LEADERSNEWS What a fun day for all at Sports Day last Friday. I was impressed with the collegiate support students showed towards each other, and the respect, care and compassion for everyone. The students certainly did their best, and well done to the Year 7s for winning the Year 7vs parents & staff race. A remarkable effort considering the age of the adults seems to get younger each year! A special thanks to Sue Boggiano for the work involved making the day run as smoothly as it does. We are looking at ways of changing the format of Sports Day as we grow as a school, and welcome suggestions from families. Congratulations to the Kangaroos for First place, and thanks to Glenys deWit for her donation and presentation of our new shield. We appreciate the hard work and donations of the volunteers helping Jodie in the Canteen; we made $1500 profit on the day, which will go towards a feature in our new Nature Playground. School Council met this week and Steph Hensgen reported on our trip to Canberra to put forward our case for facilities to support our growing school. By 2019 we will have almost 500 students enrolled. Kim Freeman and Steph met Simon Birmingham and Nicolle Flint this week at a morning tea for Boothby families, and Nicolle and Carolyn Habib, local member for Elder, visited Thursday to learn more about EPS. Our student leaders Lila, Poppy and Luke showed them around the school with school council chair, Michael Rodenburg and fellow member Caz Boyd. Parent/ student/ teacher interviews have kept teachers busy before and after school in the past few weeks, and I commend the staff for their dedication and interest in every student in their class. If you haven’t had an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and hear more about their school life, please contact the teacher via email direct. Written reports will be sent home at the end of Term 2. A reminder that the first day of Term 2 is a student free day. As a staff we have developed a School Improvement Plan with a focus on Literacy, Numeracy and Inquiry learning. We are spending the day moderating our Writing processes across R-7, and looking closely at the strategies we use to teach Reading skills, particularly once students become independent readers. In the afternoon we are restructuring our Inquiry scope and sequence to become more student focussed on concepts rather than topic based. I’m sure you will hear and see evidence of our learning as the year progresses. I hope you get to spend family time together in the holidays. We have included an update on happenings around the school to read at your leisure. LEADERS’ NEWS What a fun day for all at Sports Day last Friday. I was impressed with the collegiate support students showed towards each other, and the respect, care and compassion for

everyone. The students certainly did their best, and well done to the Year 7s for winning the Year 7v’s parents &

staff race.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and hear more about their school life, please contact the teacher via email direct. Term 1 Report from Staff Reception

Our 70 new Receptions have settled in to school life well, and have enjoyed

investigating outside in the mornings. They have been exploring various areas such

as: construction, nature, art, gross motor, dramatic play and writing. We have

incorporated the 5 senses and learning intentions into this play based learning.

1/2 Some highlights for the Year 1/2 classes this term have been:

All classes are up and running with the Seesaw app. Each

class is at different stages in terms of learning the benefits of

this app and we look forward to more student sharing of their

learning journey in term 2, especially during Walker

Learning/Play-based Investigations time.

1/2 teachers have been planning together for our next

Inquiry unit.

Students will interview and older family member as we look

at this topic from a historical perspective. An excursion to

Adelaide Oval and other significant places in the city is being planned for term 2. We are

also planning our Walker/Play Based Investigations around this unit commencing for all

1/2 classes in term 2.

Rooms 7 & 8 and 10 & 11 are finalising preparations for our “Zoo Snooze” with the year 2’s.

This will be Thursday/Friday of weeks 1 & 2 next term.

3/4 This term our PLT has

implemented Seesaw which

has been a great way to

communicate with our

families. We are able to load

videos of Maths strategies so

we can engage in ‘flipped’

learning as well as show

parents what we are learning about in class. We have

received lots of positive feedback from families, students,

and staff.

We have also begun working collaboratively on STEM

projects. We are able to get the 4 classes together to work

on projects which mean that children can work with students in other classes and we

can pool resources and our teaching team can also work collaboratively.

This term we did a STEM project on kites and next term we will look at boats (which links

to our unit of work on the First Fleet)

4/5/6

Our students [room 16, 1, 2] have been taking part in Rotations covering

Health, Geography and Design Technology.

The students in the three classes will be sharing what they have completed

and their highlights, with each

other this week.

The students are enjoying having

different teachers for these

sessions. This is also helping them

to self-managing and organise

themselves; preparing them for the upper grades.

Page 3: LEADERS NEWS DATES TO REMEMBER - edwardps.sa.edu.au

6/7 This term the students in Year 6/7 have been involved in a number of excursions and incursions.

This included participating in Aquatics at Port Noarlunga, a camp to Glenhaven Park,

and incursions from the RAA and SAPOL teaching the students about road safety.

The students have been participating in rotations across particular curriculum areas (Art, HASS,

Science, Health, Media and Technology) to better prepare them for high school. Each week the

students have also participated in Action Teams, where the students make positive contributions

to the school and/or local community. We have added 2 new action groups this year which

include sewing and craft, and cooking.

Science

In Specialist Science lessons our focus this term has been in

Biological Sciences. The Receptions have concentrated on the

basic needs of living things.

The Yr 1&2's have focused on creature features in different places

and have closely looked at the purpose of different features for

different animals.

Yr 3's have explored the link between living, non, living, once

living and products of living things. Students acted as both

botanists and biologists to categorize and classify these things.

Arts

This week concludes our focus on Music.

Through research I’ve decided to focus much more on

reading and composing rhythm because that’s the most

difficult aspect to grasp. Receptions have had a ball with the

instruments and beat and dance while the yr 7s complete

their jingles for our new student fortnightly publication of Eds

on FILM.

Next term our focus is Drama.

YEAR 6/7 AQUATICS AND CAMP

In week 6 of term 1 2018, the students from rooms 13, 14 and 15 went to Glenhaven Adventure Park. We had lots to do there over the 3 days we were there. On the first day, we got introduced to all the staff and people that worked at the camp. We also got started on our group activities. We had many activities such as initiatives, raft building, high ropes, giant swing, leap of faith, archery and a hike. Each activity was very different to the others. The activities helped us use our different skills such as teamwork, resilience, persistence, and self-management. We also used our learner powers. While having fun, we had to overcome many obstacles. The camp had really great food and dorms. We enjoyed the hospitality. In week 11 of term 1 2018, the Year 6 & 7 students from rooms 13, 14, 15 and 16 participated in Aquatics at Port Noarlunga. We had lots of fun. There were many different activities that you could do such as snorkelling, wave skiing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and many more. We caught a bus to Port Noarlunga and went to our assigned activities. We had to learn the tactics/tips to be able to do that activity well. We really enjoyed all the equipment and instructions that the instructors supplied us with. We learnt how to do different water based activities and it was really fun! We also had to use our learner powers to be able to listen and do the activity correctly and safely.

What a great term of after-hours school sports we have had. Thank you to all parents/carer that willingly gave up their time to support the children and take on a coaching/team managing role. So, if you are a year 5, 6 or 7 student wishing to play netball, please contact the office ASAP. Soccer nomination are still open but be quick as they will close early Term 2.

Last Friday our Volleyballers, played their final game under the guidance and support of Karola and Dom Laventure. Karola and Dom have been organising EPS Volleyball for over 7 years and made the decision last year that Term 1, 2018 would be their last. I personally, and on behalf of all the volleyballers (past and present) extend a huge THANK YOU to the Laventure Family for all that they have done for

EPS Volleyball during this time. I’m sure the children would agree that their support and guidance has been instrumental in many players going onto club and Academy level. We are planning to publicly acknowledge Karola and Dom’s effort in an assembly in Term 2.
