Welcome To Careers This power point has been designed to help you set up your Portfolio which is worth 10 marks towards your final grade. You will require: a 1 ½-2 inch binder and plastic protective sleeves (approx. 75) and one USB memory stick During the fall term of grade 12 you might find this binder to be very useful when applying to College and/or University. For the next two and a half years you can continue to place important documents related to your academic career path. Being a Holy Cross Crusader and a life long learner, celebrating your accomplishment and proving you have the skills required for success allows you to feel proud of what yourself. • Monday February 2, 2015 Careers: GLC205 Periods: 1, 3 & 4 • • Welcome to Careers! My name is Ms. Bland and I will be your teacher/facilitator over the next nine weeks, while you

explore a variety of activities related to the work world, you and your academic path.• I can be reached in room 213 ext.: 4001. My school email is [email protected]• • Teacher Pages: F. Bland is where you will find daily lessons, handouts, communication regarding assignments. Watch your

deadlines to submissions. See code of conduct on late assignments. • Text Book: Daily, you will require your textbook called Careers 10 by Nelson.• Portfolio Binder: You will require a 1 1/2 to 2 inch binder for Careers this will be your portfolio for the course with 75

protector pages. • A memory stick /USB stick to store your documentation related to your careers course. • Home to School Communication: There are a number of assignments in the Careers Course that family collaboration is

encouraged and a signature confirming that this collaboration occurred. • A course outline, a schedule of the Careers course projects and assignments is provided, to be recorded in your school

issued agenda. • Tracking Sheet: There is a tracking sheet attached for students to record their own progress. It is suggested that this is

shared regularly with home. • Student School Issued Agenda: The agenda is a project and you will use this agenda daily to record in pencil all of your

daily assignments, tests, homework related to your four classes. You will also record before and after school commitments in your agenda. This assignment is worth 10 marks towards your final mark. If you have misplaced your agenda, please see the front office to purchase your agenda. You will need your agenda every day. You will not be allowed to go to your locker to retrieve this agenda, it’s a working project which means you should be taking it to all your classes.

• All assignments are to be completed on the computer, edited and printed in hard/good copy prior to the scheduled time for submission.

• If a student misses any of the booked lab classes, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for the use of a computer on their own time.

• • There is a computer lab in the library and it opens daily before and after school. Please see the librarian on duty if you need

the library after school. Alternate computer lab rooms are 215, 217 with the teacher’s permission and there is free printing in these locations. Printing during class is free when we are scheduled for our lab classes. However, final projects and/or assignments and independent published works are to be printed at the students expense (10 cents a page) prior to coming to class for submission and being allowed to leave to go and print on a day of submission is prohibited with other classes booking the library on alternate days that we are not in the library. Please watch your deadlines for submission.

• There is a set of student project samples displayed in the classroom for the careers program. • There isn’t an exam in Careers, but there are two culminating activities worth 30marks:• * A Summative Evaluation Part A – My Portfolio - 10marks• * A Summative Evaluation Part B – An Academic Career Path - 20marks• • IEP’s - students who have an IEP should meet with me to discuss their IEP to be sure that extra time for assignments and

tests is arranged when needed. Room 213 is equipped for computer hook up, and it is important that if you have a lap top that the required course materials are loaded onto your computer in the first week. You will need to see the special education staff to make this accommodation in Room 117.

• Academic support is available if a student requires support. I am usually available during lunch time, but this must be arranged mutually.

• • A draft schedule for Careers is provided to assist you in your time management and organizational skills. Changes made will

be on the board in the classroom. Networking with your teachers, me and/or your peers is very important if you are absent from any of your classes.

• Instructions: • Using the titles in the Portfolio Table of Contents

you will cut and paste the titles into a word document, this will help you transfer each title when creating your page. Once you have done this you are to create individual pages for each. You are to put the title with pictures that relate to you.

• These individual pages will act as your dividers for the portfolio. The two areas that will incorporate sub parts within their sections are Myblueprint and Work History. Colour coding to show you which parts are to be put together . The rest have their own page.

• You have been provided a copy of this page to help you organize your materials.

Assignment Submission• Instructions: • All written work will be completed using the computer to edit in good

copy before submission. Create title pages using words and photos with the provided titles to each component and place these title pages into your (binder) called My Portfolio.

• There should be a cover page on the outside of your binder -should have the same information being shared when the Portfolio is opened. Place a photo of yourself being active in life with the required information. A sample has been provide.

• As you complete each component to the portfolio you are to file your completed work with it’s corresponding title page.

• Organization, neatness, detail, and creativity is important as part of your mark for the portfolio.

• Teacher Page s– Calendar: Information related to each assignment will be posted to help you stay organized. This is under my name: F. Bland

• Teacher Pages Handouts: you will find what you require in the handout section . If you loose the hard copy of what you are provided in class, it will be your responsibility to copy your second copy and you can find the class material in the handout section on the teacher page.

• Deadlines: Remember to submit all your work on time. We will have many computer labs to complete the work during class. At the end of class you will submit your finished work for evaluation.

• Late Assignments due to illness or unforeseen events remember to conference with me.

• Sports: games will have you absent for scheduled games that you are required to play, you will always have plenty of warning to know when your required assignments are due, it is your responsibility to stay on top of your studies meeting deadlines for submission even though you have extra curricular activities.

text book called Careers 10 by Nelson. You will need to bring this textbook to class daily while we complete this booklet.

• My Profile Project -this project is designed to have you reflect on the skills you have developed the past 15 years of your life so far.

• There are a series of activities that you will require your text book to complete tasks, give feedback, identify strengths and weakness and next steps to developing these skills.

• You will be provided with a handout explaining what you need to do for the assignment and a marking rubrics. This assignment is to be completed in edited form using the computer. There are scheduled lab classes provided for you and you will be required to pay for any copies you need for this project.

• The assignment will be evaluated during class on the due date: Feb. 26th, 2015.

• You will require your Holy Cross Catholic School issued Agenda, or purchase a 2015 Agenda from your choice of store. . This Agenda will be used daily in class.

• The other option is to create one that starts Feb. 1st to the end of April.

• It is evaluated once a week, and we use it do develop your skills recording, day to day homework in all four of your classes, extra curricular activities, appointments, assignments, test etc.

• Your school agenda outlines all the great events

that happens at Holy Cross and has useful tips to stay on top of your studies.

• There is a month at a glance and the weekly planner in the issued agenda you will be using both types for recording.
