DATES TO REMEMBER

E ducation Week 2019 Last week, parents had the opportunity to view classroom and corridor displays and to participate

in exploring this year’s Education Week theme of Cele-brating Careers during our Open Evening on Wednes-day 22nd May 6:00—7:00 p.m. A number of families took the opportunity to attend with over two hundred and forty “passports” collected as children and parents filed through the school’s entry foy-er. With four stamps collected in the “passports”, indi-cating at least four classrooms had been visited, our at-tendees subsequently gained entry into the Education Week Open Night “lucky draw”! F undraising Would you like to meet new parents whilst fundraising for

our wonderful school? Our fundrais-ing team is in need of extra helpers. Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. The fundraising team meet once each month and have a casual catch up to discuss fund-raising ideas for our school.

New faces and ideas would be a welcome addition to our team. Please contact Belinda on 0407 234 355 if you are interested.

S chool Assemblies As you are aware, school assemblies are held in our gymnasium each Friday at 2:30 p.m. They

provide us with the opportunity to address the children collectively and to give recognition to student achieve-ment through the presentation of student awards such as Stars of the Week.

Assemblies also pro-vide the opportunity for students to perform. Last week, the Year Preps sang the song “Baby Shark”, with accompanying actions, to the delight of all assembled!

V COP at Assembly As parents are no doubt aware, VCOP and Big Write is a teaching approach based on research

which focuses on four main aspects of the writing process (V: vocabulary C: connectives O: openers P: punctuation) and provides children with the skills to improve their own writing through self-assessment. VCOP sessions are based on one or more of the VCOP elements and provide students with lots of fun and engagement. Last week, our VCOP competition challenge focussed on PUNCTUATION with children having to submit a sentence containing an assortment of correctly applied punctuation! Judy Anderson, English coordinator, read out the sentences and announced the winners at last week’s assembly!

I went to the park (my sister came too) on a bright, sunny day! Jett 1MK

One frightening night, I heard a very strange sound. “Who’s there?” I said. Felix 1MK

CRASH went the giant (who was actually nice)! Some of the villagers screamed “Ahhhhhhh!” but the giant whimpered, “I just need some food.” Madely 3 DK

CRASH! BANG! WHOOSH! It was an awful night, it had: lightning, rain, thunder and blowing wind! Jamie 3 MF

Last week, all the classes also participated in a COLD WRITE. A Cold Write is where students are not given the opportunity to talk about the topic before writing and the learning aides are removed. This is an opportunity for students to display what they know without the assistance from external resources. The whole school Year Prep - Year 6 had the same narrative topic with the aide of a given stimulus - Through the Door - which hopefully

captured the students’ imaginations and took them on a voluminous amount of imaginary adventures!! During VCOP lessons, children also participate in a BIG WRITE. Big Write is a celebration of students’ learning. The biggest difference between Big Write and the ‘everyday’ writing session is the environment. The classroom has a different atmosphere. The lights are turned off, candles are burning (every student has a LED candles) and quiet music is playing. Students are not allowed to talk to each other and the teacher takes this time to conference with individual students and to look at their individual writing goals. Jim Bell, Principal

B ook Fair 2019 Last week, our Multi Media Centre was transformed to complement our Catch the Reading

Wave - Beach Book Fair theme which assisted students to “net” some great books!! This year’s Book Fair, again, helped develop imagination and good reading habits by facilitating the children's opportunity to catch an awesome wave of quality children’s literature!!!

In addition to each grade visiting the BOOK FAIR, highlights would have included the junior school dress-up parade and the competition where children had to match the “morphed” faces and the heads of staff members. The winning entries will be announced at this week’s assembly! Thank you to the families who supported their child’s love of reading and our school through this fundraiser!!

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE.

Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them off

their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are required to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm bookings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the De-partment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
