Welcome to Camp J2

We hope you have a pleasant stay in our cabin, and enjoy your time in the Maine woods. Please leave your name and comments in our guest book.

Useful information about the cabin before you arrive

The cabin sleeps 7 comfortably in 3 bedrooms – a kids room with bunk beds, master bedroom with a queen size bed and a family bedroom with a double and a single bed. Our cabin has what you need to be comfortable in the middle of a pine forest. There is one full bathroom and one toilet, a kitchen, an open living space with a fireplace and a screened in porch overlooking the lake. We have a fire pit outside, as well as a gas grill for BBQs. Please only use both responsibly, and at your own risk.

We provide all linens, cutlery & basic cooking utensils.

There is a washer & dryer for laundry, and a clothesline outside.

There is broadband and local telephone.

There are two kayaks you can use at your own risk and 2 adult size life jackets. Life jackets are required to be worn on the water at all times for people under 16 in Maine, and must be present in the boat for all persons over 16, so please make sure you bring appropriate size jackets for everyone in your group.

There is a dock where you could tie up a motor boat if you wanted to rent one from the local marina. The dock has a swim ladder and there is a small shallow sandy area for wading. There is swim platform off the end of the dock as well, good for sunbathing as well as swimming.

While you are here

As a courtesy for us an the other guests – if you use something up, replace it. This goes for everything - gas for the grill, wood for the fire, spices, condiments, toilet paper, tea lights etc.

There are two small convenience stores – Rosie's on Main Street and the Center Lovell Store on Rt. 5. For full size grocery stores, there are stores in Bridgton, Norway and North Conway. Firewood may be purchased at numerous roadside stands.

When buying toilet paper for the camp, make sure it says it is septic friendly. We usually

use Scott 1000, but any brand is fine as long as it is septic safe.

If you would like to help us recycle, there are green clink bags under the sink. Fill these with your empty plastic & glass bottles, or cans. There are bar code stickers on the board by the phone. Put one sticker onto the bag and drop it off at Hannafords grocery store in either Bridgton or Norway.

The best reception for your mobile is on the dock or on the porch.

Wildlife

There are three Lady Slippers between the trees by the grill / firepit area and the shore. These are an endangered species and must not be picked or damaged (it is a criminal offense in Maine).

There are lots of birds and other wildlife to watch, including the endangered Common Loon, who we see fishing almost every day. There are deer in the woods and we've seen moose tracks, although not the moose itself yet this year.

We have a hummingbird feeder, and if you would like to feed them, put 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar into a saucepan. Bring it slowly to a boil, stirring occasionally. Once all the sugar is fully dissolved, turn it off and let it cool. The hummingbird feeder is the red & clear feeder hanging from the hook in the tree directly in front of the right hand corner of the porch (left of the fire pit).

The neighbors have a boxer named Molly. She's friendly and very good with kids, but if you would prefer she didn't come visit while you are there, just let the Johnson's know.

Activities

For things to do, there are the obvious lake activities such as swimming, fishing & kayaking. The lake is 9 miles long, so exploring it by kayak takes some time!

Above the camp is our “Blongo Ball” court (also known as “Hillbilly Golf” or “Ladder Golf”). You can find the rules here: http://www.ehow.com/facts_4811590_hillbilly-golf-official-rules.html

There are hiking trails nearby, including a great one for smaller kids just on the other side of the lake (Mt Sabattus). If you fancy a more difficult climb, Mt. Washington (the highest mountain on the east coast) is about an hour's drive. Mt. Washington also has a road and a railway to the top if you'd like to see the view without the hike. The railway is an old fashioned steam cog railway, which is fun to ride for the kids and offers stunning views of the foliage in the fall. You can drive your own car up the road, or take one of their shuttle vans, which have been modified to have an extra low gear and extra cooling for the brakes for the

trip down. The shuttle drivers are often good sources of information for inquisitive young minds! We are also near to several trailheads for the Appalachian Trail, which offers day hikes and longer for all abilities.

You are welcome to use the fishing rods that are in the rack on the porch. You'll need your own bait & tackle. The fish here seem to be happy with worms, and the best time to fish is about an hour after sunset. Worms are available at both Rosie's and the Center Lovell Market; tackle can be purchased at Wal-Mart. You will need a license to fish in Maine, available from the Town Office, just up the road from the Center Lovell Market.

Aside from the outdoor activities, there is an outlet shopping centre in North Conway (near Mt. Washington), Conway also has an aqua park (Attatash), a theme park aimed at kids under 10 called Storyland, as well as mini golf and other activities.

There are brochures for other local attractions in the chest of drawers by the guest book.

In case the weather isn't co-operating, there is a selection of games & puzzles to enjoy in the kids bedroom.
