11 ASH women were awarded scholarships based on financial need (FAFSA). Finally, one scholarship was awarded to a former ASH resident now attending Ohio State graduate/professional school.

The value of living in an ASH house provides approximately a $6,000 savings over living in a traditional dorm.

After a brief reception, photos of current ASH students, and a welcome by Society President, Pamela Hager, the Annual Meeting of the Alumnae Scholarship Housing Society was held at the ASH Banquet on March 26, 2017 at the Longaberger Alumni House. The brief meeting included reports from the Society Secretary and Treasurer, and Scholarship and Advancement committees. A report on the 2016-17 ASH Programs and Events was also included. Alumnae and current ASH residents and guests shared a delicious meal, followed by a key-note presentation entitled “Daring Greatly” by ASH alumna, Dr. Janet Bay. The evening concluded after naming the 2017 “Woman of the Year” from each house, and introducing the graduating seniors.

Students’ comments included “I loved the speaker ...”, “... the banquet was really great - good food, really awesome keynote speaker ...”, and “really enjoyed the slide show (of ASH through the years) ... We loved being able to see the women who have been through this program, and seeing where they are now in life.” Dr. Bay reported she “very much enjoyed the evening. Seeing old friends, hearing the accomplishments of some of the current students and sharing some of my story was rewarding.”

Megan Patterson received her degree in Environmental Engineering and will be working with an engineering consulting firm.

Mary Grace Thibault will be an intern at the Midwestern Regional Climate Center in Illinois this summer and will begin a masters degree in Atmospheric Science at Ohio State in the fall.

Shannon Butler will begin the management trainee program at Kroger while preparing for the Columbus Police Department examination late this summer.

Emilie Giardini, with her degree in Agribusiness, plans to work at a farm-to-table restaurant, similar to that which she hopes to own, and attend culinary school.

Ana Medina-Fetterman majored in Psychology and Italian and minored in Spanish and plans to intern in Washington, D.C. this summer.

Stacey Nash will pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

Brenna Simmons will continue her education with a MS degree in Microbiology and Cell Science at the University of Florida while continuing to work in a veterinary clinical setting. She hopes to attend the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Victoria Stanisauskis plans to attend the Fredric G. Levin College of Law at Florida State University.

Jillian Ellis with her degrees in political science and logistics will “continue to be a trailblazer” as she enters the working world.

Eugenia Stanisauskis will conduct research at the Florida State University High Performance Materials Institute this summer. After her final semester at OSU she will purse a graduate degree in Chemical Engineering.

Gifts to our ASH designated funds totaled more than $60,300 in the 2016 calendar year! Forty-eight of our donors reached one of our highlighted donor levels and are listed below. THANK YOU to all of our wonderful donors! Your gifts are an investment in our students and are crucial for meeting the current needs of the Alumnae Scholarship Housing program. We could not continue to provide full and partial housing scholarships, and ASH residents could not accomplish what they do today without your continued and generous support.
